Download or read book Experimental Techniques in Mineral and Rock Physics written by Robert C. Liebermann and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge of the relation between sonic velocity in sediments and rock lithology is one of the keys to interpreting data from seismic sections or from acoustic logs of sedimentary sequences. Reliable correlations of rock velocity with other petrophysical parameters, such as porosity or density, are essential for calculating impedance models for synthetic seismic sections (BIDDLE et al. , 1992; CAMPBELL and STAFLEU, 1992) or identifying the origin of reflectivity on seismic lines (SELLAMI et al. , 1990; CHRISTENSEN and SZYMANSKI, 1991). Velocity is thus an important parameter for correlating lithological with geophysical data. Recent studies have increased our understanding of elastic rock properties in siliciclastic or shaly sediments. The causes for variations in velocity have been investigated for siliciclastic rocks (VERNIK and NUR, 1992), mixed carbonate siliciclastic sediments (CHRISTENSEN and SZYMANSKI, 1991), synthetic sand-clay mixtures (MARION et aI. , 1992) or claystones (JAPSEN, 1993). The concepts derived from these studies are however only partly applicable in pure carbonates. Carbon ates do not have large compositional variations that are, as is the case in the other sedimentary rocks, responsible for velocity contrasts. Pure carbonates are character ized by the lack of any clay or siliciclastic content, but are mostly produced and deposited on the top or on the slope of isolated or detached carbonate platforms, that have no hinterland as a source of terrigeneous material (WILSON, 1975; EBERLI, 1991).

Book Synopsis Carbonate Reservoir Rocks by : Ksenia I. Bagrintseva
Download or read book Carbonate Reservoir Rocks written by Ksenia I. Bagrintseva and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-07-29 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the world’s energy still comes from fossil fuels, and there are still many strides being made in the efficiency and cost effectiveness of extracting these important and increasingly more elusive natural resources. This is only possible if the nature of the emergence, evolution, and parameter estimation of high grade reservoir rocks at great depths is known and a theory of their forecast is developed. Over 60 percent of world oil production is currently associated with carbonate reservoir rocks. The exploration, appraisal and development of these fields are significantly complicated by a number of factors. These factors include the structural complexity of the carbonate complexes, variability of the reservoir rock types and properties within a particular deposit, many unknowns in the evaluation of fracturing and its spatial variability, and the preservation of the reservoir rock qualities with depth. The main objective of most studies is discovering patterns in the reservoir rock property changes of carbonate deposits of different genesis, composition and age. A short list of the unsolved issues includes: the role of facies environment in the carbonate formation; the major geologic factors affecting the formation of high-capacity reservoir rocks and preservation of their properties; recommendations as to the use of the new techniques in studies of the structural parameters; and establishing a correlation between the major evaluation parameters. The focus of this volume is to show the scientific and engineering community a revolutionary process. The author perfected an earlier developed methodology in studies of the void space structure (Bagrintseva’s method, 1982). This methodology is based on carbonate rock saturation with luminophore and on special techniques in processing of photographs made under UV light. The luminophore technique was combined with the raster electron microscopy and its variation, the studies under the cathode luminescence regime. This combination enabled a more detailed study of the reservoir void space, the nonuniformity in the open fracture evolution, their morphology, length and variability of openness. Over recent years these techniques have found wide application. Useful for the veteran engineer or scientist and the student alike, this book is a must-have for any geologist, engineer, or student working in the field of upstream petroleum engineering.
Book Synopsis Using Digital Rock Analysis to Estimate Flow Properties of Stress-Sensitive Rocks by : Faras Al Balushi
Download or read book Using Digital Rock Analysis to Estimate Flow Properties of Stress-Sensitive Rocks written by Faras Al Balushi and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many formations, petrophysical properties such as porosity and permeability evolve as a result of deformations caused by changes in the stress field, which could be due to injection, production or other causes. It is notable that changes in these properties like the nature of stress would be a continuous change so sporadic measurement at few stress points may not be enough to describe the whole scenario. Empirical models derived experimentally are commonly used to describe the response of absolute permeability to changes in the effective stress components. However, these models are limited to few stress components such as uniaxial stress and overburden pressure and few types of formations. Thus, quantifying and understanding the changes in absolute permeability due to changes in different combinations of effective stress components in a fast and cost-efficient manner is desired. In this study, we present a practical workflow to characterize and estimate stress-dependent permeability under any arbitrary stress configuration. An equation of state is proposed to relate the change in rock permeability due to changes in effective stress components only though the three independent strain invariants. In this study, digital rock physics, finite element analysis, and Lattice Boltzmann Methods were utilized to provide a fast estimation of the rock permeability using micro-Computed Tomography images without the need for repetitive laboratory experiments that are costly and laborious. We implemented the workflow on a high and a low permeability sandstone samples. The results show that absolute permeability decreases nonlinearly with increasing strain invariants. In addition, absolute permeability was found to be more stress-sensitive in the sample with low initial permeability. Understanding the variation in absolute permeability influenced by deformation of the microstructure due to changes in effective stress tensor assists in improving the productivity and injectivity in many subsurface engineering problems.

Book Synopsis Carbonate Reservoir Characterization by : F. Jerry Lucia
Download or read book Carbonate Reservoir Characterization written by F. Jerry Lucia and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-11-30 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: F. Jerry Lucia, working in America’s main oil-rich state, has produced a work that goes after one of the holy grails of oil prospecting. One main target in petroleum recovery is the description of the three-dimensional distribution of petrophysical properties on the interwell scale in carbonate reservoirs. Doing so would improve performance predictions by means of fluid-flow computer simulations. Lucia’s book focuses on the improvement of geological, petrophysical, and geostatistical methods, describes the basic petrophysical properties, important geology parameters, and rock fabrics from cores, and discusses their spatial distribution. A closing chapter deals with reservoir models as an input into flow simulators.
