Book Synopsis A Discerning Eye by : Richard Offner
Download or read book A Discerning Eye written by Richard Offner and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Discerning Eye is an anthology of some of the finest and most lasting essays by a great critic-historian of Early Italian painting, Richard Offner. Its contents span the Florentine fourteenth century and thus compose a kind of portrait album of some of its most notable painters between the Gothic and Renaissance eras, from the Magdalen Master in the thirteenth century to Masaccio in the early fifteenth. Each essay contains insights that are as incisive, fresh, and evocative today as when they were first written. The essays are illustrated using Offner&’s original photographs supplemented by new or additional photographs when dictated by the material or when the reader might be better helped to see the relationship between Offner&’s analytical prose and a given image. This book reintroduces Offner and places him in the wider context of art-historical writing to reassess his work and underscore what his writings have to offer art historians working today. Three interpretive essays approach Offner from distinct but complementary perspectives: historiographical, philosophical, and biographical. Reassessments of such figures as Erwin Panofsky and Millard Meiss aid the ongoing debate about what art history is and how it ought to be practiced. The reader is asked to reconsider not merely the value but also the philosophical foundation of connoisseurship as a method of investigation and its compatibility with other methods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does it make a difference that the God Christians claim to worship has revealed himself as triune-the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit? Does this fundamental truth of biblical authority have an effect on a believer's personal fellowship with God? Puritan theologian John Owen recognized the great need for every believer to understand the triune God. Communion with the Triune God revisits the truth presented by John Owen and challenges all believers to truly recognize and appreciate the ministry that God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit have in their lives. This work of John Owen encourages Christians to enjoy true communion with each person of the triune God.

Book excerpt: A state-of-the-art professional golf course above ground; an equally state-of-the-art cemetery underneath that very same plot of land. For the first time in years, things are looking up for both the school and the entire community. But all is not as it appears to be in the quaint little village of Canterbury, nor for that matter on the hollowed grounds of St. Anselm's. Long before the golf course is ready for play, long before the "cemeterium" is ready for those in need of eternal rest, dead bodies have begun popping up. A case crying out for Detective Quentin P. Montgomery? Not exactly. Montgomery doesn't have time to track down some two-bit pretender to the throne. He's after bigger fish to fry. In fact, the biggest fish of them all. The Almighty Unsub.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communion with God, or in full, "Of communion with God the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost each person distinctly, in love, grace, and consolation; or, the saints' fellowship with the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost unfolded," is John Owen's finest devotional treatise. This work expounds "the most glorious truth that believers may have distinct communion with the three persons Father, Son, and Spirit," and being addressed to the "Christian reader" is simpler than much of Owen's theology. (Unabridged. Includes all footnotes.)
Book Synopsis Shakespeare on Theatre by : Robert Cohen
Download or read book Shakespeare on Theatre written by Robert Cohen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-09-07 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Shakespeare on Theatre, master acting teacher Robert Cohen brilliantly scrutinises Shakespeare's implicit theories of acting, paying close attention to the plays themselves and providing a wealth of fascinating historical evidence. What he finds will surprise scholars and actors alike – that Shakespeare's drama and his practice as an actor were founded on realism, though one clearly distinct from the realism later found in Stanislavski. Shakespeare on Acting is an extraordinary introduction to the way the plays articulate a profound understanding of performance and reflect the life and times of a uniquely talented theatre-maker.

Book Synopsis Trusting God's Timing by : Steven Stoffelsen
Download or read book Trusting God's Timing written by Steven Stoffelsen and published by Word Alive Press. This book was released on 2017-01-17 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many times Christians excitedly receive a promise or vision from God. From that moment forward, they want to tell the whole world what God is going to do in and through them. It’s so exciting to have a promise from God. The Bible says, “Where there is no vision, the people perish” (Proverbs 29:18). But when God gives us a promise or vision, it takes time to see it fulfilled. Rarely is the vision for tomorrow or even the next year. It’s for a certain time set by God. He shows it to you early, but He still wants to prepare you for the journey ahead. Many Christians get discouraged during this process and walk away from God. But so many people in the Bible—like Abraham, Joseph, and David—had to go through years of preparation before they saw their visions fulfilled. They waited a long time, probably longer than most of us. Be encouraged and don’t let a thing called time destroy you before you even start. God is for you, and what He’s promised He will bring to pass.
