Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rock Phosphates and Other Mineral Fertilisers: Their Origin, Value, and Sources of Supply HE need of some concise description of the sources of supply of mineral fertilisers has, to my mind, been apparent for some time past; in fact, this pamphlet is the outcome, in the first place, of notes taken while looking up the literature on phosphate deposits. Reliable descriptions of the deposits and material from which mineral fertilisers originate, and their modes of occurrence. Should prove useful to the pro spector. And for this reason several verbatim descriptions by different authors have been inserted. In a work of this kind, covering, as it does, so much ground, one is, of necessity, under obligation to many workers. The observations of any one person, however capable and industrious, would be a very incomplete record. Various Opinions are expressed on one and the same deposit, and the necessity devolves upon the author to sift the evidence and strike as near to the true version as is possible. References to various authors will be found in the text. In any partially explored and exploited country such information as is herein afforded should not only have an interest for those who use fertilisers, but be of value to everyone who travels about with eyes open, if only for com parison, for the discovery of similar deposits to those described may mean a fortune to the discoverer. Up-to-date statistics are not available, but the latest obtainable are given. Some idea of the magnitude and com mercial importance of the industries will be apparent from the statistics, and the descriptions of the deposits will show the intelligent prospector where and for what to look for similar occurrences. There is no apparent reason why rock phosphate deposits, nitrate deposits, or potash and salt beds, other than those already discovered, should not exist in Australia. Nature, for some unaccountable reason, often places her best treasures in localities that are hopelessly barren for other purposes. It is impossible to say what value may lie beneath the surface in those flat areas of slight elevation that stretch inland from the coast until they have been prospected. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Phosphate Rock in the Three Forks-Yellowstone Park Region, Montana Yellowstone Park northwestward through Salesville to Willow Creek, on Jefferson River. Its thicker parts contain 45 to 65 per cent of tricalcium phosphate. In this region the phosphate deposit is thinner and of poorer quality than in the adjoining parts of Montana on the west and northwest, where it is commonly 4 feet thick and contains 65 to 70 per cent of tricalcium phosphate. In southeastern Idaho the deposit is still thicker and richer. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. They also contain the highest mountains in Utah, many of which exceed 13,000 feet, including Kings Peak at 13,528 feet -- the highest point in Utah. There are well over 1,000 natural lakes and over 400 miles of streams in this 100-mile long range in northeastern Utah. While the intended scope of this book is fairly broad, the author presents the geologic story of the Uinta Mountains with a clarity and wit that gives this book a unique and popular appeal.

This new edition of Mules and Men features a new cover and a P.S. section which includes insights, interviews, and more. For the student of cultural history, Mules and Men is a treasury of Black America’s folklore as collected by Zora Neale Hurston, the storyteller and anthropologist who grew up hearing the songs and sermons, sayings and tall tales that have formed and oral history of the South since the time of slavery. Set intimately within the social context of Black life, the stories, “big old lies,” songs, voodoo customs, and superstitions recorded in these pages capture the imagination and bring back to life the humor and wisdom that is the unique heritage of Black Americans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growth and development witnessed today in modern science, engineering, and technology owes a heavy debt to the rare, refractory, and reactive metals group, of which niobium is a member. Extractive Metallurgy of Niobium presents a vivid account of the metal through its comprehensive discussions of properties and applications, resources and resource processing, chemical processing and compound preparation, metal extraction, and refining and consolidation. Typical flow sheets adopted in some leading niobium-producing countries for the beneficiation of various niobium sources are presented, and various chemical processes for producing pure forms of niobium intermediates such as chloride, fluoride, and oxide are discussed. The book also explains how to liberate the metal from its intermediates and describes the physico-chemical principles involved. It is an excellent reference for chemical metallurgists, hydrometallurgists, extraction and process metallurgists, and minerals processors. It is also valuable to a wide variety of scientists, engineers, technologists, and students interested in the topic.
