Book excerpt: Excerpt from Directory of Community Activities While great care has been used in grouping organizations accord ing to their aims, it should be understood that the grouping is not a classification. It was necessary to use some scheme of grouping and the arrangement adopted was believed simplest and most logical, though by no means the only one possible. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Community Center Chapters I to V deal with some of the more fundamental principles underlying the community center movement as related to rural life conditions. Chapters VI to X are intended to indicate the nature and the scope of com munity center activities and, partly by discussion and partly by illustration, to offer some suggestions for carry ing on the community center work. Chapters XI and XII contain a number of programs which may be found suggestive to teachers or other community leaders in making definite plans for the meetings. Chapter XI deals with entertainment programs, while Chapter XII suggests programs bearing upon country life. But since these two kinds of program may be used interchangeably, the reader would do well in actual practice to regard these two chapters as one. In reading a book of this kind, one is apt to read the chapter first and then give more or less casual attention to the exercises at the end of the chapter. This method of reading might be improved by first examining the exercises as a guide to the reading. It is believed that the use of the book for reading circle purposes may be made most helpful by the latter method. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gaffney City Directory, 1921-1922, Vol. 1: Containing a General Alphabetical List of Names, a Classified Business Directory, a Street Directory and Much Useful Miscellaneous Information The business world has awakened to the realization of this need; and there are few towns of any consequence that do not have a City Directory. It is an old saying that you can judge a man by the clothes he wears - whether this be true or not matters. Little; we all know that it is generally done; often no doubt to the disadvantage of some one. But just as much as man is judged by his clothes, just so much is the business life and activities of a town or community judged by its Directory; because the Directory is the most com plete and the only recognized standard book of reference regard ing the citizens of a community, their address, occupation or kind of business in which they are engaged. When you consult a Directory of a town, you can easily determine if it is up to the standard, and if you find it to be well patronized, you need not; b told that you are in a live community - the fact is self-evident. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War-Time Agencies of the Churches: Directory and Handbook The handbook which follows gives a brief record of the war activities of the different denominational and interchurch agencies engaged in war work. It is an attempt to bring together in a single volume, information as to the war work of the Christian Church not otherwise readily accessible. While necessarily confining itself to agencies of an official character, denominational and interdenominational, and leaving for a later volume the more complete interpretation of the war work of the Church as a whole, it is hoped that it may serve a useful purpose by showing how the Churches severally and in cooperation met the new responsibilities and opportunities of service created by the war. The organizations whose work is here described are primarily those which have cooperated in the General War-Time Commission of the Churches. For purposes of completeness, however, a brief record has been included of the war work of other religious bodies which have functioned through war commissions or war organizations. Agencies of a more philanthropic nature, such as the Red Cross and the War Camp Community Service, have not been included, although no story of the Church's activity would be complete which did not include the record of what its members have done in and through these agencies.
