The first purpose in offering to teachers an outline of the course of study in geography along with suggestions and directions for teaching, is to put before them a richer field of material, to enlarge their resources, and to remove limitations rather than place them upon teachers. No teacher can do successful work who is confined to the text book in hand. The process of education is a process of "continued reconstruction of an individual's experience", and the means - the materials in the hands of the teacher - are not to be found in text books, not even inside the school room. That teacher is most successful in the disposition of her subject-matter, who, systematically and sympathetically, reaches into the outside world of life, gathers up its related interests, and focuses them upon the growing child. With this in view, the true "course of study" is in the great outside world of fact and interest concerning nature and man, and the true teacher is to select and organize her materials from the complexity of phenomena and life about her, from the sky over her head, from the air she breathes, the ground on which she walks, from the people with whom she talks, the books she reads, and so on. The course of study as herein outlined and developed is only suggestive with the hope that it may be an aid to the teacher in selecting and organizing her material, and in presenting the same to the children. II. A second purpose must inevitably follow as a consequence, - an enrichment of the so-called course of study. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Vocational Survey of Minneapolis, 1913 A year ago a group of men and women interested in the welfare of boys and girls, and somewhat acquainted with conditions that confront them upon their entrance into industrial life, decided that it was time to make a survey of the city. There had been much talk of training for the trades in the public schools; and apparently there was reasonable ground for this advocacy. Moreover, the Civic and Commerce Association reported at the time of the "Made in Minneapolis" display that 40,000 persons were now engaged in manufacture in this city. This was not at wide variance with the general statistics of the 1910 census, which shows that our national population has increased 21%, but indicates a phenomenal figure for the growth of manufacture: an increase of 40.3% in those engaged in making things. It would be near the truth to say that about 40% of those in gainful occupations in Minneapolis are in manufacture and mechanical pursuits, and nearly the same number in trade and transportation. It was further evident from statistics that the skilled craftsmen of this city were divided among natives and foreign born in the ratio of one to six, and it was also clear that the intelligent classes from Northern Europe, - the Germans, Scandinavians, and English, - were not crossing the ocean to find here their future homes. Southeastern Europe was being emptied of its ignorant population, accustomed to a standard of life little better than that of the cattle with which they housed. These people had lived in a far-away industrial epoch, where implements were yet primitive and modern trades and machines unknown. It was absurd to look to these people to find trained workers to take the places of the five per cent who for one reason or another leave the ranks of skilled artisans every year or to find the other three per cent needed to do the added work of a rapidly growing community. What more natural than to turn to the public schools and ask of them a supply of skill? So here, as in most cities, there was much talk of trade training in our schools, and a rather aggressive insistence that this new work be undertaken. Was there a real demand? or was this a new educational fad sweeping across the country, to be lost in the great abyss of educational nostrums, along with vertical writing and basketry? It is fitting that acknowledgment be made first to Mr. Frank J. Bruno, General Secretary of the Minneapolis Associated Charities, who conceived the idea that such a survey be undertaken. To him, and, in as full measure, to Dr. Arthur J. Todd, Professor of Sociology at the University of Minnesota, I am indebted for encouragement and counsel in the development of the work. The Department of School Attendance, under the directorship of Mr. David H. Holbrook, was of great service in the collection of data. This department not only made accessible files and registers, and lent its name to printed circulars of inquiry, but also showed a very ready appreciation of the function of such work. Sincere thanks are due Superintendent B. B. Jackson whose letter of introduction acted as an "open sesame" to the schools. The principals of the four schools - Miss Kate Allen of the Holland, Mr. Ernest J. Hardaker of the Logan, Miss Irene Joslin of the Lyndale, and Miss Maria A. Lynch of the Washington - gave many minutes of their valuable time, enabling me to make the respective statistics more accurate. Our schools are mines of material which by the researcher's perseverance and skill must be fused into a useful product. Individual experience isolated may mean little; individual experience, amassed, arranged, interpreted, becomes history upon which the future may be builded. It is indeed a source of gratification when the officials of our schools appreciate this. I am grateful to Miss Jean E. Hirsch of the Medical Art Shop at the University of Minnesota for giving her time and skill to the execution of the figures. The aim of the study has been to establish a definite relationship between dependency and retardation. It is hoped that in the future some one may make this complete and more valuable, first by determining how many dependent children there are in the Minneapolis Public Schools, and secondly by discovering those causes coexistent with dependency which are retarding the child. This work is, therefore, but the first of three steps. Moreover, it is an attempt in a field, at present, almost unentered by the research worker, and for that reason does not pretend to be other than a simple statement of facts.
