Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A better understanding of the complex behavior of masonry structures is necessary to embrace the more appropriate concept of ultimate strength design. Due to the prohibitive cost of full scale testing of masonry systems, a more economical method utilizing direct modeling techniques is proposed. It is the objective of this study to evaluate the use of direct modeling of ungrouted and grouted concrete block masonry under axial compression. A total of 49 quarter-scale block prisms were tested under axial compression. Correlations between model results and available prototype tests are performed. The study includes the effects of mortar strength, grout strength, height-to-thickness ratio, number of courses, and bond type on prism compressive strength. Excellent correlations were obtained for mode of failure and moduli of elasticity. It is concluded that direct modeling is feasible and is capable of predicting the behavior of masonry. Deviations from prototype strength results were observed which are attributed to size effect of aggregate and imperfections in geometry of the model blocks.

Owing to the prohibitive cost of full-scale testing of masonry systems, a more economical method utilizing direct modeling techniques is proposed. It is the objective of this study to evaluate the use of direct modeling of ungrouted and grouted block masonry under shear and in-plane tension. A total of 62 quarter-scale model shear and tension specimens were tested, and the results were compared with similar prototype test results. The study includes the effect of mortar strength, grout strength, and load orientation on the assemblage mode of failure and ultimate strength. Correlations between model and prototype results are performed. Excellent correlations were obtained for mode of failure and the overall effects of different parameters. It is concluded that direct modeling is feasible and is capable of predicting the behavior of masonry. Deviations from prototype strength results were observed that are attributed to size effect of aggregate, imperfections in unit geometry, and higher strength values of model blocks.

This book was released on 2011 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to justify the feasibility of small-scale concrete masonry modeling technique for the construction of the 1/3-scale masonry test building, model masonry materials and assemblages performance related to nominal full-scale concrete masonry tests must be clearly established. This will be accomplished by conducting a suite of material tests (block units, mortar, grout, and reinforcing steel), assemblage tests (axial compression prism, bed-joint shear (cross specimens), diagonal tension, and flexural tension), and component tests (out-of-plane and in-plane walls) using both full-scale and reduced scale units. This experimental study is intended to investigate the feasibility of using of 1/3-scale direct modeling techniques of concrete block masonry materials and assemblages under different loading conditions. The methodology and techniques of fabrication 1/3-scale direct models of concrete block masonry components material and masonry assemblages were evaluated. For concrete masonry components material, the strength of block unit, mortar and grout and the stress-strain and ductility characteristics of reinforcement were examined. The behavior of ungrouted and grouted 1/3-scale assemblages were investigated by conducting axial compression, bed-joint shear, diagonal tension and modulus of rupture tests. Direct correlation between the model and prototype test results was performed. Good correlation of failure modes, strength and deformation characteristics was achieved. The experimental results demonstrated that direct modeling techniques applied to the investigation of behavior characteristics of masonry materials and assemblages is effective in understanding the overall behavior of full-scale concrete block masonry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reports on a comprehensive analytical, experimental and numerical study on the flexural response of post-tensioned masonry walls under in-plane loads. It explores an important mechanism in this new generation of structural walls, called “Self-centering”. This mechanism can reduce residual drifts and structural damage during earthquake ground motion, and is particularly favorable for structures which are designed for immediate occupancy performance levels. The book reports on the development and verification of a finite element model of post-tensioned masonry walls. It describes a detailed parametric study to predict the strength of post-tensioned masonry walls. New design methodologies and expressions are developed to predict the flexural strength and force-displacement response of post-tensioned masonry. Experimental study is carried out to better understand the behavior of post-tensioned masonry walls and also to evaluate the accuracy of the proposed design procedure and expressions. The book also includes an introduction to current research on unbounded post-tensioned masonry walls, together with an extensive analysis of previously published test results.

It is shown that the effect of vertical load and wall slenderness on transverse strength can be predicted by rational analysis. The analysis is based on established theory which has been extended to account for the properties of masonry. Similar methods of rational analysis have been adopted for the design of steel structures and are presently being considered for reinforced concrete structures.
