Book excerpt: Juvenile chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) were experimentally infected with Renibacterium salmoninarum (Rs), the causative agent of bacterial kidney disease (BKD), to investigate the effects of BKD on three aspects of juvenile salmonid performance: (1) predator avoidance ability; (2) smoltification; and (3) physiological responses to stress. For these experiments, fish with different Rs-infection profiles (created by using an immersion challenge method) were sampled to assess physiological change and subjected to various performance tests during disease progression. When equal numbers of Rs-challenged and unchallenged fish were subjected to predation by northern pikeminnow (Ptychocheilus oregonensis) or smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieui), Rs-challenged fish were eaten in significantly greater numbers than controls by nearly two to one. A progressively worsening infection with Rs did not alter the normal changes in gill ATPase and condition factor associated with smoltification in juvenile chinook salmon. A dramatic proliferation of BKD was associated with maximal responses of indicators of smoltification, suggesting that the process of smoltification itself can trigger outbreaks of disease. When Rs-infected fish were subjected to three 60-s bouts of severe handling that were separated by 48-72 h, this experience did not lead to higher infection levels or increased mortality when compared to diseased fish that did not receive the stressors. Furthermore, the kinetics of plasma cortisol, glucose, and lactate over 24-h following each stressor were similar between fish with moderate to high BKD and those that had low or no detectable infection. Fish with moderate to high Rs infections had higher titers of cortisol and lactate prior to each application of the stressor and were also unable to consistently elicit a significant hyperglycemia in response to the stressors when compared to fish with low infection levels. During all experiments, fish consistently developed decreased hematocrits and blood glucose levels and increased levels of cortisol and lactate as the disease worsened, indicating that BKD is stressful, particularly during the later stages. Collectively, these results illustrate the impact of BKD on juvenile salmonids and have also ascribed some ecological significance to this disease beyond that of direct pathogen-related mortality.

Human-modified habitats can change non-native predator functional and aggregative responses with additive impacts on native prey species. I assessed how the non-native predator, striped bass (Morone saxatilis), and habitat alterations (small diversion dam and other altered habitats) interact to influence mortality on native juvenile Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) migrating to sea on the lower Mokelumne River, CA (USA). Relative abundance and diet surveys across natural and human-altered habitats assessed functional and aggregative responses of striped bass. Striped bass showed elevated per capita consumption of juvenile salmon and behavioral aggregation (estimated as catch per unit effort - CPUE) at a small diversion dam site (Woodbridge Irrigation District Dam: per capita consumption= 3.54 juvenile salmon per striped bass and CPUE= 0.189) over other altered (0 juvenile salmon per striped bass; CPUE= 0.0024) and natural habitats (N/A; CPUE= 0.0003) creating a localized area of heightened predation. At this predation hotspot, experimental predator removals, diet energetic analysis, and before-after impact assessment estimated striped bass consumption of the population of out-migrating juvenile salmon to be between 10-29%. Striped bass per capita consumption rates among the three approaches were 0.92%, 1.01-1.11%, and 0.96-1.11% respectively. This study highlights how interactions between multiple stressors can exacerbate consequences for native species and are important to examine when predicting ecological impacts from stressors and planning local management strategies.

Book excerpt: The early marine phase following freshwater emigration has been identified as a critical period in salmonid (Oncorhynchus spp.) life history, characterized by high but variable mortality. Consistent with the “growth-mortality” and “bigger-is-better” hypotheses, at least some of the mortality during the critical period appears to be size-dependent – with smaller or slower growing individuals less likely to survive than larger, faster growing conspecifics. Size and growth are flexible morphological traits that vary with prey availability, yet there is incomplete information on the temporal and spatial match/mismatch between juvenile salmonids and their marine prey in the Northern California Current Ecosystem. This work addressed a gap in the understanding of seasonal variability in prey community composition, abundance, and quality during early marine residence. Three studies were conducted using a population of subyearling (age-0) Chinook salmon (O. tshawytscha) from the upper Columbia River in order to evaluate the effects of prey on salmon growth, biochemistry, and performance. The first was a laboratory study that tested for growth rate and swimming speed differences in salmon reared on three treatment diets followed by three fasting treatments to assess the effects of variability in summer diet quality and winter diet quantity. Significant differences in growth were detected among fasting treatments but not diet treatments. Also, larger salmon with more storage lipids swam faster than smaller leaner fish following fasting, indirectly supporting the notion that growth during the critical period provides a carryover benefit important for overwinter survival. Salmon fatty acids and bulk stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen were measured throughout the experiment to provide estimates of turnover and incorporation rates. The next study was a longitudinal field study that measured variation in salmon size and prey field community throughout the early ocean period (May – September) over two years of high marine survival (2011 and 2012) to better understand the relationship between prey community composition and salmon growth. Maximum growth rates were associated with high biomass of northern anchovy (Engraulis mordax) which peaked in abundance at different times in each year. The final bioenergetics modeling study combined data from the laboratory and field studies to evaluate the relative importance of prey availability, prey energy density, and temperature on salmon growth. Variation in feeding rate was related most with growth rate variability and least with prey energy density. Throughout their range, subyearlings can grow at high rates in the ocean (>2% body weight per day) by consuming both invertebrate and marine fish prey. However, when marine fish prey are highly abundant they likely provide an energetic advantage over invertebrate prey by reducing overall foraging costs. Quantifying the abundance, size, diet, and distribution of juvenile salmonids relative to their prey field throughout early ocean residence will contribute to a better understanding of seasonal differences in trophic interactions that are associated with differences in annual growth and survival rates. Moreover, an integrated approach that combines sampling of prey with measurements of predator growth, diet, fatty acids, and stable isotopes provides a useful framework for assessing trophic dynamics and evaluating the effects of climate variability and change on predator and prey communities.
