Book Synopsis Cross-Linguistic and Cross-Cultural Perspectives on Academic Discourse by : Eija Suomela-Salmi
Download or read book Cross-Linguistic and Cross-Cultural Perspectives on Academic Discourse written by Eija Suomela-Salmi and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2009-11-19 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this volume is to examine academic discourse (AD) from cross-linguistic and cross-cultural perspectives. The adjective Cross-cultural in the volume title is not just limited to national contexts but also includes a cross-disciplinary perspective. Twelve scientific fields are under scrutiny in the articles. One of the unique aspects of the volume is the inclusion of a variety of foreign languages (English (as a lingua franca), Spanish, French, Swedish, Russian, German, Italian, and Norwegian). Besides, in several articles dealing with oral AD, comparisons and parallels are also established with written AD. The research methodologies used in the studies are varied and they offer an overview of the diversity and richness of approaches to AD. All in all, it is hoped that the volume appeals not only to young researchers but also to confirmed scholars interested in cross-linguistic and cross-cultural aspects of AD. It will also be of interest to language teachers or teachers who are involved with e.g. international students and academic mobility.

Book Synopsis Racism in and for the Welfare State by : Fabio Perocco
Download or read book Racism in and for the Welfare State written by Fabio Perocco and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-08-18 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a global overview of racism against immigrants within and in the name of the welfare state. Rich in documents and historical perspective, it analyses politics, practices, and discourses of welfare racism through the exam of discriminatory laws, measures and speeches by institutional actors, public figures, and organizations. The strength and persistence of this form of racism are due to several factors, including racism’s structural position in modern society, a colonial root of welfare state, the intrinsic limits of social rights in capitalism, and punitive migration policies. An instrument of selection, exclusion and stigmatisation, welfare racism is a distinguishing feature of anti-immigrant institutional policies, which became specially aggressive in the neoliberal era with the dismantling of the welfare state and social rights. Integrating perspectives from Belgium, Brazil, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Japan, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States, welfare racism results a global and structured phenomenon concerning world labour as a whole, producing inequalities and division in the working class.

Book Synopsis Invisible Borders by : Enrico Gargiulo
Download or read book Invisible Borders written by Enrico Gargiulo and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-02 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses residency, a form of municipal membership that plays a strategic role in administrative processes in Italy. Residency is a two-faced juridical status: a means for exercising rights and moving freely within a state territory and, at the same time, a tool of control that operates through identification and registration. Gargiulo investigates residency both historically and theoretically, showing that the status of resident is a special kind of border, namely, a status border, which draws the lines of local citizenship. By explaining that the mechanisms of exclusion from residency work as administrative barriers, and showing their aims and effects in terms of civic stratification and differential inclusion, this book contributes to the debates on local citizenship, borders, and discretionary power. ‘’While the legal concepts of (un)authorized presence and citizenship in bounded territorial states govern how we envision “immigrants” and debate their treatment, this perceptive book raises novel issues. Local residency registration, studied with rich material from Italy, regulates access to socially distributed resources, and shapes stratification of labor. The case made in this book is original, penetrating, and theoretically insightful. Scholars of migration will want to read this exceptional work.’’ — Josiah Heyman, University of Texas at El Paso, USA ‘’Enrico Gargiulo has made an important addition to our sociological understanding of the ways in which states and individuals relate to one another. The humble, often taken-for-granted status of "resident" turns out to be a major pathway to rights and privileges for individuals who have it; those without it may be legal non-persons who barely exist in the eyes of the state. This book is a major contribution to our expanding appreciation of the many kinds of borders, both physical and conceptual, that shape our relationships with the social and political world.’’ — John Torpey, Presidential Professor of Sociology and History, Director, Ralph Bunche, Institute for International Studies, CUNY Graduate Center, USA

Book Synopsis Per una seconda Carta della Democrazia del Comune di Terni by : Davide Mancini

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Borders, Migration and Globalization by : Anna Rita Calabrò
Download or read book Borders, Migration and Globalization written by Anna Rita Calabrò and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-10 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence of new and substantial human migration flows is one of the most important consequences of globalisation. While ascribable to widely differing social and economic causes, from the forced migration of refugees to upper-middle-class migration projects and the movement of highly skilled workers, what they have in common is the effect of contributing to a substantial global redefinition in terms of both identity and politics. This book contains contributions from scholars in the fields of law, social sciences, the sciences, and the liberal arts, brought together to delineate the features of the migration phenomena that will accompany us over the coming decades. The focus is on the multifaceted concept of 'border' as representing a useful stratagem for dealing with a topic like migration that requires analysis from several perspectives. The authors discuss the various factors and issues which must be understood in all their complexity so that they can be governed by all social stakeholders, free of manipulation and false consciousness. They bring an interdisciplinary and comparative perspective to the social phenomena such as human trafficking, unaccompanied foreign minors, or ethnic-based niches in the job market. The book will be a valuable guide for academics, students and policy-makers.
