Book excerpt: This book explores the use of digital humanities (DH) to understand, interpret, and annotate the poetics of Indian literary and cultural texts, which circulate in digital forms — in manuscripts — and as oral or musical performance. Drawing on the linguistic, cultural, historical, social, and geographic diversity of Indian texts and contexts, it foregrounds the use of digital technologies — including minimal computing, novel digital humanities research and teaching methodologies, critical archive generation and maintenance — for explicating poetics of Indian literatures and generating scholarly digital resources which will facilitate comparative readings. With contributions from DH scholars and practitioners from across India, the United States, the United Kingdom, and more, this book will be a key intervention for scholars and researchers of literature and literary theory, DH, media studies, and South Asian Studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when many of the world's languages are at risk of extinction, the imperative to document, analyse and teach them before time runs out is very great. At this critical time new technologies, such as visual and aural archiving, digitisation of textual resources, electronic mapping and social media, have the potential to play an integral role in language maintenance and revitalisation. Drawing on studies of endangered languages from around the world - Europe, Asia, Africa and North and South America - this volume considers how these new resources might best be applied, and the problems that they can bring. It also re-assesses more traditional techniques of documentation in light of new technologies and works towards achieving a practicable synthesis of old and new methodologies. This accessible volume will be of interest to researchers in language endangerment, language typology and linguistic anthropology, and to community members working in native language maintenance.

It explores the role of language in colonial attempts to establish hegemony, the play of power, and the anxieties in the nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century India. The essays in the volume discuss language policy, debates and pedagogy as well as larger overarching questions such as identity, nationhood and sub-nationhood. The work also looks at the socio-cultural and economic factors that shaped the writing and publishing of textbooks, dictionaries and determined the direction of language teaching, specifically, of English language teaching. Drawing on a variety of archival sources — policy documents, books, periodicals — this book will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of linguistics, language teaching, cultural studies and modern Indian history.

Book excerpt: This book is a useful guide for the teaching fraternity, administrators and education technology professionals to make good use of AI across outcome-based technical education (OBTE) ecosystem and infuse innovations and affordable digital technologies to traditional pedagogic processes to make teaching-learning more independent of human factor (teacher/student quality), time and place and at the same time more impactful and enjoyable for the learners. Providing access to the digital media and learning tools (even to the extent of mobile apps) to the students would allow them to keep pace with innovations in learning technologies, learn according to their own pace and improve their understanding level and have instantaneous feedback and evaluation. The book explores these new challenges and scope of using computational intelligence in educational technology. The book also addresses how based on the data collected from the outcome of conventional educational system, intelligent diagnostic and feedback system is developed which will change the teaching strategies and corresponding teaching-learning process. The book covers a wider framework of digital pedagogy and its intelligent applications on various sectors of education system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the Study of Indian Languages: With Words, Phrases and Sentences to Be Collected During the past ten years students of Indian languages have rapidly multiplied. When the author of this volume began the exploration of the Colorado River of the West under the auspices of the Smithsonian Institution, Professor Henry, as its secretary, urgently recommended a study of the Indians of that country, although the work was organized primarily as a geographic and geological survey. The region was practically unknown to white men, and the Indians found therein were less modified by the influences of civilization than any others of the United States. The only inhabitants of the country being Indians, the members of the survey were thrown the more directly into contact with them, as their services were needed in finding trails, fords, passes, and watering places. Under these circumstances favorable opportunities were utilized, and from time to time since then this work has gradually expanded until a Bureau of Ethnology, under the direction of the Smithsonian Institution, has been organized by law. In the mean time, through the efforts of this organization in its various forms many persons have been enlisted in the study of North American anthropology and the philologic branch has received special attention. To intelligently prosecute linguistic research it was found necessary to make a summary of what had previously been done in this field, and a classification of the linguistic stocks of North America was undertaken. In the progress of this work vocabularies and grammars from various sources have been studied and compared with the large amount of matter pouring in from the assistants and collaborators with the Bureau. Book excerpt: In an era marked by rapid technological progress, libraries find themselves at a crossroads grappling with the challenges posed by an information-rich yet digitally fragmented landscape. The conventional role of libraries, once the steadfast guardians of knowledge, faces disruption as we navigate through a sea of information abundance. This conundrum gives rise to a critical issue - how can libraries adapt and thrive in an environment dominated by the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence (AI)? AI-Assisted Library Reconstruction is a compelling solution that promises to breathe new life into these institutions, making them more dynamic, accessible, and efficient in the face of unprecedented challenges. This book addresses the pressing issues faced by libraries in the age of information technology. It doesn't merely scratch the surface; it delves deep into the heart of the matter, providing an exploration of the integration of artificial intelligence in the reconstruction and revitalization of libraries. Through an in-depth examination of technologies, methodologies, and applications, it offers a guide for libraries to not only survive but thrive in this technologically charged landscape.
