Book excerpt: This book provides students and researchers in fluid engineering with an up-to-date overview of turbulent flow research in the areas of simulation and modeling. A key element of the book is the systematic, rational development of turbulence closure models and related aspects of modern turbulent flow theory and prediction. Starting with a review of the spectral dynamics of homogenous and inhomogeneous turbulent flows, succeeding chapters deal with numerical simulation techniques, renormalization group methods and turbulent closure modeling. Each chapter is authored by recognized leaders in their respective fields, and each provides a thorough and cohesive treatment of the subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerical Methods in Turbulence Simulation provides detailed specifications of the numerical methods needed to solve important problems in turbulence simulation. Numerical simulation of turbulent fluid flows is challenging because of the range of space and time scales that must be represented. This book provides explanations of the numerical error and stability characteristics of numerical techniques, along with treatments of the additional numerical challenges that arise in large eddy simulations. Chapters are written as tutorials by experts in the field, covering specific both contexts and applications. Three classes of turbulent flow are addressed, including incompressible, compressible and reactive, with a wide range of the best numerical practices covered. A thorough introduction to the numerical methods is provided for those without a background in turbulence, as is everything needed for a thorough understanding of the fundamental equations. The small scales that must be resolved are generally not localized around some distinct small-scale feature, but instead are distributed throughout a volume. These characteristics put particular strain on the numerical methods used to simulate turbulent flows. - Includes a detailed review of the numerical approximation issues that impact the simulation of turbulence - Provides a range of examples of large eddy simulation techniques - Discusses the challenges posed by boundary conditions in turbulence simulation and provides approaches to addressing them

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In various branches of fluid mechanics, our understanding is inhibited by the presence of turbulence. Although many experimental and theoretical studies have significantly helped to increase our physical understanding, a comp- hensive and predictive theory of turbulent flows has not yet been established. Therefore, the prediction of turbulent flow relies heavily on simulation stra- gies. The development of reliable methods for turbulent flow computation will have a significant impact on a variety of technological advancements. These range from aircraft and car design, to turbomachinery, combustors, and process engineering. Moreover, simulation approaches are important in materials - sign, prediction of biologically relevant flows, and also significantly contribute to the understanding of environmental processes including weather and climate forecasting. The material that is compiled in this book presents a coherent account of contemporary computational approaches for turbulent flows. It aims to p- vide the reader with information about the current state of the art as well as to stimulate directions for future research and development. The book puts part- ular emphasis on computational methods for incompressible and compressible turbulent flows as well as on methods for analysing and quantifying nume- cal errors in turbulent flow computations. In addition, it presents turbulence modelling approaches in the context of large eddy simulation, and unfolds the challenges in the field of simulations for multiphase flows and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) of engineering flows in complex geometries. Apart from reviewing main research developments, new material is also included in many of the chapters.

Book excerpt: We propose to perform turbulent flow simulations in such a manner that the difference operators do have the same symmetry properties as the underlying differential operators, i.e. the convective operator is represented by a skew-symmetric matrix and the diffusive operator is approximated by a symmetric, positive-definite matrix. Such a symmetry-preserving discretization of the Navier-Stokes equations is stable on any grid, and conserves the total mass, momentum and kinetic energy (when the physical dissipation is turned off). Its accuracy is tested for a turbulent channel flow at Re--5,600 (based on the channel width and the mean bulk velocity) by comparing the results to those of physical experiments and previous numerical studies. This comparison shows that with a fourth-order, symmetry-preserving method a 64 x 64 x 32 grid suffices to perform an accurate direct numerical simulation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents numerical simulations of three-dimensional turbulent open-channel flows. In the simulations, Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are solved with the Reynolds stress model for turbulence closure. The overall solution strategy is the SIMPLER algorithm, and the power-law scheme is used to discretise the convection and diffusion terms in the governing equations. The Reynolds stress model is applied to rectangular open-channel flows, partly-vegetated open-channel flows, and compound open-channel flows. The simulated mean flow and turbulence structures including streamwise mean velocity, secondary currents, turbulence intensity, and Reynolds stress, are provided and compared with measure data in the literature. As shown in this book, these comparisons reveal that the proposed Reynolds stress model successfully predicts the mean flow and turbulence statistics of turbulent open-channel flows.
