Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building Your Field of Dreams is both a compelling personal story and a practical and inspiring guide for anyone who has ever hoped for a better life. Mary Morrissey's own dreams were nearly shattered at age 16, when pregnancy forced her into a reluctant marriage that nevertheless became the crucible for remarkable lessons in faith. As she was tested by the near-death of one of her children, by life-threatening kidney disease, and by years of struggling to make ends meet, she clung to her determination to be a minister. Now, with powerful examples from many dream-builders she has known, she shows how anyone can identify their deepest desires, build a partnership with God, confront obstacles and failure, and overcome the mental blocks that keep us from our potential. It's a great message, compellingly delivered by a great teacher. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Book excerpt: Here is wisdom for the workplace from the husband-and-wife team of the nationally syndicated public radio series New Dimensions, which airs each week on more than 300 stations and is often described as "Bill Moyers on radio." Some people are consumed by their work, others simply endure it as they anticipate the weekend or retirement, and hardly anyone enjoys it anymore. If we could find a way to transform how we view what we do so that it becomes a source of enjoyment and refreshment, it would be a cause for celebration. And indeed, this is exactly what Michael and Justine Toms provide in their remarkable book--the fruit of their own twenty-five years of practical experience. According to the Toms, the bottom line is: Has our compassion grown with our business? Has our wisdom expanded with our budget? And has our laughter increased with our staff? Their book looks at work as service and as a spiritually sustaining activity that promotes healing. It is brimful with stories and helpful techniques culled from their radio interviews with Joseph Campbell, Buckminster Fuller, the Dalai Lama, Alice Walker, Jon Kabat-Zinn, Marsha Sinetar, and many others.

Book excerpt: The novel that inspired Field of Dreams: “A lyrical, seductive, and altogether winning concoction.” —The New York Times Book Review One of Sports Illustrated’s 100 Greatest Sports Books “If you build it, he will come.” When Ray Kinsella hears these mysterious words spoken in the voice of an Iowa baseball announcer, he is inspired to carve a baseball diamond in his cornfield. It is a tribute to his hero, the legendary Shoeless Joe Jackson, whose reputation was forever tarnished by the scandalous 1919 World Series. What follows is a timeless story that is “not so much about baseball as it is about dreams, magic, life, and what is quintessentially American” (The Philadelphia Inquirer). “A triumph of hope.” —The Boston Globe “A moonlit novel about baseball, dreams, family, the land, and literature.” —Sports Illustrated

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The final novel of one of America’s most beloved writers—a tale of degeneration, corruption, and spiritual crisis A Penguin Classic In awarding John Steinbeck the 1962 Nobel Prize in Literature, the Nobel committee stated that with The Winter of Our Discontent, he had “resumed his position as an independent expounder of the truth, with an unbiased instinct for what is genuinely American.” Ethan Allen Hawley, the protagonist of Steinbeck’s last novel, works as a clerk in a grocery store that his family once owned. With Ethan no longer a member of Long Island’s aristocratic class, his wife is restless, and his teenage children are hungry for the tantalizing material comforts he cannot provide. Then one day, in a moment of moral crisis, Ethan decides to take a holiday from his own scrupulous standards. Set in Steinbeck’s contemporary 1960 America, the novel explores the tenuous line between private and public honesty, and today ranks alongside his most acclaimed works of penetrating insight into the American condition. This Penguin Classics edition features an introduction and notes by leading Steinbeck scholar Susan Shillinglaw. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Book excerpt: U.S. Marine Corps Veteran and former law enforcement officer tells his controversial family story: I was a rookie cop working patrol when the local newspaper wanted a story about minority rookie cops on the job. Ironically they chose me. They didn't know what can of worms they were opening and wanted to know my struggles in coming to America. I began remembering my controversial past. You see, my parents came to the United States illegally looking for a better way of life. Unfortunately after years of struggling here my father began selling drugs to stay afloat. Needless to say that that lifestyle was a rollercoaster ride full of dangerous frightening risks. Thankfully God intervened and consequently my father was arrested and sentenced to 15 years in prison where he surrendered to Jesus. He witnessed many blessings which made me want to know Jesus too. Unfortunately my life was also in shambles from my poor decisions and I found myself joining the Marine Corps. I became a proud patriot and began loving this country, my country, and this is why I am sharing my controversial story with all of America, hopefully inspiring people to make better choices in life because ultimatley they affect our future and our freedom. May we also continue to have a country that inspires huge dreams, great ideas, and great music. A country that still can say Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free (Emma Lazarus). I still want this country to be around for my grandchildrens grandchildren, so lets keep the American dream alive! Hoorah, semper fidelis!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One thing this book attempts to show is that Kant's antinomies open a way towards an overcoming of that nihilism that is a corollary of the understanding of reality that presides over our science and technology. But when Harries is speaking of the antinomy of Being he is not so much thinking of Kant, as of Heidegger. Not that Heidegger speaks of an antinomy of Being. But his thinking of Being leads him and will lead those who follow him on his path of thinking into this antinomy. At bottom, however, the author is neither concerned with Heidegger’s nor Kant’s thought. He shows that our thinking inevitably leads us into some version of this antinomy whenever it attempts to grasp reality in toto, without loss. All such attempts will fall short of their goal. And that they do so, Harries claims, is not something to be grudgingly accepted, but embraced as a necessary condition of living a meaningful life. That is why the antinomy of Being matters and should concern us all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can a movie feed your soul? Stories. Be it a parable of Jesus, a C.S. Lewis fantasy, or a movie such as Saving Private Ryan, stories have been around since Creation, a means of both education and entertainment. By far, our favorite way to listen to a story today is at the movies, whether in a theater or a family room. Indeed, says Ken Gire, movies are the parables of our culture and —earthly stories that sometimes have heavenly meanings. Can we discern God's voice in the modern parables of film? Yes, it is there, sometimes loud and crystal-clear, sometimes barely a whisper, sometimes even despite the filmmaker's intent. In Reflections on the Movies, Ken helps us: and • sensitize our "eyes to hear and ears to hear" God speaking, and • develop the skills to understand movies and their themes, and and • learn to reflect on the medium as a form of spiritual enrichment. In 1999, Ken was one of thirty Christians selected for a month-long study under some of the film industry's top talent in Hollywood. He has led numerous spiritual retreats where he has used movie clips to illustrate his messages. Reflections on the Movies and Ken's previous books in this series and —The Reflective Live, Reflections on the Word, a devotional, and Reflections on Your Life, a journal and —are designed to help you become more spiritually sensitive to the everyday moments of life.
