Book excerpt: This book gathers the proceedings of the 12th instalment in the bi-annual Workshop series on Direct and Large Eddy Simulation (DLES), which began in 1994 and focuses on modern techniques used to simulate turbulent flows based on the partial or full resolution of the instantaneous turbulent flow structure. With the rapidly expanding capacities of modern computers, this approach has attracted more and more interest over the years and will undoubtedly be further enhanced and applied in the future. Hybrid modelling techniques based on a combination of LES and RANS approaches also fall into this category and are covered as well. The goal of the Workshop was to share the state of the art in DNS, LES and related techniques for the computation and modelling of turbulent and transitional flows. The respective papers highlight the latest advances in the prediction, understanding and control of turbulent flows in academic and industrial applications.

Book excerpt: We present results from numerical simulations of the evolution of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability for an unforced, subsonic, compressible axisymmetric, spatially-evolving shear layer. In addition, we study the effect of small, random pressure fluctuations at the nozzle orifice on the growth of the mixing layers. These fluctuations model inflow perturbations in experimental flows arising from turbulence and boundary layers in the nozzle. The finite-difference numerical model used to perform the simulations solves the two-dimensional time-dependent conservation equations for an ideal fluid using the Flux-Corrected Transport algorithm and timestep-splitting techniques. No subgrid turbulence model has been included. In the absence of perturbations, the calculations indicate that the large scale development of the unforced jet shear layer has an underlying degree of organization. This is the result of a feedback mechanism in which the shear layer ahead of nozzle edge is modulated by the far field induced gy the mergings on downstream, near the end of the potential core of the jet. The studies with random high frequency perturbations on the inflow velocity show that they effectively tend to break the temporal correlations between the structures. Keywords: Coherent structures; Free Shear flows.

Book excerpt: The atomization of a liquid jet by a high speed cross-flowing gas has many applications such as gas turbines and augmentors. The mechanisms by which the liquid jet initially breaks up, however, are not well understood. Experimental studies suggest the dependence of spray properties on operating conditions and nozzle geometry. Detailed numerical simulations can offer better understanding of the underlying physical mechanisms that lead to the breakup of the injected liquid jet. In this work, detailed numerical simulation results of turbulent liquid jets injected into turbulent gaseous cross flows for different density ratios is presented. A finite volume, balanced force fractional step flow solver to solve the Navier-Stokes equations is employed and coupled to a Refined Level Set Grid method to follow the phase interface. To enable the simulation of atomization of high density ratio fluids, we ensure discrete consistency between the solution of the conservative momentum equation and the level set based continuity equation by employing the Consistent Rescaled Momentum Transport (CRMT) method. The impact of different inflow jet boundary conditions on different jet properties including jet penetration is analyzed and results are compared to those obtained experimentally by Brown & McDonell(2006). In addition, instability analysis is performed to find the most dominant insta- bility mechanism that causes the liquid jet to breakup. Linear instability analysis is achieved using linear theories for Rayleigh-Taylor and Kelvin- Helmholtz instabilities and non-linear analysis is performed using our flow solver with different inflow jet boundary conditions.

In this paper, a numerical solution for the time- dependent development of a weakly compressible axisymmetric jet issuing into a cross-flow is discussed. Most of the basic vortex systems that are observed experimentally are also observed in the results of the simulation. In particular, the formation of wake vortices in a numerical simulation is observed for the first time and gives hope that the mechanisms responsible for wake vortex formation can be determined using the numerical procedure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study presents a detailed analysis of the flow topologies and turbulence scales in the jet-in-cross-flow experiment of [Su and Mungal JFM 2004]. The analysis is performed using the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) technique with a highly resolved grid and time-step and well controlled boundary conditions. This enables quantitative agreement with the first and second moments of turbulence statistics measured in the experiment. LES is used to perform the analysis since experimental measurements of time-resolved 3D fields are still in their infancy and because sampling periods are generally limited with direct numerical simulation. A major focal point is the comprehensive characterization of the turbulence scales and their evolution. Time-resolved probes are used with long sampling periods to obtain maps of the integral scales, Taylor microscales, and turbulent kinetic energy spectra. Scalar-fluctuation scales are also quantified. In the near-field, coherent structures are clearly identified, both in physical and spectral space. Along the jet centerline, turbulence scales grow according to a classical one-third power law. However, the derived maps of turbulence scales reveal strong inhomogeneities in the flow. From the modeling perspective, these insights are useful to design optimized grids and improve numerical predictions in similar configurations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The homogenization of single phase gases or liquids with chemical reactive components by mixing belongs to one of the oldest basic operations applied in chemical engineering. The mixing process is used as an essential step in nearly all processes of the chemical industry as well as the pharmaceutical and food ind- tries. Recent experimentally and theoretically based results from research work lead to a fairly good prediction of the velocity fields in differend kinds of mixers, where as predictions of simultaneously proceeding homogeneous chemical re- tions, are still not reliable in a similar way. Therefore the design of equipment for mixing processes is still derived from measurements of the so called “mixing time” which is related to the applied methods of measurement and the special - sign of the test equipment itself. The cooperation of 17 research groups was stimulated by improved modern methods for experimental research and visualization, for simulations and nume- cal calculations of mixing and chemical reactions in micro and macro scale of time and local coordinates. The research work was financed for a six years period within the recently finished Priority Program of the German Research Foundation (DFG) named “Analysis, modeling and numerical prediction of flow-mixig with and without chemical reactions (SPP 1141)”. The objective of the investigations was to improve the prediction of efficiencies and selectivities of chemical re- tions on macroscopic scale.
