Book Synopsis Determinants of Gross Human Rights Violations by State and State-sponsored Actors in Brazil, Uruguay, Chile, and Argentina, 1960-1990 by : Wolfgang S. Heinz
Download or read book Determinants of Gross Human Rights Violations by State and State-sponsored Actors in Brazil, Uruguay, Chile, and Argentina, 1960-1990 written by Wolfgang S. Heinz and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-09-27 with total page 902 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the gross human rights violations that characterized the military repression in Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay from the 1960s to the 1980s. Dr Wolfgang Heinz, the author of three of the four case studies is a German scholar. The second author, Dr Hugo Frühling, is a Chilean researcher. Both are renowned human rights specialists who have done in-depth research on the causes of gross human rights violations in these countries. They have interviewed generals and officers directly involved in the repression. They have unearthed secret documents and, building on existing scholarship, they have managed to draw a unique picture of the mechanisms of repressive domestic social control. They have investigated international factors as well as the dynamics of the interaction between guerrilleros and urban terrorists on the one hand, and the military, the police forces and the death squads on the other. The result is a comprehensive volume, broad and comparative in scope, and written with clinical detachment but also with humanitarian sympathy for the victims of repression.

Book Synopsis Human Rights by : Arthur V. Carrington
Download or read book Human Rights written by Arthur V. Carrington and published by Nova Biomedical Books. This book was released on 2000 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To the consternation of the haves, some humans continue to insist that they are entitled to live as humans. While it is perhaps a question of philosophy what constitutes a human right, it is more clear what constitutes an abuse of human rights. The world has never been short on abusers and is surely not now. Only the names and faces have changed over time. The powerful tend to be the abusers and the weak the abused. Being aware of the abuses can at least focus light on them and perhaps serve as a proactive response. This bibliography presents hundreds of citations of human right violations under the categories: Basic Human Rights; North America; Latin America; Europe; Asia; Middle East and Africa. Access is provided via Title, Author and Subject Indexes.

Book Synopsis Free Speech: A Very Short Introduction by : Nigel Warburton
Download or read book Free Speech: A Very Short Introduction written by Nigel Warburton and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-02-26 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it' This slogan, attributed to Voltaire, is frequently quoted by defenders of free speech. Yet it is rare to find anyone prepared to defend all expression in every circumstance, especially if the views expressed incite violence. So where do the limits lie? What is the real value of free speech? Here, Nigel Warburton offers a concise guide to important questions facing modern society about the value and limits of free speech: Where should a civilized society draw the line? Should we be free to offend other people's religion? Are there good grounds for censoring pornography? Has the Internet changed everything? This Very Short Introduction is a thought-provoking, accessible, and up-to-date examination of the liberal assumption that free speech is worth preserving at any cost. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

Book Synopsis Moral Opposition to Authoritarian Rule in Chile, 1973-90 by : P. Lowden
Download or read book Moral Opposition to Authoritarian Rule in Chile, 1973-90 written by P. Lowden and published by Springer. This book was released on 1995-12-17 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines the political importance of moral opposition to authoritarian rule in Chile, 1973-90, as a challenge to the government's systematic human rights' violations. It was initially led by the Catholic Church, whose primate founded an organisation to defend human rights: the Vicariate of Solidarity (1976-92). The book assesses the impact of moral opposition as a force for redemocratisation by tracing the history and achievements of the Vicariate. It also argues that such moral matters are often underestimated in regime transition analysis.
