This book was released on 2001 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years there has been an increasing interest in problems involving closed form evaluations of (and representations of the Riemann Zeta function at positive integer arguments as) various families of series associated with the Riemann Zeta function ((s), the Hurwitz Zeta function ((s,a), and their such extensions and generalizations as (for example) Lerch's transcendent (or the Hurwitz-Lerch Zeta function) iI>(z, s, a). Some of these developments have apparently stemmed from an over two-century-old theorem of Christian Goldbach (1690-1764), which was stated in a letter dated 1729 from Goldbach to Daniel Bernoulli (1700-1782), from recent rediscoveries of a fairly rapidly convergent series representation for ((3), which is actually contained in a 1772 paper by Leonhard Euler (1707-1783), and from another known series representation for ((3), which was used by Roger Apery (1916-1994) in 1978 in his celebrated proof of the irrationality of ((3). This book is motivated essentially by the fact that the theories and applications of the various methods and techniques used in dealing with many different families of series associated with the Riemann Zeta function and its aforementioned relatives are to be found so far only"in widely scattered journal articles. Thus our systematic (and unified) presentation of these results on the evaluation and representation of the Zeta and related functions is expected to fill a conspicuous gap in the existing books dealing exclusively with these Zeta functions.

Book excerpt: Zeta and q-Zeta Functions and Associated Series and Integrals is a thoroughly revised, enlarged and updated version of Series Associated with the Zeta and Related Functions. Many of the chapters and sections of the book have been significantly modified or rewritten, and a new chapter on the theory and applications of the basic (or q-) extensions of various special functions is included. This book will be invaluable because it covers not only detailed and systematic presentations of the theory and applications of the various methods and techniques used in dealing with many different classes of series and integrals associated with the Zeta and related functions, but stimulating historical accounts of a large number of problems and well-classified tables of series and integrals. - Detailed and systematic presentations of the theory and applications of the various methods and techniques used in dealing with many different classes of series and integrals associated with the Zeta and related functions

Book excerpt: This is the first introductory book on multiple zeta functions and multiple polylogarithms which are the generalizations of the Riemann zeta function and the classical polylogarithms, respectively, to the multiple variable setting. It contains all the basic concepts and the important properties of these functions and their special values. This book is aimed at graduate students, mathematicians and physicists who are interested in this current active area of research. The book will provide a detailed and comprehensive introduction to these objects, their fascinating properties and interesting relations to other mathematical subjects, and various generalizations such as their q-analogs and their finite versions (by taking partial sums modulo suitable prime powers). Historical notes and exercises are provided at the end of each chapter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lerch zeta-function is the first monograph on this topic, which is a generalization of the classic Riemann, and Hurwitz zeta-functions. Although analytic results have been presented previously in various monographs on zeta-functions, this is the first book containing both analytic and probability theory of Lerch zeta-functions. The book starts with classical analytical theory (Euler gamma-functions, functional equation, mean square). The majority of the presented results are new: on approximate functional equations and its applications and on zero distribution (zero-free regions, number of nontrivial zeros etc). Special attention is given to limit theorems in the sense of the weak convergence of probability measures for the Lerch zeta-function. From limit theorems in the space of analytic functions the universitality and functional independence is derived. In this respect the book continues the research of the first author presented in the monograph Limit Theorems for the Riemann zeta-function. This book will be useful to researchers and graduate students working in analytic and probabilistic number theory, and can also be used as a textbook for postgraduate students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About ten years ago, the handful of peculiar numerical diogarithmic identities, known since the time of Euler and Landen, gave rise to new discoveries concerning cyclotomic equations and related polylogarithmic ladders. These discoveries were made mostly by the methods of classical analysis, with help from machine computation. About the same time, starting with Bloch's studies on the application of the dilogarithm in algebraic K-theory and algebraic geometry, many important discoveries were made in diverse areas. This book seeks to provide a synthesis of these two streams of thought. In addition to an account of ladders and their association with functional equations, the chapters include applications to volume calculations in Lobatchevsky geometry, relations to partition theory, connections with Clausen's function, new functional equations, and applications to K-theory and other branches of abstract algebra. This rapidly-expanding field is brought up to date with two appendices, and the book concludes with an extensive bibliography of recent publications. About two-thirds of the material is accessible to mathematicians and scientists in many areas, while the remainder requires more specialized background in abstract algebra.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subjects treated in this book have been especially chosen to represent a bridge connecting the content of a first course on the elementary theory of analytic functions with a rigorous treatment of some of the most important special functions: the Euler gamma function, the Gauss hypergeometric function, and the Kummer confluent hypergeometric function. Such special functions are indispensable tools in "higher calculus" and are frequently encountered in almost all branches of pure and applied mathematics. The only knowledge assumed on the part of the reader is an understanding of basic concepts to the level of an elementary course covering the residue theorem, Cauchy's integral formula, the Taylor and Laurent series expansions, poles and essential singularities, branch points, etc. The book addresses the needs of advanced undergraduate and graduate students in mathematics or physics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Table of Integrals, Series, and Products provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of integrals, series, and products. This book provides a comprehensive table of integrals. Organized into 17 chapters, this book begins with an overview of elementary functions and discusses the power of binomials, the exponential function, the logarithm, the hyperbolic function, and the inverse trigonometric function. This text then presents some basic results on vector operators and coordinate systems that are likely to be useful during the formulation of many problems. Other chapters consider inequalities that range from basic algebraic and functional inequalities to integral inequalities and fundamental oscillation and comparison theorems for ordinary differential equations. This book discusses as well the important part played by integral transforms. The final chapter deals with Fourier and Laplace transforms that provides so much information about other integrals. This book is a valuable resource for mathematicians, engineers, scientists, and research workers.

This book was released on 1992-10-28 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is an introduction to quantum mechanics at a level suitable for the second year in a European university (junior or senior year in an American college). The matrix formulation of quantum mechanics is emphasized throughout, and the student is introduced to Dirac notation from the start. A number of major examples illustrate the workings of quantum mechanics. Several of these examples are taken from solid state physics, with the purpose of showing that quantum mechanics forms the common basis for understanding atoms, molecules and condensed matter. The book contains an introductory chapter which puts the concepts of quantum mechanics into a historical framework. The solid-state applications discussed in this text include the quantum Hall effect, spin waves, quantum wells and energy bands. Other examples feature the two-dimensional harmonic oscillator, coherent states, two-electron atoms, the ammonia molecule and the chemical bond. A large number of homework problems are included.
