Book excerpt: This book reflects upon the political philosophy of Muhammad Iqbal, a towering intellectual figure in South Asian history, revered by many for his poetry and his thought. He lived in India in the twilight years of the British Empire and, apart from a short but significant period studying in the West, he remained in Punjab until his death in 1938. The book studies Iqbal's critique of nationalist ideology and his attempts to chart a path for the development of the 'nation' by liberating it from the centralizing and homogenizing tendencies of the modern state structure. Iqbal frequently clashed with his contemporaries over his view of nationalism as 'the greatest enemy of Islam'. He constructed his own particular interpretation of Islam - forged through an interaction with Muslim thinkers and Western intellectual traditions - that was ahead of its time, and since his death both modernists and Islamists have continued to champion his legacy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Secrets of the Self is a book-length, philosophical poem rooted in metaphysical thought and ideology, as well as Islamic theology. Originally published in 1915, the poem speaks of the "Self" in relation to the universe, how it is the inner power and soul of each individual human. It instructs on how to improve the Self through Love and willpower, which can then help one control the forces within the universe. The poem includes stories that illustrate its points and promotes the spread of Islamic ideals. MUHAMMAD IQBAL (1877-1938) was a poet, prophet, and politician in British India. Born in Sialkot, Punjab, Iqbal converted to Islam with his family as a child. He studied literature and law at Cambridge, Munich, and Heidelberg before starting his own law practice and concentrating on his scholarly writing, which he authored primarily in Persian. Many of Iqbal's works promote Islamic revival, especially in South Asia, and he was a well-known leader of the All India Muslim League. Today, he is recognized as the official poet of Pakistan, and his birthday is celebrated as a national holiday.

Book excerpt: Numerous people came in this world, performed extra-ordinary deeds for the welfare of humanity. After passing away, they were remembered for their noble acts. Nonetheless, there are a few who did such reformative actions in religious, social, literary and political spheres, whose influence would remain untarnished forever. They are in fact sent for the guidance of human beings, for the inculcation and development of moral conduct and character of human beings, for the promotion of tolerance, respect for humanity, social justice and equality. These personalities, because of their intellectual and spiritual might and impact, purified manifested as well as inner selves of people and guided them in all spheres of life. One such figure is Sultan-ul-Arifeen Hadrat Sultan Bahoo (1629-1691). He, through his teachings and conduct, guided people towards recognition of one s self as well as Divine Unison with the Creator. The MUSLIM Institute in collaboration with the IRD organised a seminar titled Intellectual Dimensions of Hadrat Sultan Bahoo and Global Peace on Tuesday May 07, 2013 at Iqbal Hall, International Islamic University, Faisal Mosque Campus, Islamabad. This Seminar is an academic contribution in the present era, when the global world particularly Muslim community is facing challenges of religious dissension and intolerance. One of the major concerns for the Muslim world is growing tensions and conflicts between different schools of thought and sects. At a time when the Muslim Ummah needs to stand together in solidarity to face different internal and external challenges, this intra-faith discord is most unfortunate. The seminar aimed at highlighting the Sufi teachings, thoughts and intellectual dimensions of Hadrat Sultan Bahoo, and also the role he played in guiding people from materialism to spiritual ascension, from worldly joys to inner contentment and also in making man aware of one s real status. The seminar was held in two sessions in which eminent scholars and literary figures shared their views and presented their papers on the subject. This book is compilation of essays and statements presented.

This book was released on 2000 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excellent bibliographical work about Allama Muhammad Iqbal in the Arabic scripts (Urdu, Persian, Arabic and so on) has been published by the Iqbal Academy, Lahore. Our publication covers only what appeared in the Roman script: English, German, French, Dutch, Italian, Polish, Czech, Portuguese, Swedish, Finnish, Turkish, and Russian. Many books have some kind of bibliographical list, and we have tried to include all that material in the present publication. With the generous support of the Ministry of Education, Government of Pakistan, the Iqbal Foundation Europe at the KULeuven, Belgium, has endeavoured to combine meticulous and patient work in libraries with the most modern search on internet. The result is an impressive tribute to Iqbal and to the research about him: 2500 entries, the latest entry dated 1998 (A. Schimmel). Even if many superfluous or repetitive articles may have been published, a researcher should look at even small contributions: they may contain valuable information and rare insights. The databank we compiled at the university of Leuven is composed of material taken from published works and from the on-line services of the major university libraries. From this it appeared that hundreds of scholars and authors have contributed to the immense databank about Iqbal. The highest number of contributions is by Annemarie Schimmel, S.A. Vahid and B.A. Dar, followed by A. Bausani, K.A. Waheed, A.J. Arberry and so many others.

Book excerpt: Bringing together Islamic studies, a postcolonial literary perspective, and a focus on the interaction between aesthetics and politics, this book analyses Iqbal’s Islamism through his poetry. It argues that his notion of an Islamist selfhood was expressed in his verse through the interplay between poetic tradition and creative innovation. It also considers how Iqbal expressed an Islamist geopolitical imagination in his work, and examines his exploration of the relationship between the modern West and a reconstructed Islam. For the first time, Iqbal’s personal letters have been drawn upon to provide an insight into his inner conflicts as articulated in his poetry. Concentrating on the complexity of his work in its own right, the book eschews the standard appropriation of Iqbal into any one political agenda — be it Indian nationalism, Muslim separatism or Iranian Islamic republicanism. With its analytical and in-depth reading of Iqbal’s verse and prose, this book opens a fresh perspective on Islam and postcolonialism. It will be a fascinating study for general readers and readers with interests in the intellectual and political history of modern South Asia, colonialism and postcolonialism, Islamic studies, and modern South Asian literature (especially Urdu and Persian poetry).

Just two years earlier, he had been a slave, condemned to a lifetime of bonded labor in a Pakistani carpet factory. And five months later, he was dead, murdered in his homeland. Though he is gone, his actions inspired an international campaign of middle-school students and adults that is helping to free and to educate thousands of child laborers. Here is the powerful story of Iqbal's life and death in Pakistan, and of the movement that continues the struggle against child labor today. This book does more than recount Iqbal's own amazing odyssey. Both sobering and inspiring, it shows how we are all implicated in the global practice of child labor, and how we can all work together to end it.
