Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "The Digital Optical Computing Program within the National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center for Optoelectronic Computing Systems has as its specific goal research on optical computing architectures suitable for use at the highest possible speeds. The program can be targeted toward exploiting the time domain because other programs in the Center are pursuing research on parallel optical systems, exploiting optical interconnection and optical devices and materials. Using a general purpose computing architecture as the focus, we are developing design techniques, tools and architectures for operation at the speed of light limit. Experimental work is being done with the somewhat low speed components currently available but with architectures which will scale up in speed as faster devices are developed. The design algorithms and tools developed for a general purpose, stored program computer are being applied to other systems such as optically controlled optical communications networks."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Currently OptiComp Corporation is completing construction of the first 32-bit general purpose digital optical computer. This effort is sponsored jointly by the Office of Naval Research (ONR), Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), NASA space station and the Rome Air Development Center (RADC/USAF). OptiComp has contracted Harris Corporation of Mellbourne, FL to build and deliver the 64 channel acousto-optic spatial light modulators, Spectra Diode Laboratories of San Jose, CA to build and deliver the 8 element index guided laser diode bars capable of producing excess of one watt TE00 at 830nm, Optical Research Associates (ORA) in Pasadena, CA to optimize the optical interconnects, and GE of Vaudreuil, Quebec to develop a 128 element high speed APD array. This paper describes how these components are integrated to construct a general purpose 32-bit Digital Optical Computer (DOC II). The architecture allows the emulation of any digital instruction set (SUN RISC was chosen because of its wide utilization).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume surveys the entire field of optical computing. The emphasis is on breadth of coverage. The book is descriptive, the authors minimize the use of mathematics, and it is therefore most suitable for those who require an overall view of what is going on in this field. A detailed comparison is given of the capabilities of electronics and optics, and the degree to which these capabilities have been achieved is indicated. Other areas of focus include optical computing architectures, components and technologies, optical interconnects, and optical neural nets. Approximately 300 references to key works in the field are included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical Computing Hardware provides information pertinent to the advances in the development of optical computing hardware. This book discusses the two application areas, namely, high-performance computing and high-throughput photonic switching. Organized into 11 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the requirements on hardware from s system perspective. This text then presents the self-electro-optic-effect devices (SPEED), the vertical-cavity-surface- emitting microlasers (VCSEL), and the vertical-to-surface transmission electrophotonic device (VSTEP). Other chapters consider the fundamental principles of the devices and their operation either as logic devices or for optical interconnection applications. This book discusses as well the planar optical microlens as an example of a refractive microlens of the gradient-index type and explains the diffractive optical elements. The final chapter describes a method for writing and reading optically in parallel from a three-dimensional matrix by means of two-photon interaction in photochromic organic materials. This book is a valuable resource for engineers, scientists, and researchers.

Book excerpt: Optical Processing and Computing is a collection of research from the USA, Canada, Russia, and Poland on the developments in the fields of digital optical computing and analog optical processing. This book is organized into 15 chapters and begins with an overview of the hierarchy of interconnect problems. Some chapters deal with the fundamental limitations and capabilities of optics in relation to interconnections, switching, computing, materials, and devices. Other chapters explore the architectures, technology, and applications of the field. The topics range from promising areas in the early stages of development, such as nonlinear effects in fibers that could bring about the optical transistor, to developments in areas ready for technology, such as the production of optical kinoforms, an important type of computer-generated optical component. With a strong focus on the fundamental aspects of the field, this book is of interest to specialists, researchers, and students who need a broad coverage of the principles of optical computing and of the underlying physics.

Book excerpt: This book is intended for readers desiring a comprehensive analysis of the latest developments in widegap II-VI materials research for opto-electronic applications and basic insight into the fundamental underlying principles. Therefore, it is hoped that this book will serve two purposes. Firstly, to educate newcomers to this exciting area of physics and technology and, secondly, to provide specialists with useful references and new insights in related areas of II-VI materials research. The motivation for preparing this book originated from the need for a current review of this fertile and important field. A primary goal of this book is therefore to present an eclectic synthesis of these sometimes diverse fields of investigation. This book consists of three main sections, namely (1) Growth and Properties, (2) Materials Characterization and (3) Devices. Part One presents an overall perspective of the state of the art in the preparation of the widegap II-VI materials. Part Two concentrates on current topics pertinent to the characterization of these materials from the unique perspective of each of the authors. Part Three focuses on advances in the opto-electronic applications of these materials. The material in this section runs the gamut from addressing recent advances in device areas which date back to some of the earliest reported research in these materials, to tackling some quite new and exciting future directions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1990 International Topical Meeting on Photonic Switching was held April 12-14, 1990, in Kobe, Japan, in conjunction with the 1990 International Meet ing on Optical Computing. It was sponsored by the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers in cooperation with the IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society, the Optical Society of America, and the Japan So ciety of Applied Physics. The attendance was in excess of 340 persons, with 18 countries represented - a testimony to the current international interest in photonic switching. This book contains expanded and more detailed versions of most of the papers presented at the topical meeting. With the success of optical fibers there is an increased demand for a switch ing system that can operate directly on the light present in the fibers. The goal is to reduce the total number of optical-to-electrical and electrical-to-optical transformations as far as possible, in addition to exploiting the large spec tral and temporal bandwidth offered by such an optically transparent system.
