Diese Veränderungsprozesse wirken sich auf viele Bereiche unseres Lebens und somit auch auf die Sozialisation aus. Seit einiger Zeit sind durch einen der Veränderungsprozesse, die Digitalisierung, ebenfalls die digitalen Medien in unser Leben getreten. Diese stellen Herausforderungen an die Sozialisationsforschung und die Sozialisationsinstanzen. Die Rolle der Medien im Sozialisationsprozess würden unterschiedlich aufgefasst werden. Für die einen seien die digitalen Medien nur eine neue Sozialisationsinstanz, der aber weiter nicht viel Bedeutung zukomme, andere beharren auf den festen Platz der digitalen Medien im Sozialisationsprozess von Heranwachsenden. Daher stellen sich fragen wie "Wie vollzieht sich die Sozialisation mit und über Medien unter aktuellen gesellschaftlichen und medialen Bedingungen?" und "Welche Herausforderungen und Potentiale für kulturelles Lernen sind damit verbunden?"

Die Nutzung von digitalen Medien steigt stetig an und Kinder beschäftigen sich heutzutage lieber mit dem Fernseher anstatt Bücher zu lesen. In dieser Arbeit beziehen wir uns auf die drei Leitmedien der Kinder und Jugendlichen: dem Fernseher, gefolgt vom Handy, welches besonders bei den Mädchen beliebt ist und dem Computer samt Internet, welchen die Jungen bevorzugen. In den ersten Schritten dieser Ausarbeitung, befassen wir uns theoretisch mit den Begriffen der Selbst- und Fremdsozialisation und versuchen, sie zu definieren. Darauf folgt die kritische Auseinandersetzung verschiedener Sozialisationsforscher, da keine Einigung über eine feste Definition der oben genannten Begriffe herrscht. Es folgen die Chancen und Risiken der drei Leitmedien in der Mediensozialisation für den Sozialisanten, bevor wir zum Schluss einen Ausblick in Bezug auf Fremd- und Selbstsozialisation, sowohl auf der individuellen wie auch institutionellen Ebene durch Förderprogramme darstellen.

Jahrhunderts in der Lage, auch über große Entfernungen mit Menschen zu kommunizieren. Der Rundfunk macht es möglich, viele Menschen zeitgleich zu erreichen und sie zu informieren und unterhalten. Das Internet, als bahnbrechende Erfindung des 20. Jahrhundert, vereint und erweitert alle diese Funktionen. So werden neue Medien oft sehr schnell durch ihren zusätzlichen Nutzen in Gesellschaften integriert. Die weltweite Vernetzung und die damit verbundene Fähigkeit, zu jeder Zeit überall mit jedem kommunizieren zu können, prägt das heutige Zeitalter so sehr, dass die gegenwärtige gesellschaftliche Epoche oft als "Informationszeitalter" betitelt wird. Die Beziehung zwischen Medien und Menschen ist dabei wechselseitiger Natur, da die Menschen einerseits Art und Inhalt der Medien bestimmen, anderseits jedoch von Form und Inhalt der Medien selbst beeinflusst werden. Hierbei ist der Einfluss von Medien dermaßen ausschlaggebend, dass sich Veränderungen im Kommunikationsverhalten sowohl auf das gesamte soziale Zusammenleben, als auch auf die einzelnen Individuen auswirken.
