This book examines the latest cycle of war films to reveal how they mediate and negotiate the complexities of war, class, and a military-political mission largely gone bad.

Book excerpt: While the number of vector-borne diseases and their incidence in Europe is much less than in tropical and/or developing countries, there are nevertheless a substantial number of such infections in Europe. The most important one is the zoonotic arbovirus infection Tick-Borne Encephalitis (TBE), a virus transmitted to humans by ticks or by consumption of unpasteurized dairy products from infected cows, goats, or sheep. TBE is endemic in the non-tropical Eurasian forest belt with most cases occurring in Russia and in central and eastern parts of Europe. In endemic areas, TBE is one of the most important causes of viral meningitis/encephalitis and a major public health concern. Moreover, TBE is becoming more and more frequent in Europe due to the appearance of new endemic areas and increasing awareness. However, it might be difficult to diagnose TBE, because clinical manifestations tend to be relatively nonspecific. Although a standardized case definition across the European Union has existed now for a few years, national implementation of TBE programs, including regular screening and diagnosis, are done in only very few countries. Therefore, wide differences in the intensity and quality of national surveillance of TBE cases still exist, and the true burden of disease and the areas with circulation of the TBE viral subtypes in Europe and Asia are not fully known. Moreover, although safe and effective vaccines are available, vaccination uptake in most endemic countries is too low to reduce the TBE burden significantly. The authors of “The TBE Book’ therefore have tried to compile in this “working book” the most recent and relevant aspects of TBE.

These gifted artists are divided into several classifications: Idealists (Art Babbitt, John Hubley); Mavericks (John Kricfalusi, Terry Gilliam); Technicians (Max and Dave Fleischer); Influencers (Frank Tashlin, Matt Groening, Ray Harryhausen, Ed Benedict); Trailblazers (Lotte Rieniger, Lillian Friedman); Teller of Tales (Henry Selick); Teachers (George Newall, Tom Yohe, the FMPU); and Storytellers (Joe Grant, Bill Scott, Michael Maltese). A selective list of each animator's key films and awards is included.

Book excerpt: "The new twentieth-century world, heralded by the advent of sophisticated weapons systems and uneasy superpowers, calls for a new twentieth-century diplomacy, writes Stephen D. Kertesz in THE QUEST FOR PEACE THROUGH DIPLOMACY. After analyzing the past successes and failures of diplomacy in dealing with major international crises ranging from the rise of self-seeking nation-states in the fifteenth century to the rise of nuclear powers in the twentieth, Kertesz focuses closely on a new form of diplomacy - the use of large multi-national organizations, such as the United Nations, whose major task is to keep the globe from splitting asunder. The only world community that exists today is a community of fear in the face of possible thermonuclear annihilation, observes the author. Yet there are unique opportunities for achieving cooperation through regional organizations such as the European Economic Community, he maintains, and even the possibility of a future expansion of the present Atlantic partnership into a new political community that would include an Atlantic Assembly, an Atlantic Political Authority, and an Atlantic system of international courts. However discouraging the historical difficulties and current frustrations, we must not neglect these opportunities to adapt our traditional techniques of diplomacy and international relations to the demands of a rapidly changing world, Kertesz maintains. For in the treacherous closing decades of the twientieth century the quest for peace and the quest for survival have become one." - Publisher.

His integrity, passion, and commitment to excellence earned the praise of colleagues on both sides of the aisle. Miller often attributed his successes to the value of his formative experience in the Marine Corps as a young man. In his writing and stump speeches, he stated, “In the twelve weeks of hell and transformation that were Marine Corps boot camp, I learned the values of achieving a successful life that have guided and sustained me on the course which, although sometimes checkered and detoured, I have followed ever since.” In Corps Values Miller recounts his life and the simple but powerful lessons he learned in the U.S. Marines: the core values he feels we must embrace if we are to be successful as individuals and as a nation. Only by incorporating such time-honored Marine qualities as pride, discipline, courage, and respect into our personal and professional lives can we meet the challenges that lie ahead. With Corps Values Miller urges us all to go back to “basic training” to reinforce the values that ultimately lead to success in any endeavor.
