Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From an insider, the forty-year saga of the rise and fall of Digital Equipment Corporation, one of the pioneering companies of the computer age. Digital Equipment Corporation created the minicomputer, networking, the concept of distributed computing, speech recognition, and other major innovations. It was the number-two computer maker behind IBM. Yet it ultimately failed as a business and was sold to Compaq Corporation. What happened? Edgar Schein consulted to DEC throughout its history and so had unparalleled access to all the major players, and an inside view of all the major events. He shows how the unique organizational culture established by DEC's founder, Ken Olsen, gave the company important competitive advantages in its early years, but later became a hindrance and ultimately led to its downfall. Coauthors Schein, Kampas, DeLisi, and Sonduck explain in detail how a particular culture can become so embedded that an organization is unable to adapt to changing circumstances even though it sees the need very clearly. The essential elements of DEC’s culture are still visible in many other organizations today, and most former employees are so positive about their days at DEC that they attempt to reproduce its culture in their current work situations. In the era of post-dotcom meltdown, raging debate about companies “built to last” vs. “built to sell,” and more entrepreneurial startups than ever, the rise and fall of DEC is the ultimate case study.

Book excerpt: As part of the NSF's EXPRES project, the authors investigated ways to interchange multi-media documents among diverse systems. Their investigations led to an analysis and implementation of multi-media document format translation in general, and of the ODA standard in particular. ODA, Office Document Architecture, is a new ISO and CCITT international standard for representing multi- media documents. The results of their investigations are presented in this book. The book contains overview information about multi-media document architecture and formats, an introduction to ODA, detailed technical specifications on how to use ODA for multi-media document format translation, and the authors' experiences in implementing and using ODA. The book also contains a complete user manual for the authors' publically available ODA software: tool kits for manipulating ODA and raster formats, tools for examining ODA documents and sample translators between ODA and several other multi-media formats. This book provides comprehensive information about ODA for a large audience. Planners can get basic information about using ODA for interoperation of multi-media systems. Researchers receive detailed discussions about the advantages and problems of using ODA for document representation, format translation and archival storage. System designers can use the technical descriptions of translators and tools in specifying their own. System builders can easily obtain the software as a basis for prototyping and investigating their own ODA implementations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intended for a first course in performance evaluation, this is a self-contained treatment covering all aspects of queuing theory. It starts by introducing readers to the terminology and usefulness of queueing theory and continues by considering Markovian queues in equilibrium, Littles law, reversibility, transient analysis, and computation, plus the M/G/1 queuing system. It then moves on to cover networks of queues, and concludes with techniques for numerical solutions, a discussion of the PANACEA technique, discrete time queueing systems and simulation, and stochastic Petri networks. The whole is backed by case studies of distributed queueing networks arising in industrial applications. This third edition includes a new chapter on self-similar traffic, many new problems, and solutions for many exercises.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is "digital telephony"? To the authors, the term digital telephony de notes the technology used to provide a completely digital point-to-point voice communication system from end to end. This implies the use of digital technol ogy from one end instrument through the transmission facilities and switching centers to another end instrument. Digital telephony has become possible only because of the recent and ongoing surge of semiconductor developments allowing microminiaturization and high reliability along with reduced costs. This book deals with both the future and the present. Thus, the first chapter is entitled, "A Network in Transition." As baselines, Chapters 2, 3, and 10 provide the reader with the present status of telephone technology in terms of voice digitization as well as switching principles. The book is an outgrowth of the authors' continuing engineering education course, "Digital Telephony," which they have taught since January, 1980, to attendees from business, industry, government, common carriers, and tele phony equipment manufacturers. These attendees come from a wide variety of educational backgrounds. but generally have the equivalent of at least a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. The book has been written to provide both the engineering student and the practicing engineer a working knowledge of the principles of present and future voice communication systems based upon the use of the public switched network. Problems or discussion questions have been included at the ends of the chapters to facilitate the book's use as a senior level or first year graduate level course text.

This book was released on 2000-05-31 with total page 788 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This millennium will see the increased use of parallel computing technologies at all levels of mainstream computing. Most computer hardware will use these technologies to achieve higher computing speeds, high speed access to very large distributed databases and greater flexibility through heterogeneous computing. These developments can be expected to result in the extended use of all types of parallel computers in virtually all areas of human endeavour. Compute-intensive problems in emerging areas such as financial modelling and multimedia systems, in addition to traditional application areas of parallel computing such as scientific computing and simulation, will stimulate the developments. Parallel computing as a field of scientific research and development will move from a niche concentrating on solving compute-intensive scientific and engineering problems to become one of the fundamental computing technologies. This book gives a retrospective view of what has been achieved in the parallel computing field during the past three decades, as well as a prospective view of expected future developments./a
