Book excerpt: This book is the record of papers presented at the Conference on Directions in Decentralized Control, Many-Person Optimization, and Large-Scale Systems held at the Colonial Hilton Inn, Wakefield, Massachusetts from September 1-3, 1975. Our motivation for organizing such a conference was two fold. Firstly, the last few years have seen a great deal of activity in the field of Large-Scale Systems Theory and it has been certainly one of the dominant themes of research in the disciplines of Systems and Control Theory. It therefore seemed appropriate to try and take stock of what had been accomplished and also try to "invent"l the future directions of research in this field. Secondly, the 6th World IFAC Conference was being held in Cambridge, Massachusetts the week earlier and it provided an ideal opportunity for taking advantage of the presence of a large number of specialists from all parts of the world to organize a small conference where a free exchange of ideas could take place. It is left to the readers of this volume to judge to what extent we have been successful in our above mentioned goals. There is no accepted definition of what constitutes a "large scale system" nor what large-scale system theory is. While this diversity does suggest that the field {whatever it may turn out to be} is in a state of flux, it does not necessarily imply chaos.

Book excerpt: Model Management and Analytics for Large Scale Systems covers the use of models and related artefacts (such as metamodels and model transformations) as central elements for tackling the complexity of building systems and managing data. With their increased use across diverse settings, the complexity, size, multiplicity and variety of those artefacts has increased. Originally developed for software engineering, these approaches can now be used to simplify the analytics of large-scale models and automate complex data analysis processes. Those in the field of data science will gain novel insights on the topic of model analytics that go beyond both model-based development and data analytics. This book is aimed at both researchers and practitioners who are interested in model-based development and the analytics of large-scale models, ranging from big data management and analytics, to enterprise domains. The book could also be used in graduate courses on model development, data analytics and data management. - Identifies key problems and offers solution approaches and tools that have been developed or are necessary for model management and analytics - Explores basic theory and background, current research topics, related challenges and the research directions for model management and analytics - Provides a complete overview of model management and analytics frameworks, the different types of analytics (descriptive, diagnostics, predictive and prescriptive), the required modelling and method steps, and important future directions

But as I.T. becomes integrated into all aspects of society, the need for research is even greater. And the range of issues that need to be addressed is broader than ever. This new book highlights the fundamental importance of research to ensure that I.T. meets society's expanding needs. Against the background of dramatic change in the I.T. landscape, the committee examines four key questions: Is the scope of I.T. research broad enough-particularly in the arena of large-scale systems-to address government, business, and social applications? Are government and industrial sponsors providing sufficient funding for I.T. research? Is the research net big both big and diverse enough to capture sufficient financial and intellectual resources to advance the field? Are structures and mechanisms for funding and conducting research suited to the new sets of research challenges?

Book excerpt: Thepastthree decadeshaveseenrapiddevelopmentin the areaofmodelpred- tive control with respect to both theoretical and application aspects. Over these 30 years, model predictive control for linear systems has been widely applied, especially in the area of process control. However, today’s applications often require driving the process over a wide region and close to the boundaries of - erability, while satisfying constraints and achieving near-optimal performance. Consequently, the application of linear control methods does not always lead to satisfactory performance, and here nonlinear methods must be employed. This is one of the reasons why nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) has - joyed signi?cant attention over the past years, with a number of recent advances on both the theoretical and application frontier. Additionally, the widespread availability and steadily increasing power of today’s computers, as well as the development of specially tailored numerical solution methods for NMPC, bring thepracticalapplicabilityofNMPCwithinreachevenforveryfastsystems. This has led to a series of new, exciting developments, along with new challenges in the area of NMPC.

Since many methods in "Big Data" fields rely on solving large-scale optimization problems, often in distributed fashion, this topic has over the last decade emerged to become very important. As well as specific coverage of this active research field, the book serves as a powerful source of information for practitioners as well as theoreticians. Large-Scale and Distributed Optimization is a unique combination of contributions from leading experts in the field, who were speakers at the LCCC Focus Period on Large-Scale and Distributed Optimization, held in Lund, 14th–16th June 2017. A source of information and innovative ideas for current and future research, this book will appeal to researchers, academics, and students who are interested in large-scale optimization.

Book excerpt: Complexity and dynamic order of controlled engineering systems is constantly increasing. Complex large scale systems (where "large" reflects the system’s order and not necessarily its physical size) appear in many engineering fields, such as micro-electromechanics, manufacturing, aerospace, civil engineering and power engineering. Modeling of these systems often result in very high-order models imposing great challenges to the analysis, design and control problems. "Efficient Modeling and Control of Large-Scale Systems" compiles state-of-the-art contributions on recent analytical and computational methods for addressing model reduction, performance analysis and feedback control design for such systems. Also addressed at length are new theoretical developments, novel computational approaches and illustrative applications to various fields, along with: - An interdisciplinary focus emphasizing methods and approaches that can be commonly applied in various engineering fields -Examinations of applications in various fields including micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS), manufacturing processes, power networks, traffic control "Efficient Modeling and Control of Large-Scale Systems" is an ideal volume for engineers and researchers working in the fields of control and dynamic systems.

These papers have been contributed to a symposium organized to celebrate Sanjoy K. Mitter's 65th birthday. The following research topics are addressed: distributed parameter systems, stochastic control, filtering and estimation, optimization and optimal control, image processing and vision, hierarchical systems and hybrid control, nonlinear systems, and linear systems. Also included are three survey papers on optimization, nonlinear filtering, and nonlinear systems. Recent advances are reported on the behavioral approach to systems, the relationship between differential games and robust control, estimation of diffusion processes, Markov processes, optimal control, hybrid control, stochastic control, spectral estimation, nonconvex quadratic programming, robust control, control algorithms and quantized linear systems. Innovative explorations are carried out on quantum systems from a control theory perspective, option valuation and hedging, three-dimensional medical visualization, computational structure biology image processing, and hierarchical approaches to complex systems, flow control, scheduling and force feedback in fluid mechanics. The contents reflect on past research accomplishments, current research activity, and future research directions in systems and control theory.

Special attention is given to the behavioral relationships among scientists and engineers, business and technical managers, sponsor organizations and their contractors, business and government officials, and line and functional managers. The descriptions of problems of technical organization and performance motivation are based primarily on an extended field study of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Managing Large Systems includes a description of the unique management system developed by NASA under the leadership of James Webb that many believe was responsible for their extraordinary technological achievements that culminated in the first moon landing. Parallels are drawn to other large-scale technology programs in aerospace and atomic energy. The authors find traditional managerial principles regarding controls, incentive systems, and planning to be inadequate in the context of large systems. They look to organizational clusters to manage future projects in advanced technological areas and in public sectors such as urban development, massive medical programs, and ecological improvements.
