Book excerpt: Because soil erosion and deposition have negative repercussions on military preparedness and the environment, the Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) has funded efforts to develop geographic information system (GIS) tools and methods to enhance the accuracy, spatial prediction, and visual representation of erosion and deposition on military lands. During Fiscal Year 1997, the CASC2D model was modified to include an upland erosion algorithm. The modified model produced accurate runoff hydrographs, but fell short in predicting sediment discharge. Part of the inaccuracy is attributable to channel erosion not taken into account by the current CASC2D model. The Unit Stream Power Erosion and Deposition (USPED) model was enhanced to include tangential curvature. The modification greatly improves the accuracy of erosion and deposition predictions in areas of convergent slopes. The process-based SIMulated Water Erosion (SIMWE) model was used to investigate the effects of rainfall excess, surface roughness, critical shear stress, detachment capacity, and transport capacity on erosion and deposition. Results of initial investigations conducted to determine if the SIMWE model could be used to predict the consequences of common erosion and sediment control practices were promising. Various GIS tools were developed to help in processing and visualization of distributed data.

Book excerpt: A digital elevation model (DEM) is a digital representation of ground surface topography or terrain. It is also widely known as a digital terrain model (DTM). A DEM can be represented as a raster (a grid of squares) or as a vector based triangular irregular network (TIN). DEMs are commonly built using remote sensing techniques, but they may also be built from land surveying. DEMs are used often in geographic information systems, and are the most common basis for digitally-produced relief maps. The terrain surface can be described as compromising of two different elements; random and systematic. The random (stochastic) elements are the continuous surfaces with continuously varying relief. It would take an endless number of points to describe exactly the random terrain shapes, but these can be described in practice with a network of point. It is usual to use a network that creates sloping triangles or regular quadrants. This book examines how the methods and data sources used to generate DEMs and calculate land surface parameters have changed over the past 25 years. The primary goal is to describe the state-of-the-art for a typical digital terrain modeling workflow that starts with data capture, continues with data preprocessing and DEM generation, and concludes with the calculation of one or more primary and secondary land surface parameters. Taken as a whole, this book covers the basic theory behind the methods, the instrumentation, analysis and interpretation that are embedded in the modern digital terrain modeling workflow, the strengths and weaknesses of the various methods that the terrain analyst must choose among, typical applications of the results emanating from these terrain modeling workflows, and future directions. This book is intended for researchers and practitioners who wish to use DEMs, land surface parameters, land surface objects and landforms in environmental projects. Thus, remedial soil and land conservation plans are vitally important to stabilize erosion and use the land more safely for Army activities while complying with environmental regulations and standards. The channel-hillslope integrated landscape development (CHILD) model is a dynamic, physically based, spatially distributed numerical framework for modeling soil erosion and landscape evolution, originally developed at MIT. Potential uses of CHILD include understanding the sensitivity of earth surface to changes in climate, land cover conditions and anthropogenic disturbances. In this paper, we present recent advances in the CHILD model with example numerical simulations. These are the effects of vegetation-erosion coupling on the short and long-term response of erosion rates and landscape topography, and modeling gully development by plunge-pool erosion at the gully head and widening by bank failures. CHILD simulations using a dynamic plant growth component show vegetation loss as an important factor accelerating erosion rates in decadal time scales. Over the long term, vegetation may change the dominant erosion process on the landscape, create episodicity in the sediment yields, and alter the visual appearance of landforms. Landscapes modeled using the new gully erosion module in CHILD produce landforms that compare well with the observed gullies in the Army training areas in Fort Carson and Pinon Canyon Maneuver Sites in Colorado. These results show potential applicability of the model for short and long-term land management purposes in the army lands.

Such tasks involve modeling of landscape processes, simulation of impact of human activities on these processes and optimization of preventive measures aimed at creating sustainable landscapes. A typical example of interaction between landscape processes and human activity is water erosion, a natural process which can be accelerated or greatly reduced by human intervention. In our implementation, the underlying 2D water and sediment transport equations are solved within approximate diffusive wave hydrologic and detachment/transport capacity models using stochastic methods (Monte Carlo). The methods employ distributed input parameters and enable us to simulate the impact of complex terrain, various soils and land cover changes on the spatial distribution of erosion and deposition. The presented approach together with land use optimization scenario is illustrated by an application to an experimental farm in Germany, carried out within 3D dynamic GIS environment.

These impacts generally result in a loss of vegetative cover and increased watershed runoff and rate depending on vehicle speed, turning radius, and soil moisture content. Unless adequately monitored or mitigated, this increased runoff can lead to excessive soil erosion and gully formation. Past studies have revealed that these gullies can impact water quality from excessive erosion and create concerns regarding soldier safety. In order to better understand how gullies form and evolve overtime on military installations, a study is being conducted at Fort Riley, KS. In 2010, approximately forty gullies were identified, assessed, and measured using common erosion monitoring and surveying techniques. These gully locations, and any newly formed gullies, were remeasured using these same methods in 2012 to determine the rate of growth for each site with respect to width, depth, and headcut. Of fifty-nine gullies total, twenty one were initially included in this study. Upon further analysis including the utilization of watershed characteristics and land management techniques, eleven of the 21 utilized gullies were deemed appropriate to include in predictive assessment, as these eleven systems exhibited singular headcut migration. Multiple Regression Analysis was utilized to produce predictive equations for Headcut Growth. This equation [Headcut Growth = 0.666 + 0.137(Watershed Slope) -- 0.478(Training Intensity) + 0.757(log[Watershed Area]) -- 0.278(Drainage Density) -- 0.0138(Above Ground Biomass Change) + 0.187(Burning Frequency] resulted in a model relationship of approximately 90%, with Watershed Slope being the most significant variable when an output Headcut Growth was reached.
