Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discontinuously working elements (on-off controls) are widely used in automatic control systems. From an engineering point of view they are attractive because they are nearly always Simpler, more rugged, and cheaper to build than continuous controls. But prediction of their effects in the controlled system is sometimes so complicated that engineers have avoided discontinuous control where it would have been preferable to continuous control. This book was released on 1953 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method for computing the steady-state span load distribution on an elastic airplane wing for specified airplane weights and load factors is given. The method is based on a modification of the Weissinger L-method and applies at subcritical Mach numbers. It includes the effects of external stores and fuselage on the spanwise loading. Modifications are outlined for treating tail-boom and tailless airplane configurations and for calculating the divergence dynamic pressure of a swept wing with a large external store. A method is also outlined for reducing wind-tunnel data to obtain effective aerodynamic coefficients which are free of model flexibility effects. The effects of Mach number can readily be evaluated from the aerodynamic coefficients thus obtained.

Book excerpt: Fundamentals of missile and nuclear weapons systems are presented in this book which is primarily prepared as the second text of a three-volume series for students of the Navy Reserve Officers' Training Corps and the Officer Candidate School. Following an introduction to guided missiles and nuclear physics, basic principles and theories are discussed with a background of the factors affecting missile flight, airframes, missile propulsion systems, control components and systems, missile guidance, guided missile ships and systems, nuclear weapons, and atomic warfare defense. In the area of missile guidance, further explanations are made of command guidance, beam-rider methods, homing systems, preset guidance, and navigational guidance systems. Effects of nuclear weapons are also described in categories of air, surface, subsurface, underwater, underground, and high-altitude bursts as well as various kinds of damages and injuries. Besides illustrations for explanation purposes, a table of atomic weights and a glossary of general terms are provided in the appendices.

Book excerpt: This book gives in a concise and easy to understand form the various aspects of Practical Design of Flight Control Systems for Launch Vehicles and Missiles. It covers almost every aspect of Flight Control System Design which a designer would like to know, such as mission considerations, control requirements for various segments of the flight trajectory and different types of control effectors. It further gives generalized equations of motion with a novel method of incorporating structural flexibility and propellant sloshing which does not require rederivation, and very easy and common sense approach to deriving slosh and gimballed engine dynamic equations. Subsequently it gives the control system configurations, power plant sizing, loop design for linearised system and detailed analysis and design of on-off reaction control systems. It also covers various software features which are necessary for actual implementation of the design in flight missions, robustness features to avoid malfunctioning in some circumstances, design validation aspects including end-to-end sign checks and describes some flight experiences which called for design updates. The book is unique for its strong practical flavour and is directly useful to the working engineers in the field and post graduate students in Aerospace Engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Missile Guidance, Second Edition provides a timely survey of missile control and guidance theory, based on extensive work the author has done using the Lyapunov approach. This new edition also presents the Lyapunov-Bellman approach for choosing optimal parameters of the guidance laws, and direct and inverse optimal problems are considered. This material is important for readers working in the areas of optimization and optimal theory. This edition also contains updated coverage of guidance and control system components, since the efficiency of guidance laws depends on their realization. The text concludes with information on the new generation of intercept systems now in development.

Book excerpt: Nonlinear Differential Equations and Nonlinear Mechanics provides information pertinent to nonlinear differential equations, nonlinear mechanics, control theory, and other related topics. This book discusses the properties of solutions of equations in standard form in the infinite time interval. Organized into 49 chapters, this book starts with an overview of the characteristic types of differential equation systems with small parameters. This text then explains the structurally stable fields on a differentiable two manifold are the ones that exhibit the simplest features. Other chapters explore the canonic system of hyperbolic partial differential equations with fixed characteristics. This book discusses as well the monofrequent oscillations that are predominantly near one or the other of the linear modes of motion. The final chapter deals with the existence and asymptotic character of solutions of the nonlinear boundary value problem. This book is a valuable resource for pure and applied mathematicians. Aircraft engineers will also find this book useful.
