Download or read book Discontinuous Deformation Analysis in Rock Mechanics Practice written by Yossef H. Hatzor and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-07-20 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The numerical, discrete element, Discontinuous Deformation Analysis (DDA) method was developed by Dr. Gen-hua Shi while he was working at the University of California, Berkeley, under the supervision of Prof. Richard E. Goodman in the late 1980s. Two-dimensional DDA was published in 1993 and three-dimensional DDA in 2001. Since its publication DDA has been verified, validated and applied in numerous studies worldwide and is now considered a powerful and robust method to address both static and dynamic engineering problems in discontinuous rock masses. In this book Yossef H. Hatzor and Guowei Ma, co-chairs of the International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) Commission on DDA, join Dr. Shi in authoring a monograph that presents the state of the art in DDA research. A comprehensive discussion of DDA development since its publication is provided in Chapter 1, followed by concise reviews of 2D and 3D DDA in chapters 2 and 3. Procedures to select geological and numerical input parameters for DDA are discussed in Chapter 4, and DDA validation and verification is presented in Chapter 5. Applications of DDA in underground and rock slope engineering projects are discussed in chapters 6 and 7. In Chapter 8 the novel contact theory recently developed by Dr. Shi is published in its complete form, for the first time. This book is published within the framework of the ISRM Book Series and is the contribution of the ISRM DDA Commission to the international rock mechanics community.
Book Synopsis Geomechanics and Geotechnics of Particulate Media by : Masayuki Hyodo
Download or read book Geomechanics and Geotechnics of Particulate Media written by Masayuki Hyodo and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microscopic re-examination of geomaterials consisting of aggregates can shed light on macroscopic behaviour, including compressibility, anisotropy, yielding, creep, cyclic liquefaction and shear rupture. As a result of this process of examination, new methods of material characterization emerge, leading to a greater degree of accuracy in the specification of new constitutive models with physically-meaningful parameters. The impetus behind this development is an increasing awareness on sustainability, leading to the more efficient use of recycled materials for geotechnical applications. The characteristics of recycled materials, such as compressibility and self-hardening, may differ significantly from those of natural materials, and it is crucial that evaluation is made from a specifically particulate perspective.
Book Synopsis Advanced Computational Methods and Geomechanics by : Shenghong Chen
Download or read book Advanced Computational Methods and Geomechanics written by Shenghong Chen and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-01 with total page 782 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is intended, through parallel expounding, to help readers comprehensively grasp the intrinsic features of typical advanced computational methods. These methods are created in recent three decades for the understanding of the post-failure of geo-materials accompanied with discontinuous and finite deformation/dislocation, as well as the violent fluid-structure interaction accompanied with strong distortion of water surface. The strong points and weak points of the formalisms for governing equations, the discretization schemes, the nodal interpolation /approximation of field variables, and their connectivity (via support domains, covers, or enrichments), the basic algorithms, etc., are clarified. Being aware of that the differences in these methods are not so large as at the first glance, this book will help readers to select appropriate methods, to improve the methods for their specific purpose, and to evaluate the reliability/applicability of the outcomes in the hazard evaluation of geotechnical (hydraulic) structures beyond extreme work situation. This book may be looked at as an advanced continuation of “Computational Geomechanics and Hydraulic Structures” by the author (2018) (Springer-Verlag, ISBN 978-981-10-8134-7) which elaborates the fundamental computational methods in geomechanics for the routine design of geotechnical (hydraulic) engineering.

