Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the eagerly awaited new edition of Law of Torts, the complete Irish tort law reference book. For this, the contents have been extensively revised since the last edition was published in 2000. Key developments are detailed and relevant recent case law is examined. This book is essential for both legal practitioners and people studying Irish law. Recent important legislation examined in the book includes: Criminal Law (Defence and the Dwelling) Act 2011, Civil Law (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2011, Defamation Act 2009, Consumer Protection Act 2007, Civil Liability and Courts Act 2004 and Personal Injuries Assessment Board Act 2003. Key developments and case law are examined in areas such as pure economic loss, limitations and purchase of financial products, vicarious liability for sexual assaults, damages, privacy, defamation, psychiatric injury, liability of public authorities, employers' liability, professional negligence, defective buildings and products and occupiers' liability. First published in 1980, Law of Torts has long been a cornerstone work in Irish law, indeed in the foreword to the first edition Judge Brian Walshe noted that the book represented a challenge to the 'unquestioned assumption that English text-books would satisfy all needs.' This new addition will only add to the book's long-established merit and value.

Book excerpt: Detective Billy Harney’s reputation as a dirty cop may be the only thing keeping Chicago clean in James Patterson’s most critically-acclaimed thriller since The Black Book. For Detective Billy Harney, getting shot in the head, stalked by a state’s attorney, and accused of murder by his fellow cops is a normal week on the job. So when a drive-by shooting on the Chicago's west side turns political, he leads the way to a quick solve. But Harney's instincts—his father was once chief of detectives and his twin sister, Patti, is also on the force—run deep. As a population hungry for justice threatens to riot, he realizes that the three known victims are hardly the only casualties. When Harney starts asking questions about who's to blame, the easy answers prove to be the wrong ones. On the flip side, the less he seems to know, the longer he can keep his clandestine investigation going . . . until Harney's quest to expose the evil that's rotting the city from the inside out takes him to the one place he vowed never to return: his own troubled past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great over-representation of young drivers in crashes and road fatalities is a serious public health problem that exacts an unacceptable toll in human, social and economic terms. Young drivers account for about 27 per cent of driver fatalities across OECD countries, although people in the same age group represent only about 10 per cent of the population. Furthermore, between 20 and 30 per cent of total traffic fatalities result from crashes involving a young driver. Young male drivers' crash fatality rates are as much as three times those of young female drivers, and remain much higher even when adjusted to factor in their higher rates of exposure. In some countries, young males' relative risk, compared to that of other drivers, is increasing. The high levels of young driver risk result principally from factors of inexperience, age, and gender. This risk is aggravated by the circumstances under which many young people drive - young people, especially men, are over-represented in crashes at high speed, at night, with similarly aged passengers, involving alcohol, and often when not wearing seatbelts. There is no single solution. The goal of reduced young driver crashes must be pursued through a combination of countermeasures involving the licensing process, training and learning methods, enforcement, education and communication, and technology.

Above all, the book is a personal narrative, but it also holds academic reflection, models, and inspiring exercises. Along the way, Uffe Elbæk takes the reader to such different places as Aarhus, Moscow, Kiruna, San Francisco, Durban, Dublin, Reykjavik, Havana, Hong Kong, London and Copenhagen.
