Book Synopsis Effects of Grain Boundary Structure in Discrete Simulations of Multiscale Dislocation Dynamics by : Nathaniel Burbery

This book was released on 2017 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research develops a multiscale approach to study the defect-driven evolution of the microstructure in polycrystalline FCC metals, by using atomic-informed models to reproduce multi-grain, microscale simulations with discrete dislocation dynamics (DD). The dynamically evolving dislocation and grain boundary (GB) microstructure dictate the non-linear ‘plastic’ response of polycrystalline metals during deformation. The processes of intercrystalline plastic coupling are generally a consequence of multi-dislocation pile up interactions with GBs, however such effects are beyond feasible limits of conventional atomic simulations or experimental studies. More accurate computational models of the discrete micro-macro scale dislocation and GB dynamics could be applied to elucidate the fundamental mechanisms and reduce the dependence on costly experimental testing. This work expands upon the physics-based single crystal DD framework by using molecular dynamics simulations to develop structure-property models that compensate for the variable characteristics of GB interfaces. This research involved studies with a broad set of equilibrium, non-equilibrium and metastable atomic bicrystals. The results showed that the intercrystalline strength was strongly influenced by the ‘GB shape’ characteristics of the structural free volume, in addition to the intrinsic energy. Defect interaction studies verified the realistic conditions for the observation of structural multiplicity, and showed the significance of intermediate ‘transitory’ GB states. Observation of the slip transmission process showed that the GB dislocations acted as pinning sites, so that the intercrystalline plasticity resembled Orowan-type obstacle bypassing. A novel multi-orientation approach was developed to provide a control routine for modelling atomistic dislocation dynamics that enabled a self-consistent multiscale comparison with DD simulations. Insights regarding dislocation core construction and Burgers vector analysis played an integral role in the development of atomically accurate DD representations of the GB dislocation structures. A world-first 3D polycrystal DD approach was implemented to provide a discrete representation of the dislocation structure of high angle GBs, through the culmination of the atomistic insights and many years of concerted code development. This robust, versatile implementation enables tailor-made polycrystal simulation specimens with arbitrary shape, grain orientation and size to be generated from common .stl files. The unique, comprehensive modelling framework provides a realistic reproduction of key intercrystalline slip mechanisms including GB sliding, dissociation and absorption, dislocation transmission and reflection. As such, the present work provides a novel contribution of relevance, particularly, to the developing sector of GB engineered nanocrystalline materials.

Download or read book Fundamental Aspects of Dislocation Interactions written by G. Kostorz and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamental Aspects of Dislocation Interactions: Low-Energy Dislocation Structures III covers the papers presented at a European Research Conference on Plasticity of Materials-Fundamental Aspects of Dislocation Interactions: Low-Energy Dislocation Structures III, held on August 30-September 4, 1992 in Ascona, Switzerland. The book focuses on the processes, technologies, reactions, transformations, and approaches involved in dislocation interactions. The selection first offers information on work softening and Hall-Petch hardening in extruded mechanically alloyed alloys and dynamic origin of dislocation structures in deformed solids. Discussions focus on stress-strain behavior in relation to composition, structure, and annealing; comparison of stress-strain curves with work softening theory; sweeping and trapping mechanism; and model of dipolar wall structure formation. The text then ponders on plastic instabilities and their relation to fracture and dislocation and kink dynamics in f.c.c. metals studied by mechanical spectroscopy. The book takes a look at misfit dislocation generation mechanisms in heterostructures and evolution of dislocation structure on the interfaces associated with diffusionless phase transitions. Discussions focus on dislocation representation of a wall of elastic domains; equation of equilibrium of an elastic domain; transformation of dislocations; and theoretical and experimental background. The selection is a valuable reference for readers interested in dislocation interactions.

Download or read book Atomistic Simulations of Dislocation Pileup written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here, using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we studied the dislocation pileup-grain boundary (GB) interactions. Two [Sigma]11 asymmetrical tilt grain boundaries in Al are studied to explore the influence of orientation relationship and interface structure on dislocation activities at grain boundaries. To mimic the reality of a dislocation pileup in a coarse-grained polycrystalline, we optimized the dislocation population in MD simulations and developed a predict-correct method to create a dislocation pileup in MD simulations. MD simulations explored several kinetic processes of dislocations-GB reactions: grain boundary sliding, grain boundary migration, slip transmission, dislocation reflection, reconstruction of grain boundary, and the correlation of these kinetic processes with the available slip systems across the GB and atomic structures of the GB.

This book was released on 2022-07-12 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A physically-based dislocation theory of plasticity is derived within an extended continuum mechanical context. Thermodynamically consistent flow rules at the grain boundaries are derived. With an analytical solution of a three-phase periodic laminate, dislocation pile-up at grain boundaries and dislocation transmission through the grain boundaries are investigated. For the finite element implementations, numerically efficient approaches are introduced based on accumulated field variables.

Book Synopsis Dislocations in Solids by : Hideji Suzuki
Download or read book Dislocations in Solids written by Hideji Suzuki and published by VSP. This book was released on 1985-12 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume comprises the Proceedings of the Yamada Conference IX on Dislocations in Solids, held in August 1984 in Tokyo. The purpose of the conference was two-fold: firstly to evaluate the increasing data on basic properties of dislocations and their interaction with other types of defects in solids and, secondly, to increase understanding of the material properties brought about by dislocation-related phenomena. Metals and alloys, semi-conductors and ions crystals were discussed. One of the important points of contention was the electronic state at the core of dislocation. Another was the dislocation model of amorphous structure.
Book Synopsis Mechanics of Dislocation Fields by : Claude Fressengeas
Download or read book Mechanics of Dislocation Fields written by Claude Fressengeas and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-09-25 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accompanying the present trend of engineering systems aimed at size reduction and design at microscopic/nanoscopic length scales, Mechanics of Dislocation Fields describes the self-organization of dislocation ensembles at small length scales and its consequences on the overall mechanical behavior of crystalline bodies. The account of the fundamental interactions between the dislocations and other microscopic crystal defects is based on the use of smooth field quantities and powerful tools from the mathematical theory of partial differential equations. The resulting theory is able to describe the emergence of dislocation microstructures and their evolution along complex loading paths. Scale transitions are performed between the properties of the dislocation ensembles and the mechanical behavior of the body. Several variants of this overall scheme are examined which focus on dislocation cores, electromechanical interactions of dislocations with electric charges in dielectric materials, the intermittency and scale-invariance of dislocation activity, grain-to-grain interactions in polycrystals, size effects on mechanical behavior and path dependence of strain hardening.
Book Synopsis An Atomistic Approach for the Survey of Dislocation-grain Boundary Interactions in FCC Nickel by : Devin William Adams
Download or read book An Atomistic Approach for the Survey of Dislocation-grain Boundary Interactions in FCC Nickel written by Devin William Adams and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is well known that grain boundaries (GBs) have a strong influence on mechanical properties of polycrystalline materials. Not as well-known is how different GBs interact with dislocations to influence dislocation movement. This work presents a molecular dynamics study of 33 different FC Ni bicrystals subjected to mechanical loading to induce incident dislocation-GB interactions. The resulting simulations are analyzed to determine properties of the interaction that affect the likelihood of transmission of the dislocation through the GB in an effort to better inform mesoscale models of dislocation movement within polycrystals. It is found that the ability to predict the slip system of a transmitted dislocation using common geometric criteria is confirmed. Furthermore, machine learning processes are implemented to find that geometric properties, such as the minimum potential residual burgers vector and the disorientation between the two grains, are stronger indicators of whether or not a dislocation would transmit than the other properties such as the resolved shear stress.
