Book Synopsis Vertebrate Paleontology in Utah by : David D. Gillette
Download or read book Vertebrate Paleontology in Utah written by David D. Gillette and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 1999 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 52 papers in this vary in content from summaries or state-of-knowledge treatments, to detailed contributions that describe new species. Although the distinction is subtle, the title (Vertebrate Paleontology in Utah) indicates the science of paleontology in the state of Utah, rather than the even more ambitious intent if it were given the title “Vertebrate Paleontology of Utah” which would promise an encyclopedic treatment of the subject. The science of vertebrate paleontology in Utah is robust and intense. It has grown prodigiously in the past decade, and promises to continue to grow indefinitely. This research benefits everyone in the state, through Utah’s muse ums and educational institutions, which are the direct beneficiaries.
Book Synopsis Dinosaurs, Birds, and Pterosaurs of Korea by : Jeong Yul Kim
Download or read book Dinosaurs, Birds, and Pterosaurs of Korea written by Jeong Yul Kim and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-01-03 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first academic book about the dinosaurs, birds and pterosaurs of Korea, one of the richest and most exciting regions on earth for the study of vertebrate ichnology. Many ichnogenera appear indigenous to Korea, and based on present evidence there is nowhere else in the world where such densities and diversity of vertebrate tracks have been reported. Many sites also reveal the highest density of bird and dinosaur track levels in the world. The book describes the significant advances in Cretaceous vertebrate ichnology and dinosaur research made in Korea over the past twenty years. Several dinosaur fossil sites have been excavated, and unique vertebrate fossils including dinosaurs and pterosaurs have been discovered. This landslide of discovery has resulted in a proliferation of papers on vertebrate tracks and remains from the Cretaceous of South Korea and the growing recognition that as a region it reveals multiple track-rich sequences of unique quality and scientific utility. Because of the outstanding ichnological resources in this region it has been dubbed the Korean Cretaceous Dinosaur Coast (KCDC), and many sites of national and international significance have been designated as national natural monuments of Korea. This book is written for geologists, paleontologists, ichnologists, geology and earth science students, and earth science teachers at high school, as well as the general reader interested in ancient life including the dinosaurs, birds, and pterosaurs of Korea. The goal of this book is to provide readers with a scientific understanding of Mesozoic life flourishing in the Korean Peninsula. To facilitate easy comprehension, the book contains many sketches, graphs, diagrams, photographs and tables and is supported by a comprehensive glossary.

Book Synopsis The Second Jurassic Dinosaur Rush by : Paul D. Brinkman
Download or read book The Second Jurassic Dinosaur Rush written by Paul D. Brinkman and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-07-15 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The so-called “Bone Wars” of the 1880s, which pitted Edward Drinker Cope against Othniel Charles Marsh in a frenzy of fossil collection and discovery, may have marked the introduction of dinosaurs to the American public, but the second Jurassic dinosaur rush, which took place around the turn of the twentieth century, brought the prehistoric beasts back to life. These later expeditions—which involved new competitors hailing from leading natural history museums in New York, Chicago, and Pittsburgh—yielded specimens that would be reconstructed into the colossal skeletons that thrill visitors today in museum halls across the country. Reconsidering the fossil speculation, the museum displays, and the media frenzy that ushered dinosaurs into the American public consciousness, Paul Brinkman takes us back to the birth of dinomania, the modern obsession with all things Jurassic. Featuring engaging and colorful personalities and motivations both altruistic and ignoble, The Second Jurassic Dinosaur Rush shows that these later expeditions were just as foundational—if not more so—to the establishment of paleontology and the budding collections of museums than the more famous Cope and Marsh treks. With adventure, intrigue, and rivalry, this is science at its most swashbuckling.

Book Synopsis Taxonomy, Morphology, Masticatory Function and Phylogeny of Heterodontosaurid Dinosaurs by : Paul C. Sereno
Download or read book Taxonomy, Morphology, Masticatory Function and Phylogeny of Heterodontosaurid Dinosaurs written by Paul C. Sereno and published by PenSoft Publishers LTD. This book was released on 2012-10-03 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This major study on heterodontosaurid dinosaurs is the first to review the taxonomy, morphology, functional anatomy, and phylogeny of this important early radiation of small-bodied herbivores. Heterodontosaurids persisted for approximately 100 My, from Late Triassic to Early Cretaceous time, during which they evolved some of the most sophisticated dentitions for processing plant materials. Some species required reevaluation to establish unequivocally their status as heterodontosaurids, such as Echinodon from rocks in southern England, one of the first and smallest dinosaurs ever described. Tianyulong from northern China is described in more detail in the study and is shown to have unusual skeletal proportions, including a relatively large skull and very short forelimb. A new taxon, Pegomastax africanus gen. n. sp. n., is described from southern Africa with a short parrot-shaped bill. Tooth replacement and tooth-to-tooth wear is more common than previously thought among heterodontosaurids, which the author argues are herbivores despite their prominent caniniform teeth. Heterodontosaurds appear to have split early in their history into a northern group with primitive, subtriangular crowns and a southern group with deeper crown proportions.
