Book excerpt: The Routledge Companion to Migration, Communication and Politics brings together academics from numerous disciplines to show the legal, political, communicative, theoretical, methodological, and media implications of migration. The collection makes the compelling case that migration does not occur in a vacuum; rather, it is driven by and reacts to various factors, including the political, economic, and cultural worlds in which individuals live. The 25 chapters reveal the complex nature of migration from various angles, not only looking at how policy affects migrants but also how individuals and marginalized groups are impacted by such acts. In Part I contributors examine migration law, debating the role of the state in managing migration flows and investigating existing migration policy. Part II offers theories and methods that integrate communication studies, political science, and law into the study of migration, including cultural fusion theory and Gebserian theory. Part III looks at how contemporary perceptions of migration and migrants intersect with media representations across media outlets worldwide. Finally, Part IV offers case studies that present the intricacies of migration within different cultural, national, and political groups. Migration is the key political, economic, and cultural issue of our time and this companion takes the next step in the debate; namely, the effects of the how, in addition to the how and why. Researchers and students of communication, politics, media, and law will find this an invaluable intervention.

Book excerpt: Abortion and Democracy offers critical analyses of abortion politics in Latin America’s Southern Cone, with lessons and insights of wider significance. Drawing on the region’s recent history of military dictatorship and democratic transition, this edited volume explores how abortion rights demands fit with current democratic agendas. With a focus on Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay, the book’s contributors delve into the complex reality of abortion through the examination of the discourses, strategies, successes, and challenges of abortion rights movements. Assembling a multiplicity of voices and experiences, the contributions illuminate key dimensions of abortion rights struggles: health aspects, litigation efforts, legislative debates, party politics, digital strategies, grassroots mobilization, coalition-building, affective and artistic components, and movement-countermovement dynamics. The book takes an approach that is sensitive to social inequalities and to the transnational aspects of abortion rights struggles in each country. It bridges different scales of analysis, from abortion experiences at the micro level of the clinic or the home to the macro sociopolitical and cultural forces that shape individual lives. This is an important intervention suitable for students and scholars of abortion politics, democracy in Latin America, gender and sexuality, and women’s rights.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reflecting on some of Brazil's foremost challenges, this book considers the porous relationship between legality and illegality in a country that presages political and societal changes in hitherto unprecedented dimensions. It brings together work by established scholars from Brazil, Europe and the United States to think through how (il)legalities are produced and represented at the level of institutions, (daily) practice and culture. Through a transdisciplinary approach, the chapters cover issues including informal work practices (e.g. street vendors), urban squatter movements and migration. Alongside social practices, the volume features close analyses of cultural practices and cultural production, including migrant literature, punk music and indigenous art. The question of (il)legalities resonates beyond Brazil's borders, as concepts such as "lawfare" have crept into vocabularies, and countries the world over grapple with issues like state interference, fake news and the definition of "illegal" migration. This is valuable reading for scholars in Brazilian and Latin American Studies, as well as those working in literary and cultural studies, anthropology, sociology, geography and political science.

Book excerpt: Urban Claims and the Right to the City explores how contested processes of urban development, and the rights of city dwellers, are understood and interpreted from the perspective of women and men working, in different ways, at the grassroots in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil, and London, UK. In doing so, it represents the grounded voices of authors whose work and lives mean that they engage, on a daily basis, with issues related to housing and spatial rights, and identity struggles around race, gender, disability, sexuality, citizenship and class. Book excerpt: This book critically examines the contemporary discourses on the nature of 'human rights', their histories, the myths that are embedded in them, and contributes an alternative reading of those histories by placing the concerns and interests of the 'people in struggle and communities of resistance' at centre stage. The work analyses the significance of the United Nations (UN) and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and goes on to study the more contemporary issues such as women's struggle to feminize the understanding and practice of human rights, the postmodernist critique of the universal idiom of human rights and, most pertinently for the current world scene, it analyses the impact of globalization on the human rights movement. The volume includes a discussion on the proposed UN norms regarding the human rights responsibilities of multinational corporations and other business entities.

This book was released on 2018-09-18 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, which I am pleased to preface, is divided into two parts of great relevance to contemporary feminist studies, especially to the peripheral countries of the capitalist world. In it lie essays that I divide into two categories. On the one hand, we have articles that address structural issues involving human rights and, in particular, women’s rights. These are the texts that discuss the way in which the subject of human rights, in the contexts of the regional economic communities, are inserted; there are also the texts that address the bankruptcy of the patriarchal political system regarding the political representation of women in countries like India and Brazil; and the chapter in which the authors reflect on the need for an international feminist normative that breaks with the predominantly male discourse in international law, which disregards feminist proposals for normalization. The other part of the book covers varied subjects that connect with the feminist agenda and gender studies as well as contemporary identity processes. These are studies on the reproductive rights of women; sexual and domestic violence against women; environmental degradation and its relation to the patriarchal model to the detriment of traditional cultures; the immigration of women for marriage as a conscious choice; mental health and its relation to gender issues. Chapters: 1. REGIONAL ECONOMIC COMMUNITIES IN HUMAN AND WOMEN´S RIGHTS PROTECTION 2. WOMEN REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS: A REFLECTION ABOUT INTERNATIONAL PROTECTION OF HUMAN RIGHTS 3. WOMEN AND MENTAL HEALTH: A STUDY ON ADOLESCENCY AND GENDER IN BRAZIL 4. A PROGRAM TO COMBAT HARASSMENT AGAINST WOMEN: CONSIDERATION FOR IMPLEMENTATION AT THE UNIVERSITY 5. DOMESTIC AND FAMILY VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN IN BRAZIL: IS THERE LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL? 6. ENVIRONMENTAL PATRIARCHY AND INDIGENOUS WOMEN: FROM INVISIBILITY TO RESISTANCE 7. MARRIAGE EMIGRATION OF WOMEN FROM RUSSIA 8. RESERVATIONS, INTERSECTIONALITY, AND WOMEN’S REPRESENTATION IN INDIAN POLITICS 9. FIGHTING AGAINST GENDER INEQUALITY IN PARLIAMENT: CHALLENGES AND PERSPECTIVES FROM THE BRAZILIAN CASE 10. BUILDING UP AN INTERNATIONAL FEMINIST LAW
