Book excerpt: The pitfalls of sin and sensuality keep Enoch dazed and confused as he tries to grasp his calling from above. He uses narcotics, indulges in promiscuous behavior, and commits abominable atrocities against others. After wandering to and fro across the globe, Enoch tries to find peace of mind, but discovers a world of chaos. Ultimately he falls in love and marries a virtuous woman, but he has an illicit affair and the marriage is annulled. Disciplined Order Chaotic Lunacy delves into the mind of a man bordering on madness. Enoch struggles in his relationship with God. He battles his own personal demons and is haunted by visions of doom and destruction. Will this prophet find his way back to the path of righteousness, or will he be lost forever to the depths of hell?

Book excerpt: 1,260 Days is a journey to a foreign land, a detour called a shortcut in a cab. Its riding on a night train in a warm sweat as you hear the choo choo chuggen down the tracks. Its a vision in a restless dream, a nightmare with a bloody scene, a demon putting thoughts into your head. 1,260 Days is about the man in black. Its about a work shift. Its about a suicidal note. Its the unheard music. Its a forty-day fast. Its a severed artery. Its an itchy rash. 1,260 Days is a holy book. Its a trumpet being blown upon a hill. Its a paradox. Its a riddle. Its a jest. Its hope. Its change. Its woe. Its greed. Its me. Its you. Its them. Its us. 1,260 Days is about the end of the world. I found myself alternately astounded, intrigued, and ultimately jealous of Enoch, whose adventures on a daily basis made my own life seem small and mundane by comparison. Rich Marotta, KFI Radio Inducted 2011, Southern California Sportscasters Hall of Fame Brilliant manurevres of narrative wreaking havoc upon accepted norms. Tortelvis of Dread Zeppelin An honest and straightforward book, one mans experiment with disgrace takes on an aura of supernaturally experienced grace. Easy on the ear and steering clear of massaging his own story-telling of an awfully curious humanity, Conte gives a read hell-bent on making us experience the nit and grit of rubbing up against the taboos binding human pleasure. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is common knowledge that slavery and indenture were characterized by long hours of physical labor, restriction of movement and other basic human freedoms, and severe punishment for violations of draconian labor laws. Less well known is the fact that nutrition was very deficient and a range of infectious diseases maimed, debilitated and killed on a large scale. In trying to narrow the knowledge gap with respect to Guyana, Ramesh Gampat shows that extremely poor sanitary conditions, awful hygiene and malnutrition hastened widespread infections and created a vicious cycle. The British protected its own soldiers, officials and colonists by establishing a medical enclave that lasted until Emancipation in 1838. Former slaves were then quarantined to neglected and decaying villages and Indians to plantations. Concern with health conditions appeared only during periods of epidemics and even then it was essentially for the protection of Europeans. Colonial medicine opened the way for stereotyping, labeling, racialization of disease, neutralization of potential leaders in the struggle for justice, and crystallization of the view that Europeans were superior to Blacks and Indians. Shorter stature and shorter life expectancy are good indications that slaves and indentured immigrants fared considerably less well than Europeans. Several infectious diseases sickened and fell Blacks and Indians, including malaria and undefined fevers, pneumonia and bronchitis, diarrhea and enteritis, tuberculosis, pneumonia and hookworm. The conquest of malaria in the early 1950s accelerated the epidemiological transition from communicable to chronic noncommunicable diseases, and today NCDs account for some three-quarters of all deaths in Guyana. Malaria has reemerged, fueled by a gold boom that consumes huge amounts of mercury. The potentially adverse public health consequences of this relatively new dynamic, the combined trio, have been neglected.
