Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classic "Limit Dislribntions fOT slt1ns of Independent Ramdorn Vari ables" by B.V. Gnedenko and A.N. Kolmogorov was published in 1949. Since then the theory of summation of independent variables has devel oped rapidly. Today a summing-up of the studies in this area, and their results, would require many volumes. The monograph by I.A. Ibragi mov and Yu. V. I~innik, "Independent and Stationarily Connected VaTiables", which appeared in 1965, contains an exposition of the contem porary state of the theory of the summation of independent identically distributed random variables. The present book borders on that of Ibragimov and Linnik, sharing only a few common areas. Its main focus is on sums of independent but not necessarily identically distri buted random variables. It nevertheless includes a number of the most recent results relating to sums of independent and identically distributed variables. Together with limit theorems, it presents many probahilistic inequalities for sums of an arbitrary number of independent variables. The last two chapters deal with the laws of large numbers and the law of the iterated logarithm. These questions were not treated in Ibragimov and Linnik; Gnedenko and KolmogoTOv deals only with theorems on the weak law of large numbers. Thus this book may be taken as complementary to the book by Ibragimov and Linnik. I do not, however, assume that the reader is familiar with the latter, nor with the monograph by Gnedenko and Kolmogorov, which has long since become a bibliographical rarity

Book excerpt: This is an introductory book on discrete statistical distributions and its applications. It discusses only those that are widely used in the applications of probability and statistics in everyday life. The purpose is to give a self-contained introduction to classical discrete distributions in statistics. Instead of compiling the important formulas (which are available in many other textbooks), we focus on important applications of each distribution in various applied fields like bioinformatics, genomics, ecology, electronics, epidemiology, management, reliability, etc., making this book an indispensable resource for researchers and practitioners in several scientific fields. Examples are drawn from different fields. An up-to-date reference appears at the end of the book. Chapter 1 introduces the basic concepts on random variables, and gives a simple method to find the mean deviation (MD) of discrete distributions. The Bernoulli and binomial distributions are discussed in detail in Chapter 2. A short chapter on discrete uniform distribution appears next. The next two chapters are on geometric and negative binomial distributions. Chapter 6 discusses the Poisson distribution in-depth, including applications in various fields. Chapter 7 is on hypergeometric distribution. As most textbooks in the market either do not discuss, or contain only brief description of the negative hypergeometric distribution, we have included an entire chapter on it. A short chapter on logarithmic series distribution follows it, in which a theorem to find the kth moment of logarithmic distribution using (k-1)th moment of zero-truncated geometric distribution is presented. The last chapter is on multinomial distribution and its applications. The primary users of this book are professionals and practitioners in various fields of engineering and the applied sciences. It will also be of use to graduate students in statistics, research scholars in science disciplines, and teachers of statistics, biostatistics, biotechnology, education, and psychology.

Book excerpt: This lively introductory text exposes the student in the humanities to the world of discrete mathematics. A problem-solving based approach grounded in the ideas of George PĆ³lya are at the heart of this book. Students learn to handle and solve new problems on their own. A straightforward, clear writing style and well-crafted examples with diagrams invite the students to develop into precise and critical thinkers. Particular attention has been given to the material that some students find challenging, such as proofs. This book illustrates how to spot invalid arguments, to enumerate possibilities, and to construct probabilities. It also presents case studies to students about the possible detrimental effects of ignoring these basic principles. The book is invaluable for a discrete and finite mathematics course at the freshman undergraduate level or for self-study since there are full solutions to the exercises in an appendix.'Written with clarity, humor and relevant real-world examples, Basic Discrete Mathematics is a wonderful introduction to discrete mathematical reasoning.'- Arthur Benjamin, Professor of Mathematics at Harvey Mudd College, and author of The Magic of Math

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This tract develops the purely mathematical side of the theory of probability, without reference to any applications. When originally published, it was one of the earliest works in the field built on the axiomatic foundations introduced by A. Kolmogoroff in his book Grundbegriffe der Wahrscheinlichkeitsrechnung, thus treating the subject as a branch of the theory of completely additive set functions. The author restricts himself to a consideration of probability distributions in spaces of a finite number of dimensions, and to problems connected with the Central Limit Theorem and some of its generalizations and modifications. In this edition the chapter on Liapounoff's theorem has been partly rewritten, and now includes a proof of the important inequality due to Berry and Esseen. The terminology has been modernized, and several minor changes have been made.

Book excerpt: This handbook, now available in paperback, brings together a comprehensive collection of mathematical material in one location. It also offers a variety of new results interpreted in a form that is particularly useful to engineers, scientists, and applied mathematicians. The handbook is not specific to fixed research areas, but rather it has a generic flavor that can be applied by anyone working with probabilistic and stochastic analysis and modeling. Classic results are presented in their final form without derivation or discussion, allowing for much material to be condensed into one volume.

Book excerpt: The articles in this volume present the state of the art in a variety of areas of discrete probability, including random walks on finite and infinite graphs, random trees, renewal sequences, Stein's method for normal approximation and Kohonen-type self-organizing maps. This volume also focuses on discrete probability and its connections with the theory of algorithms. Classical topics in discrete mathematics are represented as are expositions that condense and make readable some recent work on Markov chains, potential theory and the second moment method. This volume is suitable for mathematicians and students.

Book excerpt: This book presents the first comprehensive introduction to free probability theory, a highly noncommutative probability theory with independence based on free products instead of tensor products. Basic examples of this kind of theory are provided by convolution operators on free groups and by the asymptotic behavior of large Gaussian random matrices. The probabilistic approach to free products has led to a recent surge of new results on the von Neumann algebras of free groups. The book is ideally suited as a textbook for an advanced graduate course and could also provide material for a seminar. In addition to researchers and graduate students in mathematics, this book will be of interest to physicists and others who use random matrices.

Book excerpt: In this book, by use of information technology, free software GeoGebra and existing definitions, random variable of discrete and continuous type will be visually introduced in a new way in addition to the traditional. In the beginning will review the definition of events and determine their probability. Then we will give emphasis on discrete random variable modeling probability situations with only two outcomes. The event can be repeated finite or infinite number of times. By analyses of examples we will go from Bernoulli, through binomial, to the geometric random variable, in which way we would be able to discover the similarities and differences of these variables. Continuous random variables with uniform, exponential and normal distribution will be visually represented in the end. We will see how graphics of random variables change depending on the values of their parameters. The various problems will be visually presented by an applet developed in GeoGebra, which is available on GeoGebra tube and help for easier visual representation of the problems, i.e. the areas of definition as well as for a set of positive events in order to come to a solution of the problems.

The basic building block of Ordered Random Variables is Order Statistics which has several applications in extreme value theory and ordered estimation. The general model for ordered random variables, known as Generalized Order Statistics has been introduced relatively recently by Kamps (1995).
