Download or read book Geosynclines written by Jean Aubouin and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geosynclines is devoted to the geosynclines concept, which states that the most elevated parts of the earth's crust—the mountains—had risen by a gigantic inversion of relief from the more depressed regions where they had originated. This book re-examines the concept in light of further geological evidence. The book is organized into four parts. Part I presents a detailed account of the birth and development of the geosynclinal concept. It shows that only the European (Alpine) concept of the geosyncline involves a fundamental palaeogeographical differentiation of mountain chains, and that it is from this standpoint that the American concept must be considered if it is to be placed in a more general framework. Part II attempts to define the geosynclinal concept in the Alpine sense of the term: i.e., in the light of current views on the Mediterranean chains of the Alpine cycle, which are the best documented. Part III collates the information acquired on the various aspects of geosynclines as exemplified by the Mediterranean chains of the Alpine cycle. Part IV discusses the degree to which the ""Alpine"" concept of the geosyncline may be extended in time.

Book Synopsis Sedimentation, Tectonics and Eustasy by : David I. M. Macdonald
Download or read book Sedimentation, Tectonics and Eustasy written by David I. M. Macdonald and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-04-15 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last ten years, seismic and sequence stratigraphic studies have emphasized the role of worldwide fluctuations in sea level in controlling patterns of sedimentation. Widely recognized cycles of coastal onlap are thought to have been caused by such global changes. This postgraduate and reference text contains contributions from an international team of specialists. The book is based upon an IAS meeting which focused attention on the situation at active plate margins, covering three major themes: the underlying mechanics and rates of relative sea-level change at active plate margins; the interaction of eustatic and tectonic processes at modern margins; recognition of the products in the sedimentary record and possible criteria for distinguishing global eustatic from local tectonic effects. This book is intended for those studying and working in sedimentology, basin analysis, exploration geophysics and petroleum geology.
Book Synopsis Key Issues in Petroleum Geology by : F. John Gregory
Download or read book Key Issues in Petroleum Geology written by F. John Gregory and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2007 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains a compilation of 17 seminal papers, taken from various Geological Society Special Publications and the Journal of the Geological Society, on the use and application of stratigraphy in petroleum geology over the last 20 years. The volume focuses on case studies in fundamental stratigraphy, applied and integrated stratigraphy and alternative methods of stratigraphy. The book is introduced with an original scientific and historical review of the subject: all papers are set in context with both the benefits of the techniques and some of the short-comings highlighted. By compiling these papers, commercial stratigraphers John Gregory, Philip Copestake and Julian Pearce have created a volume intended for a wide readership. However, it is of particular relevance for the training of undergraduate students studying courses on petroleum geology, basin development and sequence stratigraphy as well as for all postgraduate students working in petroleum-related scientific fields. It is also intended as a volume of general use for geoscientists entering the petroleum industry, as well as current workers requiring an overview.
