This book was released on 1922 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author--after twenty years of close contact with secondary education as a teacher, high school principal, and director of training schools--has modified materially his own ideas concerning the function of the American high school. Out of administrative experiences has come the firm conviction that the high schools of this country will in time become really Americanized. Believing that democratic citizenship can not be developed in secondary schools under the Prussian lock-step administration, and believing that intellectual life can not be developed under the academic traditions that have made "lesson getting" a fetish, the writer has ventured to present this discussion, with the hope that the point of view may be helpful in stimulating teachers, principals, and educators in general to think more intensely about the problems of secondary teaching.

Excerpt: ... chapter n administration of directing study A New Point of View.--Supervised study has become a familiar term in recent discussions of highschool education. The literature of method is replete with contributions on the various phases of teaching pupils how to study. "Directing Activity," conceived as a means of developing a new general method, is the real title of this presentation. "Directing Study" is a compromise title that will serve to emphasize the fact that the effort here is to present a working basis for a more productive classroom procedure than that which usually obtains under the recitation system. Supervised study is too narrowly interpreted to serve this purpose. One of the most hopeful departures in these discussions is the evident tendency to formulate methods of teaching upon a study of the learningprocesses of children. The conventional emphasis has been upon the requirements of the logical organization of subjectmatter, irrespective of the subjective interests and experiences of the learner. Suggestive experiments have been made, the results of which are illuminating and have already begun to influence educational practice. As an example of the effect of this type of analysis and experimentation it is interesting to note the increasing disfavor in which the term recitation is held. Hearing lessons recited is coming to be considered stupid, mechanical, deadly x business. Home study, for the most part, is a myth in so far as those pupils who need it most are concerned. The practice of assigning lessons in a perfunctory manner with the expectation that somehow the lessons will be mastered is the corollary of the recitation system which has been perpetuated in the American school under the inertia of tradition. Supervised...

Several legislations and laws have been reformed to improve ways to implement the improvement plans in our school system. Looking back at the anatomy of our education system in the last fifty years brings up very few solutions as to what direction is righteously affordable for the next generation. Whether you talk about equality of education or legislation for the common standards for K12, what really matters is how well our next generation of youth is ready for the twenty-first-century workforce and/or college pathways. This book was written on behalf of students, teachers, and parents, who lack the understanding, guidance, stability, and hope in the twenty-first-century educational system. This is a system of turmoil. We have seen changes over the last fifty years, yet millions of students from elementary to freshmen year in college are suffering academically. Many are failing, and few are making the grade. Our nation ranks below the top 20 worldwide in math and science, and we are not moving fast enough to change it. It is very important to note that students of all ages can benefit from this book to improve their education and get the much-needed support academically through counseling and mentoring. Parents and students need advisement. Students need to know what tools are available to succeed in their academic affairs, and parents need to know if those tools are adequate. Education is the key for success, and perseverance unlocks the door. This book opens the door to a rewarding career and best decision making for a prosperous future and allows students to grasp a better understanding of what it means to be educated. This book gives the essence of where we were and where we are headed. Many students dont know how to study and lack the understanding of why reading is important. Millions of students come to school with raw minds and starving brains. This book looks at the mind of a teenager and the brain. In this book, youll learn about proper nutrition that will enhance the mind and spark the thinking cells. As you read this guide, you will learn more and more answers to readiness for the twenty-first-century workplace and the needed skills to succeed. Anatomy of a Model Student dares to speak out on whats wrong with todays youth and behavior issues that hinder learning. This book is the bible of educational fitness for parents and educators alike. It will empower, encourage, and mesmerize its readers, so please read it to be wise, practice it to be educated.
Book Synopsis Improving the Odds by : Thomas Del Prete
Download or read book Improving the Odds written by Thomas Del Prete and published by Teachers College Press. This book was released on 2015-04-24 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A much-needed counterpoint to the sweeping rhetoric of reform, this important book offers a nuanced depiction of the challenges and possibilities at the school and classroom level. Through the experiences of urban high school teachers who partner with their local university, Del Prete provides unique insight into teaching and learning in the midst of reform. He effectively illustrates why focusing on teaching practice and school cultures—more than standards and accountability—is a more fruitful way to achieve real and lasting change. With powerful portraits from classrooms serving diverse and low-income students, this book: Depicts the daily concerns and small victories of teachers determined to support all students in meaningful learning, and prepare them for postsecondary education. Characterizes the importance of a coherent school learning culture, based on one of the most effective small urban schools in the country. Illustrates the potential of university-school partnerships to support the development of teaching practices that will help close the achievement gap. Thomas Del Preteis Director of the Jacob Hiatt Center for Urban Education, and Chair of the Education Department at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts. He has worked for more than two decades on teacher education, university-school partnership, and school reform. “Tom Del Prete presents a fascinating case study of teachers at three high schools that really get it right when it comes to engaging all students in challenging content and higher-order thinking. In the process, he makes a compelling argument for creating high school–college partnerships that lead to a ‘culture of learning’ that engages teachers and improves student performance dramatically.” —David Conley, CEO, Educational Policy Improvement Center, Director, Center for Educational Policy Research, and Professor, University of Oregon "School-University collaboration is a phrase far easier to roll trippingly off one's tongue than it is to accomplish with effectiveness and integrity. In this fine volume, we read an account that rings true and can guide others hoping to pull off similar difficult collaborations. It is a book well worth reading and deserves to be studied with care.” —Lee S. Shulman, President Emeritus, The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching "Del Prete provides a richly detailed account of how a team of teachers grows and nurtures a collectively built body of knowledge and practice that enables them to achieve remarkable results—year after year—with students from one of the lowest income urban communities in the state. If you want to know why we need to build a collaborative learning culture in schools, read this book. If you want to know how to do it, read it again." —Tom Carroll, President, National Commission on Teaching and America’s Future (NCTAF) "Del Prete has written a book that describes what it means to prepare for and teach in an urban high school setting. At the same time, he masterfully weaves the contexts of policy, content area, and school culture into a compelling story that outlines what high-quality teaching should look like." —Lee Teitel, Harvard University Graduate School of Education
