Book excerpt: Cork, capital of the Rebel County, has enjoyed a long and illustrious history, and is unique among Ireland's cities in that it has experienced every phase of Irish urban development. It is a city of hills and bridges, churches and steeples, nestled around the two branches of the River Lee. Part One explores the history of Cork including its origins as an early Christian monastic centre; the creation of a Viking port and an Anglo-Norman walled town; its transformation through Georgian and Victorian times to the twentieth century and beyond. Part Two visits Cork's most interesting buildings and landmarks, including Shandon Church, Elizabeth Fort, St FinBarre's Cathedral, Red Abbey, SS Peter and Paul's Church, the Mardyke and Fitzgerald Park, Holy Trinity Church, and St Patrick's Hill. The first book of its kind on Cork, Discover Cork is a beautifully presented and detailed exploration of the history and geography of the city.

Book excerpt: Cork has long been an important hub for international trade, including the lucrative transatlantic routes. This wealth is reflected in the city's fine architecture, which boasts a wide variety of styles, from Neoclassical to Gothic. Following on from their successful Dublin Strolls, the Brackens guide us on charming walks through Cork's architecture, sharing expert insights and intriguing historical detail along the way. Striking hand-drawn illustrations capture the beauty of Ireland's second city. Each of the walks through the city starts where the previous one left off, allowing readers to extend their explorations. They are bookended by landmarks of the city skyline: to the north, the Cathedral of St Mary and St Anne in Shandon and to the west, St Vincent's Church in Sunday's Well. In between, they meander through the city, taking in Ireland's tallest building, the hotel where Michael Collins spent his last night and classic Cork sights such as the English Market, St Fin Barre's Cathedral, and the old Beamish and Crawford brewery. There are also strolls covering outlying attractions like Fota House and Blarney Castle, as well as the neighbouring seaside towns of Cobh and Kinsale. This illuminating guide reveals the city and county in a whole new light.

Book excerpt: INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER AND A NEW YORK TIMES CRITICS' PICK “Thrilling . . . [told] with gonzo élan . . . When the sommelier and blogger Madeline Puckette writes that this book is the Kitchen Confidential of the wine world, she’s not wrong, though Bill Buford’s Heat is probably a shade closer.” —Jennifer Senior, The New York Times Professional journalist and amateur drinker Bianca Bosker didn’t know much about wine—until she discovered an alternate universe where taste reigns supreme, a world of elite sommeliers who dedicate their lives to the pursuit of flavor. Astounded by their fervor and seemingly superhuman sensory powers, she set out to uncover what drove their obsession, and whether she, too, could become a “cork dork.” With boundless curiosity, humor, and a healthy dose of skepticism, Bosker takes the reader inside underground tasting groups, exclusive New York City restaurants, California mass-market wine factories, and even a neuroscientist’s fMRI machine as she attempts to answer the most nagging question of all: what’s the big deal about wine? What she learns will change the way you drink wine—and, perhaps, the way you live—forever. “Think: Eat, Pray, Love meets Somm.” —theSkimm “As informative as it is, well, intoxicating.” —Fortune

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finding Your Family History in Co. Cork This is the illustrated, book that focuses exclusively on families of County Cork. Part of the Irish Families Project, it includes: Catholic and Protestant; native Irish; settler families from England, Scotland, and Wales; County Map; Coats of Arms; and more.. Information contained here-in dates from the earliest times to the modern era. Expands Upon Earlier Information The Master Volume in the Irish Families series is 'The Book of Irish Families, great & small'. It covers thousands of families from all of Ireland. 'Families of Co. Cork' greatly expands upon the coverage given in that book and adds several hundred new families. In this way both books compliment each other. 'Families of Co. Cork' is the 4th volume in the series, which covers every county in Ireland and Northern Ireland. It was published by the Irish Genealogical Foundation and edited by Michael C. O'Laughlin. An outline of the history of the county as it relates to Irish families, and to Irish research, is included, along with an exhaustive enumeration of thousands of Cork families, sure to help any family researcher. Expanded Information When needed, sources are given for further research. Family castles, dates of occupation and locations are given. Ordinary Cork people, from the 17th to the 19th century are included too. The following is taken from the introduction to this book, and helps set the stage for the family history that follows in the bulk of this work. " The Vikings settled here centuries before the Norman invasion, and are credited with establishing the city of Cork. Their settlement did not lead to the great upheaval that the Norman invasion eventually caused. The Skiddys, Coppingers and Cotters were a few of the 'Viking' families that settled here at an early date, and remained in relative peace. (see surname entries of those families in text of this book). The Norman Invasion Robert Fitz-Stephen and Miles (Milo) de Cogan were granted the entire kingdom of Cork in 1177 by King Henry II. (This did not include however the city and land belonging to the Ostmen, also called Danes or Vikings.) Cork lands could only be taken slowly at first by the Normans. Many Anglo-Norman families and their retainers (undertakers) had to be settled here for that purpose over time. Large tracts of land were held by many of these families subsequently, including the Carews, De Courcys, Fitzgeralds and Barretts. Sir Richard Boyle, who became the Earl of Cork, helped with the plantation of many English here. They were 'settled' in direct opposition to the old Gaelic families native to the land, who stood to lose their homes, lands, and power. Many battles were fought and much blood shed on both sides of the line, which at times became blurred. Castles were numerous and often necessary to protect life and limb. " Families with major entries in this book include: Mc Auliffe; Barry; Callaghan; Mac Carthy; Coppinger; Mac Cotter; Courcy deCourcey; O Crowley; O Daly; O Donovan; O Driscoll; Herlihy; Hyde; O Keeffe, O'Keefe; Lane; O'Leary; Long; O' Mahoney; Nagle; Reardon; Regane; Roach; Sheehan; O' Sullivan; Sweeney; Twomey and Walsh, Welsh....and so on..... Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cork oak has historically been an important species in the western Mediterranean—ecologically as a canopy or “framework” tree in natural woodlands, and culturally as an economically valuable resource that underpins local economies. Both the natural woodlands and the derived cultural systems are experiencing rapid change, and whether or not they are resilient enough to adapt to that change is an open question. Cork Oak Woodlands on the Edge provides a synthesis of the most up-to-date, scientific, and practical information on the management of cork oak woodlands and the cultural systems that depend on cork oak. In addition, Cork Oak Woodlands on the Edge offers ten site profiles written by local experts that present an in-depth vision of cork oak woodlands across a range of biophysical, historical, and cultural contexts, with sixteen pages of full-color photos that illustrate the tree, agro-silvopastoral systems, products, resident biodiversity, and more. Cork Oak Woodlands on the Edge is an important book for anyone interested in the future of cork oak woodlands, or in the management of cultural landscapes and their associated land-use systems. In a changing world full of risks and surprises, it represents an excellent example of a multidisciplinary and holistic approach to studying, managing, and restoring an ecosystem, and will serve as a guide for other studies of this kind.
