Book excerpt: Hercules Performed explores the reception of the ancient Greek hero Herakles – the Roman Hercules – on the western stage from the sixteenth century to the present day, focusing on live theatre, including tragedy, comedy and musical drama. Each chapter considers a particular work or theme in detail, exploring the interplay between classical models and a wide variety of modern performance contexts. The volume is one of four to be published in the Metaforms series examining the extraordinarily persistent figuring of Herakles-Hercules in western culture, drawing together scholars from a range of disciplines to offer a unique insight into the hero’s perennial appeal.

This book was released on 2002 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a response to a need often expressed by both students and researchers in philology, classical studies, and related fields in the humanities. Indeed, it is scarcely possible to read an article, whether in a scholarly journal or daily newspaper, without coming up against an incredible number of initialisms, abbreviations, or acronyms. This 2-volume work, in modern dictionary form, gives as exhaustive a list as possible of the abbreviations used, and appends useful information: the author's name, the place and date of publication, and other relevant details. Entries containing non-Roman characters (such as Cyrillic or Slavic) are transliterated and also given in their original languages. Journals that list their titles in several languages on their title pages are listed by each of those titles. Over 27,000 acronyms and abbreviations appear here.

Book Synopsis Territory, Time and State by : Francesco Allegrucci
Download or read book Territory, Time and State written by Francesco Allegrucci and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1994-09-08 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Territory, Time and State is a study of long term archaeological history in the remote and beautiful upland valley of Gubbio within the Umbrian Apennines of Italy. The aim of the work is well defined by the natural constraints of this mountainous region. The authors have developed a multi-disciplinary approach to study the human and physical characteristics of the valley from the paleolithic to the medieval period. They integrate the analysis of a unique text (the Iguvine Tables) with excavation, field survey and environmental reconstruction to provide a synthesis of current knowledge. They break boundaries of time and tradition which are normally compartmentalised between different scholars. Although the linkage is sometimes controversial, it is always stimulating. The book has two major focuses: the first is on the Bronze Age landscape where spectacular sites and finds have contributed very significantly to our knowledge of pre-state Italy; and the second is on the identity and character of the early city state of Gubbio and its incorporation into the Roman world.
