Book excerpt: The report deals with the theoretical and experimental work done on the basic techniques and successful operation of a stable, frequency-doubled, single-frequency Nd:YAG laser. An efficient, resonant cavity design with the Nd: YAG rod acting as an internal focusing element was used to attain adequate TEM sub 00 mode volumes in the laser rod and the small beam waists at the nonlinear crystal (Ba2NaNb5O15) necessary for optimum intracavity second-harmonic generation. Various mode filters were investigated, resulting in the use of a double, intracavity Fabry-Perot etalon arrangement to obtain single-frequency operation of the Nd:YAGlaser with relative ease. Mode competition effects were studied, and the necessary conditions for stable single-frequency operation at both 1.06 and 0.53 micrometers were established. Techniques and component designs were successfully developed to obtain all the frequency-doubled output in a single direction. These included appropriate cavity geometries and the design of doubly reflecting laser mirrors for both 1.06 and 0.53 micrometers including phase considerations, and also the development of AR coatings on Ba2NaNb5O15 effective at both wavelengths. The adequacy of the techniques adopted was demonstrated, and a unidirectional, single-frequency, frequency-doubled power output of 0.35 W obtained consistently from a 5 by 50 mm Nd:YAG rod pumped by a tungsten-iodine lamp operated at approx 850 W in a spherical pump cavity.

It was originally envisioned by the AFWL in their RFP that this goal would be accomplished by frequency doubling the 1.32 micrometer output from a pulsed Nd:YAG laser system. However, such an approach is difficult for at least two reasons. First, competition from the 1.06 micrometer transition in Nd:YAG makes it difficult to obtain the required 1.32 micrometer pulse energies in a low-order transverse mode. Secondly, a damage resistant, 90 degree phase-matchable nonlinear crystal for doubling 1.32 micrometer is not readily available. Thus the approach which was recommended in our proposal and which was followed on this program was to (1) generate 1.06 micrometer pulses with a Nd:YAG oscillator/amplifier chain, (2) generate second-harmonic pulses at .53 micrometer using deuterated cesium dihydrogen arsenate as the nonlinear material, and (3) use the 0.53 micrometer pulses to pump a dye laser.

Book excerpt: Single-pass frequency doubling of near-infrared (NIR) diode lasers in nonlinear bulk crystals allows to realize compact lasers in the green spectral region, offering continuous-wave (CW) laser radiation characterized by a high spectral brightness. In order to increase the efficiency of such laser systems, the application of quasi phase-matched waveguide structures instead of bulk crystals is investigated theoretically and experimentally. In particular, a complemented study of second-harmonic generation (SHG) in periodically poled MgO-doped lithium niobate (MgO:LN) ridge and planar waveguides is conducted. This study aims at identifying benefits and limitations for both geometries with respect to maximum conversion efficiency and accessible power. The application of waveguide structures presented in this thesis results in a distinct improvement of the opto-optical conversion efficiency – from approximately 20 % in a bulk crystal to almost 30 % in a planar waveguide, and to around 40 % in a ridge waveguide. A maximum second-harmonic power of nearly 0.4 W in a ridge waveguide and 1.2 W in planar waveguide is reached. The generated laser radiation in the green spectral range is characterized by a single-frequency spectrum and nearly diffrac-tion-limited beam quality and thus ideally suited for applications in bio-medicine, bio-technology, and spectroscopy.

The purpose of this work was to obtain data required for the optimized design of Nd: YALO3 and Nd, Cr: YALO3 lasers for various applications and to extend the state of the art of optically pumped Nd lasers. The topics studied during this program included material cross sections and excited-state lifetimes, effects of polarization and rod orientation, thermal focusing and distortion effects, device efficiencies with various types of pumping lamps and pump cavity reflectors, and susceptibility of YALO3 laser rods to optically-induced surface damage. In addition, various device parameters such as optimum output coupling, behavior in Q-switched and in continuous lowest loss transverse mode operation, and the effect of rod doping on laser efficiency were investigated. Internal and external frequency doubling of the Nd: YALO3 laser was also studied. Finally, a comparison was made of the relative advantages of YALO3 and YAG lasers for various applications and modes of operation. In general the principal advantages of YALO3 over YAG are realized in linear-polarized applications at average powers greater than 10 watts output and in high-efficiency, long-pulse flash-pumped devices. YALO3 lasers appear to be slightly superior to YAG for lowest loss transverse mode and Q-switched high-energy-storage applications. Low-power cw lasers using YALO3 have somewhat higher thresholds than YAG lasers similarly pumped; however for nonlinear optical applications YALO3 lasers offer better performance because of their inherent linear polarization.

The laser was operated C.W. at the 2 to 3 watt level in a TEM transverse mode, and mode locked at 500 MHz. The major results were: Up to 400 mw of second harmonic power with a conversion efficiency of 15% was generated and demonstrated to be stable (less than 10% drift) over testing periods of 15 minutes or greater. A maximum of 550 mw of second harmonic was generated at 16% efficiency but at this level the system was stable for only a few minutes.
