Book excerpt: Excerpt from Yellow Dwarf: A Problem Disease of Small Grains A virus-caused yellow dwarf type of disease that attacks small grain and other grass plants has been rolling up evidence that it is a costly cr0p destroyer, and a hard one to fight. In United States farming areas, the virus-spread by aphids-has been outstandingly destructive to oats, secondarily to barley. Wheat, rye, and many pasture and range grasses can be infected. Only in recent years has research been able to make solid progress toward understanding and combating this yellow dwarf disease. For oat growers and many other farmers, some of the new-found information is important for knowing what the disease is like and what protective measures are available or in prospect. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of Cereal and Forage Crops in the United States in 1928 As usual, the most prevalent species of Tilletia was T. Laevis. Collaborators in Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, Illinois, Morth Dakota, Kansas, and Colorado all reported this species and stated that T. Tritici was not observed. In Montana, P. A. Young found that the smooth-spored species, 2. Laevis, was by far the more common. Out of specimens from.56 fields of winter Wheat that he examined microscopically, only three showed T. Tritici. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of Cereal and Forage Crops in the United States in 1923 Nineteen hundred and twenty-three was not an unusual year for cereal diseases in general. Some diseases were more, and some were less prevalent than usual and naturally they varied greatly in severity in different parts of the country. Since stem rust is one of the most important cereal diseases and because of the recent efforts to control it through eradication of the barberry, the outbreak of this disease in parts of the Spring wheat area was especially noteworthy. The disease was more serious than it has been for the past two years, but the epidemic was not nearly so severe as those of 1916 and other years prior to the barberry eradication efforts. Another noticeable feature of the cereal disease situation was the comparatively light attack of the leaf rusts of wheat and rye. During 1921 and 1922 these diseases were quite destructive, but in 1923 they were notice able for their absence in many cases. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Corn Diseases in Illinois: Their Extent, Nature, and Control The information presented here concerns dent corn principally, tho in general the same diseases occur on all the different kinds of maize, or Indian corn (zea mays), namely, sweet, pop, flint, and flour corn, sweet corn usually being the most susceptible. Effort has been made to present the discussions in simple lan guage. Nevertheless, for the sake of accuracy and brevity, certain technical terms have to be used. The meanings of such words are explained in the glossary at the end of the publication. Each topic has been organized as a more or less independent unit. While this arrangement has necessitated some slight repetition between sections, the advantage to the reader is obvious. Facts concerning the be havior of corn diseases on the germinator are concentrated in the last part of the bulletin. The authors have drawn freely upon material published by other investigators as well as upon their own experiences and observa tions. Literature references are given for some of the most impor tant of these contributions, especially to the relatively recent ones. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Barley Yellow Dwarf: A Virus Disease of Cereals and Grasses Barley yellow dwarf has been recognized as a virus disease of cereals and grasses only since 1951, when it was discovered by Oswald and Houston (164) in California. Nevertheless, even in this short time it has become accepted as a disease of major importance i-n many areas of the United States, and in other countries as well. In 1959, for example, barley yellow dwarf virus incited the most serious single disease of oats in the United States and caused production losses in the central oat belt comparable with those recorded for various epidemics of other major diseases of that crop (156, Moreover, inherent in the economic implications of barley yellow dwarf is the long-range potential of a disease that is caused by a' versatile virus of wide host range. Even in its infancy, therefore, barley yellow dwarf seems destined to assume classic status among cereal diseases and thus to become increasingly important in teaching and research. Hence, there is compelling need for monographic treatment of this disease at this time, to provide both a teaching aid and a standard refer ence for the rapidly increasing diverse research activity. Throughout the manuscript, the author uses the terms cereals and small grains. These words are meant to refer only to barley, oats, wheat, and rye in this treatise. Also, considerable detail of aphid-life cycles is included in the belief that, as the only means of spread of the barley yellow dwarf virus, any factor affecting the aphid is important to the disease. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of Cereal and Forage Crops in the United States in 1924 This report has been made as concise as possible. It is realized that in some cases more extended discussions and conclusions might have been desirable, but the limitations of space and time made this impossible. There were no important epidemics of cereal or forage crop diseases in the United States in 1924. The cereal rusts Were conspicuous by their absence. While wheat bunt was not a very important factor in all the wheat growing states, it was serious in a few states such as Kansas, Washington, and Idaho. Apparently the flag smut situation has not in creased in seriousness in the United States the past year. This holds also for take all and the nematode disease of wheat. The importance of corn diseases which are collectively causing a large annual loss in the corn belt is being recognized more fully each year. Several new alfalfa diseases which are not fully understood are appearing in several states. Undoubtedly it will be found that several robt diseases are responsible for some of the reduced acreage in alfalfa growing states.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters on the Diseases of Plants When the reader has examined the foregoing list, he will very likely wonder at its length, and no doubt ask, IS it possible that there are so many distinct varieties of wheat? To which the ready answer is, Yes, it is true; there are more than three hundred varieties of wheat. I do not mean to imply that every name in the foregoing list represents a distinct variety, for it is beyond question that a number of these so-called varieties, especially in the Purple Straw, Lammas, Fife, and Defiance groups, are identical. These are kept in our plots only out of deference to well-known popular names. One moment more and we will return to the subject of naming wheats. I only wish, first, to explain the nature of the nomenclature plots, which have now become such an established institution. Rows of wheat, each row containing only a single sort, are sown side by Side in the order given in the above list. Each row is plainly labelled, and all the wheats of a kind (that is, closely related to each other) are gathered together into a plot, as shown in the illustration Fig. 2, p. 7, and the plot is labelled by means of a large Sign bearing the name of the group or family. These wheats are the result of six years of careful study and selection. They have been chosen from over samples obtained from all parts of the world - Australia, New Zealand, United States, Great Britain, Russia, India, Japan, China, South Africa, Italy, Spain, France, Germany, Hungary, Turkey, Algiers, Mexico, Chili, and Canada. The whole world has been drawn upon for these samples. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
