Book excerpt: Dimensional metrology is an essential part of modern manufacturing technologies, but the basic theories and measurement methods are no longer sufficient for today's digitized systems. The information exchange between the software components of a dimensional metrology system not only costs a great deal of money, but also causes the entire system to lose data integrity. Information Modeling for Interoperable Dimensional Metrology analyzes interoperability issues in dimensional metrology systems and describes information modeling techniques. It discusses new approaches and data models for solving interoperability problems, as well as introducing process activities, existing and emerging data models, and the key technologies of dimensional metrology systems. Written for researchers in industry and academia, as well as advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students, this book gives both an overview and an in-depth understanding of complete dimensional metrology systems. By covering in detail the theory and main content, techniques, and methods used in dimensional metrology systems, Information Modeling for Interoperable Dimensional Metrology enables readers to solve real-world dimensional measurement problems in modern dimensional metrology practices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a sequel to Information Management: The Strategic Dimension (OUP 1988), a book which was well received by managers and academics alike. In the last decade, the pervasiveness of information technology (IT) has brought about far-reaching changes in how many managers and specialists work and, indeed, in how we conceptualize the organization. The correspondence between new organizational terminology and the language of IT demonstrates this — networked, virtual and knowledge-based organizations, inter-organizational alliances, distributed organizations and groupware all being examples. For some, IT represents a solution to many organizational and operational problems (including the advocates of Business Process Re-engineering) and the most likely way to improve business performance and gain competitive advantage. At the same time, for many managers and organizations the reality is that the risks, costs, false trails and difficulties seem to outweigh any immediate tangible advantage. The purpose of this book is to take an informed, dispassionate and constructive look at the challenges of IT and to offer insight, analysis and guidance on the ever changing IT environment, focusing in particular on managerial and organizational issues. These include centralization versus decentralization, relations between users and specialists, managing the IS function, outsourcing versus internal capabilities, project management and systems implementation, and an assessment of Business Process Re-engineering at both the conceptual and empirical level. Section 1 looks at some of the organizational horizons made possible by information technology; the next section tackles some of the challenges that face organizations who want to exploit IT in innovative and strategic ways. Section 3 examines some of the eternal questions of how to organize the IS function. In Section Four the contributors look at various aspects of project management and systems implementation. The next section examines some contemporary management questions on the agendas of Chief Information officers and their IS departments. Michael Earl's postscript integrates the volume through the framework of 'organizational fit'. The book provides an authoritative overview and helpful diagnostics of current information management challenges by some of the leading information systems researchers in Europe and the USA. The volume will be essential reading for management students, consultants, and senior IT professionals. Book excerpt: One of the most important texts of modern times, Herbert Marcuse's analysis and image of a one-dimensional man in a one-dimensional society has shaped many young radicals' way of seeing and experiencing life. Published in 1964, it fast became an ideological bible for the emergent New Left. As Douglas Kellner notes in his introduction, Marcuse's greatest work was a 'damning indictment of contemporary Western societies, capitalist and communist.' Yet it also expressed the hopes of a radical philosopher that human freedom and happiness could be greatly expanded beyond the regimented thought and behaviour prevalent in established society. For those who held the reigns of power Marcuse's call to arms threatened civilization to its very core. For many others however, it represented a freedom hitherto unimaginable.

Book excerpt: In this monograph, we study the problem of high-dimensional indexing and systematically introduce two efficient index structures: one for range queries and the other for similarity queries. Extensive experiments and comparison studies are conducted to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed indexing methods. Many new database applications, such as multimedia databases or stock price information systems, transform important features or properties of data objects into high-dimensional points. Searching for objects based on these features is thus a search of points in this feature space. To support efficient retrieval in such high-dimensional databases, indexes are required to prune the search space. Indexes for low-dimensional databases are well studied, whereas most of these application specific indexes are not scaleable with the number of dimensions, and they are not designed to support similarity searches and high-dimensional joins.

Person 3: "I need to think about the problem before I can offer you a solution." Person 4: "I'm going to consider this problem from every angle." Asked to solve the same problem, four people responded four different ways. If you were their manager, your challenge would be to help each individual find an effective, timely solution to the problem. Most managers would do what comes naturally and use the managerial style that is their "first dimension." This will work some of the time - but not all the time. One managerial style can't help people with four different working styles make the most of their different strengths and overcome their different limitations and roadblocks. In managing others, one style does not fit all. The 4-Dimensional Manager will help you learn to manage different people in the best ways. Through a simple yet powerful self-discovery tool called DiSC, you can become a 4-dimensional manager, able to manage anyone, anywhere, anytime. Discover your usual managerial style: Dominance, Influence, Supportiveness, or Conscientiousness Read the work styles of the people you manage Improve communication and reduce destructive conflict Find out how the style of your organization affects you and those you manage Whether or not you have the formal title of manager, if you provide work direction to others, this book will answer pressing questions you have every day, such as: When I delegate, how much information should I give, and when and how should I follow up? How can I increase this person's motivation? What kind of compliment or reward would this person most value? How can I give feedback so it will be understood, accepted, and effective? The 4-Dimensional Manager provides fascinating insights into individual work styles, practical suggestions, checklists and planners, and a research-based DiSC discovery tool.

The book, while historical in character, provides an interpretation of change, and identifies, describes and interprets temporal sequences. The primary aim of this study is to trace the evolution of public policy in the United States in the broad area of labor-management relations. The attempts of organized labor and management groups to influence public policy through the political process are examined, with a more detailed examination of labor and management political struggles in Massachusetts. This title will be of interest to students of political and labor history.

Book excerpt: Data Quality: The Accuracy Dimension is about assessing the quality of corporate data and improving its accuracy using the data profiling method. Corporate data is increasingly important as companies continue to find new ways to use it. Likewise, improving the accuracy of data in information systems is fast becoming a major goal as companies realize how much it affects their bottom line. Data profiling is a new technology that supports and enhances the accuracy of databases throughout major IT shops. Jack Olson explains data profiling and shows how it fits into the larger picture of data quality. * Provides an accessible, enjoyable introduction to the subject of data accuracy, peppered with real-world anecdotes. * Provides a framework for data profiling with a discussion of analytical tools appropriate for assessing data accuracy. * Is written by one of the original developers of data profiling technology. * Is a must-read for any data management staff, IT management staff, and CIOs of companies with data assets.
