Book excerpt: DISCIPLE is a program of disciplined Bible study aimed at developing strong Christian leaders. The study gives the Old and New Testaments equal time, emphasizing the wholeness of the Bible as a revelation of God. DISCIPLE draws upon the work of scholars, the personal Bible reading and study of the participant, and dynamic group discussion to aid understanding of the Bible. The first study in the program is DISCIPLE: BECOMING DISCIPLES THROUGH BIBLE STUDY, a thirty-four week overview of the entire Bible. Commitment and Time Involved Three and one-half to four hours of independent study each week (40 minutes daily for leaders and 30 minutes daily for group members) in preparation for weekly group meetings. Attendance at weekly 2.5 hour meetings. Study Manual Each member of the group needs a study manual and a Bible. The Bible is the text for the study and the study manual will guide group members in their study and preparation for the weekly group session. The study manual also includes suggestions for individual and study-related activities. Space is provided for taking notes while reading Scripture, for recording thoughts and questions arising out of daily study, and for notes during the weekly group session. The titles of the sessions along with theme words and theme verses, and major persons, events, and topics will set the sequence of the biblical story in the minds of the participants. The principal Scripture for each session follows the chronological movement of the biblical story. We recommend the New Interpreters Study Bible More Questions? Visit www.cokesbury.com/disciple.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why Another Discipleship Book?Let's face it. There are a ton of discipleship books out there on the market. Why in all of Christendom do we need another discipleship book? Let me give you a few reasons why this discipleship book is important and how it is different from any other discipleship book you will get. 1.Discipleship Is Important. - When a person reads the New Testament, discipleship is written all over it. Whether Jesus is leading his disciples, Paul is making disciples, or the church is being called to make disciples, discipleship is there. Discipleship in the New Testament is done in a small group or one-on-one, with one believer leading another to know and follow God. This book is designed to do that. This is not another Bible study or life guide. This is not a preaching series to work through. This book is a guide for one believer to lead another in order to help them know and follow God through studying the text of the Bible.2.God's Word Is Important. - When you look at all the different materials labeled as discipleship you can be overrun with options. Some formats are DVD driven, some are book driven, others are conversation-driven. But the real basis of teaching people to know and follow God is God's Word. Therefore, this resource is Text-Driven Discipleship. The guide is designed to help a disciple-maker lead their disciple to discuss and understand God's Word and to help the disciple begin to study God's Word for themselves.3.God's People Are Important. - When Christians look at the church, they should see a group of people committed to making disciples. Making disciples is the Commission of every Christian and the marching orders of the Church (Matt 28:18-20). Thus, this resource was written in order to help Christians do what they were called to do. This guide is to help God's people teach the Bible to others.

Book Synopsis Discipleship on the Edge by : Darrell W. Johnson
Download or read book Discipleship on the Edge written by Darrell W. Johnson and published by Regent College Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revelation is probably the most read, but least understood book of the Bible. History is replete with examples of how not to interpret it, and books featuring end-of-world prophecy claims based on Revelation consistently top the bestseller lists. But how can the message of such an enigmatic book be applied to our lives today? In Discipleship on the Edge, Darrell W. Johnson drives home the challenging and practical message of Revelation in thirty carefully crafted sermons. Paying careful attention to the original context of Revelation and the circumstances surrounding its composition, Johnson shows that the book is not a "crystal ball" but rather a "discipleship manual." Thoroughly researched and yet accessible, this collection of sermons is a helpful resource for pastors and small group leaders who are looking for models to help them preach and teach the message of Revelation in a time when there is much confusion about the end times. Darrell W. Johnson serves as Scholar-in-Residence at The Way Church and Canadian Church Leaders Network in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. A popular conference and retreat speaker, he has also served as the preaching pastor for a number of congregations in North America and the Philippines, as well as serving as Adjunct Professor of Preaching for the Doctor of Ministry program at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California, and a Teaching Fellow at Regent College. His other books include Experiencing the Trinity and Fifty-Seven Words That Change The World.

Book excerpt: Where have all the disciples gone? There is a missing force in Christianity today. It’s a critical one, and its absence has led to weak believers, disintegrating families, ineffective churches, and a decaying culture. Without it, we lack what we need to fully live as heaven’s representatives on earth. That missing force is discipleship. In Kingdom Disciples, Tony Evans outlines a simple, actionable definition of discipleship to help the church fulfill its calling. Readers will learn: What a disciple is What a disciple cares about How to be a disciple and make disciples What discipleship looks like in community What the impact of discipleship on the world can be Kingdom disciples are in short supply, and the result is a legion of powerless Christians attending powerless churches, having a powerless presence in the world. The power, authority, abundance, victory, and impact God has promised will only come about when we understand and align ourselves with His definition of discipleship. Kingdom Disciples calls believers and churches back to our primary, divinely ordained responsibility to be disciples and make disciples. Only when we take seriously this assignment will the world see heaven at work on earth. Will you accept the assignment? Kingdom Disciples isuseful as base material for a course on discipleship.
Book Synopsis Conversion and Discipleship by : Bill Hull
Download or read book Conversion and Discipleship written by Bill Hull and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2016-01-12 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discipleship occurs when someone answers the call to learn from Jesus how to live his or her life as though Jesus were living it. The end result is that the disciple becomes the kind of person who naturally does what Jesus did. How the church understands salvation and the gospel is the key to recovering a biblical theology of discipleship. Our doctrines of grace and salvation, in some cases, actually prevent us from creating an expectation that we are to be disciples of Jesus. A person can profess to be a Christian and yet still live under the impression that they don’t need to actually follow Jesus. Being a follower is seen as an optional add-on, not a requirement. It is a choice, not a demand. Being a Christian today has no connection with the biblical idea that we are formed into the image of Christ. In this ground-breaking new book, pastor and author Bill Hull shows why our existing models of evangelism and discipleship fail to actually produce followers of Jesus. He looks at the importance of recovering a robust view of the gospel and taking seriously the connection between conversion—answering the call to follow Jesus—and discipleship—living like the one we claim to follow.
