Book Synopsis Disciplining Girls by : Joe Sutliff Sanders
Download or read book Disciplining Girls written by Joe Sutliff Sanders and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2011-12-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the heart of some of the most beloved children’s novels is a passionate discussion about discipline, love, and the changing role of girls in the twentieth century. Joe Sutliff Sanders traces this debate as it began in the sentimental tales of the mid-nineteenth century and continued in the classic orphan girl novels of Louisa May Alcott, Frances Hodgson Burnett, L. M. Montgomery, and other writers still popular today. Domestic novels published between 1850 and 1880 argued that a discipline that emphasized love was the most effective and moral form. These were the first best sellers in American fiction, and by reimagining discipline as a technique of the heart—rather than of the whip—they ensured their protagonists a secure, if limited, claim on power. This same ideal was adapted by women authors in the early twentieth century, who transformed the sentimental motifs of domestic novels into the orphan girl story made popular in such novels as Anne of Green Gables and Pollyanna. Through close readings of nine of the most influential orphan girl novels, Sanders provides a seamless historical narrative of American children’s literature and gender from 1850 until 1923. He follows his insightful literary analysis with chapters on sympathy and motherhood, two themes central to both American and children’s literature, and concludes with a discussion of contemporary ideas about discipline, abuse, and gender. Disciplining Girls writes an important chapter in the history of American, women’s, and children’s literature, enriching previous work about the history of discipline in America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Would you like to live a more fulfilling life? A life marked by closeness to God, love for others, self-care, and productive purpose? Just about any life improvement requires one thing: changing behavior. You’ll either have to start a new behavior, refine an old one, or stop an unwanted behavior altogether. The decision to change behavior can be daunting because changing habits and routines is often difficult. Changes can bring about good, but they can also upend usual ways of doing things. This book guides you in how to change just about any behavior for what the apostle Paul called “a more excellent way.” The guidance is rooted in cutting-edge social science research joined with Christian understanding of the good life and how to achieve it. From this blended perspective, the book presents a general model for how you can effectively change your behavior. It gives you dozens of practical, proven strategies that you can start using right away. What’s the secret to behavior change? It happens best when a person combines several strategies. First, they start small. Next, they find ways to motivate themselves and to cultivate their spiritual gift of self-control. Finally, in all steps, they invite Christ into the process: through Scripture, prayer, and fellowship. Imagine what your life would be like if you could better match what you do daily to what matters most to you both now and eternally! Matching your behavior to your core values with God alongside is the key to creating a truly beautiful life.
Book Synopsis Practices of Love by : Kyle David Bennett
Download or read book Practices of Love written by Kyle David Bennett and published by Brazos Press. This book was released on 2017-08-22 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spiritual disciplines are often viewed primarily as a means to draw us closer to God. While these practices do deepen and enrich our "vertical" relationship with God, Kyle David Bennett argues that they were originally designed to positively impact our "horizontal" relationships--with neighbors, strangers, enemies, friends, family, animals, and even the earth. Bennett explains that this "horizontal" dimension has often been overlooked or forgotten in contemporary discussions of the spiritual disciplines. This book offers an alternative way of understanding the classic spiritual disciplines that makes them relevant, doable, and meaningful for everyday Christians. Bennett shows how the disciplines are remedial practices that correct the malformed ways we do everyday things, such as think, eat, talk, own, work, and rest. Through personal anecdotes, engagement with Scripture, and vivid cultural references, he invites us to practice the spiritual disciplines wholesale and shows how changing the way we do basic human activities can bring healing, renewal, and transformation to our day-to-day lives and the world around us.

Book Synopsis The Korea & Her Neighbours by : Isabella Bird
Download or read book The Korea & Her Neighbours written by Isabella Bird and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 667 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Korea and Her Neighbours, written in two volumes between 1894 and 1897, Isabella Bird documents one of the most critical and interesting periods of Korean history. Violently torn from centuries of seclusion, this fragile nation awoke to find itself confronted on all sides by an array of powerful, ambitious, and aggressive countries clamoring for commercial and political concessions - a rivalry which, at this time, made Korea the battlefield of the first Sino-Japanese war. In the midst of political turmoil and international intrigue, the author offers an extraordinarily accurate description of almost every facet of the country covering such topics as the climate, geography, the living conditions of the people, the structure of government, indigenous religions, customs, and foreign trade treaties. Included is a chilling description of the assassination of Korea's queen, and an account of Isabella Bird's undaunted travels in Manchuria, China, and Russia, where she reported on the military tension at the Korean borders.
