The greatest strides forward have occurred in the field of advanced materials with high performance, such as ceramics, composite materials, and intermetallic compounds. The Sixth International Conference on Mechanical Behaviour of Materials (ICM-6), taking place in Kyoto, Japan, 29 July - 2 August 1991 addressed these issues. In commemorating the fortieth anniversary of the Japan Society of Materials Science, organised by the Foundation for Advancement of International Science and supported by the Science Council of Japan, the information provided in these proceedings reflects the international nature of the meeting. It provides a valuable account of recent developments and problems in the field of mechanical behaviour of materials.

A grain-oriented silicon iron was used as a testing material and it was found that a nearly plane-strain state could be realized up to the specimen surface by selection of the loading axis to the specific orientation of the material. From the sequential observations of crack opening and closure behavior the mechanism of fatigue crack propagation by Mode I opening was confirmed to be an alternating slipping-off process at the crack-tip apex.

Book excerpt: Fatigue striation spacings have been measured on DTD 5050 test pieces that had been tested at stress ratios of 0.05 and 0.65. Crack growth rate curves were obtained from these measurements and compared with those produced by the direct measurement of crack length as seen on the specimen surface. The aim was to establish what errors in the general growth rate might be expected from the fractographic method. The use of cellulose-acetate-carbon two stage replication gave consistently low growth rates whereas the scanning electron microscope gave good agreement with the direct method up to rates of 0.6 micrometers/cycle. Above this rate striation measurements underestimate because of the contribution of local tensile tearing.

Book excerpt: This work investigates fatigue crack growth at multiple scales and links material deformation to microstructural properties. The optical technique of digital image correlation (DIC) is well suited for this task since it provides quantitative full-field deformation measurements at multiple length scales. The first part of this work introduces two DIC-based techniques for measuring fatigue crack closure levels and demonstrates them on titanium. At the macroscale, a least squares regression was performed on full field measurements of displacement near the crack tip. At the microscale, two-point virtual extensometers were placed on the crack flanks behind the crack tip. These two measurement techniques provided crack closure level measurements from multiple scales that were consistent with one another. In the second part of this work, fatigue crack growth was observed in a nickel based superalloy, Hastelloy X, at the grain level. A novel high resolution ex situ DIC technique was developed and used to measure accumulated strain fields in the plastic wake of a fatigue crack. Additionally, the evolution of the strain field as the fatigue crack grew through the imaging region was captured using an in situ real time DIC technique. Finally, these strain fields (from both ex situ and in situ measurements) were related to microstructural geometry and orientation obtained through electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). By linking accumulated fatigue strain to microstructure, a deeper understanding of fatigue crack growth was obtained. Plastic deformation in fatigue crack growth was found to follow lobes of high strain that emanate from the crack tip at angles of 45°. These lobes leave behind an inhomogeneous strain field in which slip bands and strain localizations on grain boundaries were observed. Fatigue crack growth was observed to be transgranular following lines of slip bands as dictated by global loading and local microstructure.

Book excerpt: Direct observations of the surface crack opening displacement (SCOD) of surface and corner fatigue cracks were made on samples of Ti-6Al-4V under both cyclic and static loading conditions. The experiments were conducted in situ in a scanning electron microscope. Results show that surface residual stresses can significantly affect crack opening behavior--thus crack growth behavior--even when the crack has grown well beyond the zone of residual stress. An analytical approach was developed and used to predict SCOD for Mode I part-through cracks based on crack geometry and the boundary integral technique. Correlation with independent results for macrocracks and values for microcracks measured in this program are excellent for the case of zero residual stress. The analytical approach is currently being extended to more accurately account for the presence of residual stress gradients.

Book excerpt: It is pointed out that high internal stress, commonly regarded as necessary for initiating fracture by unidirectional deformation of a metal, does not seem essential to crack initiation by cyclic deformation of fatigue. An alternative whereby fatigue cracking can be started simply by the geometry of slip movement is generalized. The hypothesis was tested by the recently developed scanning electron-microscope for copper and aluminum specimens subjected to large amplitudes of cyclic strain (torsion), which gives a generalized type of slip movement. This technique in broadly confirming the hypothesis brings out striking forms of initial fatigue damage. (Author).

Book excerpt: In the Very High Cycle Fatigue regime (fatigue lives longer than 1e7 cycles), fatigue cracks tend to initiate internally. This makes visual detection impossible during maintenance operations. Consequently, engineers need robust fatigue datasets to prevent such internal crack initiations that may lead to the fracture of a critical part. To obtain such data, in-situ experimental techniques are developed. In particular, micro-computed tomography allows to acquire direct images of internal fatigue cracks. In this study, a combination of in-situ micro-tomography and ultrasonic fatigue cycling has been applied to specimens that contain an internal sharp notch to study the propagation of internal fatigue cracks. More precisely, the crack shape of internal fatigue cracks has been monitored in 3D at different instants of their propagation up to the Very High Cycle Fatigue regime. Some internal notches have been linked to the specimen surface given access to the ambient atmosphere. This was done to study the influence of the environment on internal fatigue cracks. This experimental procedure allowed to acquire for the first time, in-situ observations of internal fatigue cracks propagating with and without air in a Ti64 alloy. Temperature measurements were also carried out to evaluate the effect of the environment on the plasticity at the crack tip. Finally, the fatigue data obtained at ultrasonic frequencies allowed to evaluate the influence of the cycling frequency on the crack growth rates.