Book Synopsis Structural Engineering, Mechanics and Computation by : A. Zingoni
Download or read book Structural Engineering, Mechanics and Computation written by A. Zingoni and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2001-03-16 with total page 1704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following on from the International Conference on Structural Engineering, Mechanics and Computation, held in Cape Town in April 2001, this book contains the Proceedings, in two volumes. There are over 170 papers written by Authors from around 40 countries worldwide. The contributions include 6 Keynote Papers and 12 Special Invited Papers. In line with the aims of the SEMC 2001 International Conference, and as may be seen from the List of Contents, the papers cover a wide range of topics under a variety of themes. There is a healthy balance between papers of a theoretical nature, concerned with various aspects of structural mechanics and computational issues, and those of a more practical nature, addressing issues of design, safety and construction. As the contributions in these Proceedings show, new and more efficient methods of structural analysis and numerical computation are being explored all the time, while exciting structural materials such as glass have recently come onto the scene. Research interest in the repair and rehabilitation of existing infrastructure continues to grow, particularly in Europe and North America, while the challenges to protect human life and property against the effects of fire, earthquakes and other hazards are being addressed through the development of more appropriate design methods for buildings, bridges and other engineering structures.
Book Synopsis Fundamentals of Discrete Element Methods for Rock Engineering: Theory and Applications by : Lanru Jing

This book was released on 2007-07-18 with total page 563 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents some fundamental concepts behind the basic theories and tools of discrete element methods (DEM), its historical development, and its wide scope of applications in geology, geophysics and rock engineering. Unlike almost all books available on the general subject of DEM, this book includes coverage of both explicit and implicit DEM approaches, namely the Distinct Element Methods and Discontinuous Deformation Analysis (DDA) for both rigid and deformable blocks and particle systems, and also the Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) approach for fluid flow and solute transport simulations. The latter is actually also a discrete approach of importance for rock mechanics and rock engineering. In addition, brief introductions to some alternative approaches are also provided, such as percolation theory and Cosserat micromechanics equivalence to particle systems, which often appear hand-in-hand with the DEM in the literature. Fundamentals of the particle mechanics approach using DEM for granular media is also presented.· Presents the fundamental concepts of the discrete models for fractured rocks, including constitutive models of rock fractures and rock masses for stress, deformation and fluid flow· Provides a comprehensive presentation on discrete element methods, including distinct elements, discontinuous deformation analysis, discrete fracture networks, particle mechanics and Cosserat representation of granular media· Features constitutive models of rock fractures and fracture system characterization methods detaiing their significant impacts on the performance and uncertainty of the DEM models
Book Synopsis Engineering Applications of Discrete Element Method by : Xuewen Wang
Download or read book Engineering Applications of Discrete Element Method written by Xuewen Wang and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-10 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the engineering application of the discrete element method (DEM), especially the simulation analysis of the typical equipment (scraper conveyor, coal silos, subsoiler) in the coal and agricultural machinery. In this book, the DEM is applied to build rigid and loose coupling model, and the kinematic effect of the bulk materials, the mechanical effect of the interaction between the bulk materials, and the mechanical equipment in the operation process of the relevant equipment are studied. On this basis, the optimization design strategy of the relevant structure is proposed. This book effectively promotes the application of DEM in engineering, analyzes the operation state, failure mechanism, and operation effect of related equipment in operation, and provides theoretical basis for the optimal design of equipment. The book is intended for undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in mechanical engineering, researchers investigating coal and agricultural machinery, and engineers working on designing related equipments.

Book Synopsis Guidelines for Probabilistic Performance-Based Seismic Design and Assessment of Slope Engineering by : Yu Huang
Download or read book Guidelines for Probabilistic Performance-Based Seismic Design and Assessment of Slope Engineering written by Yu Huang and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-03-16 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a new design and evaluation framework based on slope Stochastic Dynamics theory to probabilistic seismic performance for slope engineering. For the seismic dynamic stability safety of slope, it shifts from deterministic seismic dynamic analysis to quantitative analysis based on nonlinear stochastic dynamics, that is, from qualitative to the description of stochasticity of earthquake excitation that meet the needs in related design specification and establish a performance standard. In the nonlinear dynamic time history analysis of slope subjected to seismic ground motion, the term “randomness” is used to express the uncertainty in the intensity and frequency of earthquake excitation for slope engineering dynamic seismic performance. It mainly includes seismic design fortification standard, corresponding ground motion excitation, performance index threshold, and slope deterministic nonlinear seismic dynamic response. Even more than that, the seismic dynamic large deformation approaches of the whole process and comprehensive analysis for flow analysis after slope instability failure. Eventually, the probabilistic seismic dynamic performance of the slope engineering will be characterized by nonlinear dynamic reliability.
