Todo esto, enfocado a incrementar la durabilidad y confiabilidad de los anteriores. Dentro de estas filosofías ó sistemas de mantenimiento, los denominados Mantenimiento correctivo, Mantenimiento preventivo y Mantenimiento predictivo, juegan el rol principal en la mayoría de empresas y plantas que planean y ejecutan su mantenimiento. En el campo automotor y en la gama de equipos móviles en general, ya sean de transporte de personas, transporte de carga, maquinaria pesada, etc., es común encontrar que se ha relegado el mantenimiento a la corrección de fallas y varadas en el instante que aparecen. De igual forma, la literatura correspondiente a la aplicación de las filosofías de mantenimiento a flotas vehiculares y de equipos móviles, es escasa y no agrupa los conceptos teóricos y prácticos que deben ser tenidos en cuenta. Los equipos móviles, cualquiera sea su clase, no pueden ser ajenos a la atención por parte de un Departamento de Mantenimiento, y requieren tanta atención como cualquier maquina presente en una planta industrial. Por esta razón, el siguiente trabajo de investigación, recopila conceptos, datos estadísticos y formatos de registro y reportes de información, relacionados en especial, con los vehículos diesel de transporte de carga, usados como ejemplo de aplicación. Esta información proveniente en su mayoría de la literatura existente en Internet y empresas como el Ingenio Riopaila S. A. y Coordinadora Mercantil S.A., es relacionada en el presente trabajo, de tal forma que muestra la ventaja y necesidad de disponer y aplicar políticas de administración de procesos de mantenimento bien estructurada.
