Book excerpt: Horticultural Therapy is ideally suited to engage veterans alienated from traditional civilian healthcare routes who present with a range of complex and challenging healthcare needs. It presents, on the surface, as a deceptively simple and accessible activity. Carried out by trained professionals, it is an evidence-based, effective and cost-effective treatment. By targeting specific client-centred goals, it is able to integrate improved individual physical, emotional, cognitive and social outcomes with broader opportunities to transition successfully into civilian society through learning a valuable skill set and a meaningful occupation. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the methods of Horticultural Therapy as applied to this unique client group. It describes the type of combat training and experiences veterans may have had, and sets out the common issues and pitfalls civilian therapists often face when working with the military. Looking to the future, it also identifies promising avenues in terms of how we may improve the treatment we offer to best serve the needs of these ex-service men and women who fight on our behalf.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Otto D. Batty received most of his education from parochial schools. His first nine years were at Bethlehem Christian School in Kennewick, Washington, graduated from Concordia College-High School in Portland, Oregon in 1956. He received his A.A. degree from Columbia Basin College in Pasco, Washington in 1969, and B.A. degree in Education from Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington in 1976. Otto majored in Social Studies with a strong emphasis in History. In 1961 while in Wyoming, Otto developed a great love for the Scripture. Over the years, he read 23 different translations and paraphrases of the Bible. He even read the Bible backwards from Revelation to Genesis. When asked why, he simply replied, "Just for fun." However, he wouldn't do it again or recommend it, saying "It was chronologically distracting." Otto has taught many Sunday School classes to both teenagers and adults. This work emerged out of those life experiences. The more Otto read the scripture the more he became excited about what he "discovered." It was quite a surprise to him to learn so many believers had never read the whole Bible through once. Filled with a hunger to encourage others to read and find the "gems" he found in the Scripture, in 1985 he wrote and taught this Bible Study with a twist. The emphasis is on "discovering the gems," not theology or doctrine. It is fast paced, fun, and simple. Its primary purpose; to encourage believers to apply Romans 10:17, "faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fourth International Conference on the History of Mathematics Education was hosted by Academy of Sciences and University of Turin (Italy). About 50 senior and junior researchers from 16 countries met for four days to talk about one topic: the history of mathematics education. In total 44 contributions were presented. The themes were Ideas, people and movements, Transmission of ideas, Teacher education, Geometry and textbooks, Textbooks – changes and origins, Curriculum and reform, Teaching in special institutions, and Teaching of geometry. In this volume you find 28 of the papers, all of them peer-reviewed. Since the first international conference on the history of mathematics education, the aim has been to develop this area of research, to attract more researchers and provide new insights that stimulate further “digging”. It is therefore very pleasing that so many new young researchers joined the conference, presenting results from ongoing or recently finished PhD projects. This makes us confident about a prosperous future of this research area as we look forward to the Fifth International Conference on the History of Mathematics Education, to be held in Utrecht, the Netherlands, in September 2017. Previous international conferences on the history of mathematics education: 2009 in Garðabær (Iceland) 2011 in Lisbon (Portugal) 2013 in Uppsala (Sweden)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of mathematics education is an interdisciplinary research area that is experiencing a significant development and this book presents recent work in this area. This book is the result of the seventh conference ICHME (International Conference on the History of Mathematics Education) that took place at Erbacher Hof, Mainz (Germany) from 19th to 23rd of September 2022. Nowadays, the history of education is of the utmost importance for assessing the general development of the educational system(s) in which mathematics education occurs. Usually, the history of education is confined to history within a given civilization, country or nation. However, the quality of the research for a given nation is enhanced when situated among various specific cases, and comparative studies provide essential tools to broaden the perspectives to an international level. Moreover, mathematics, as a school discipline, has always functioned at the crossroads between general education and professional training, thus relating its teaching history to professional working environments as well. The 24 chapters in this book reflect this wide area of research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do Rube Walberg, Mike Nagy, Kevin Millar, and Dustin Pedroia all have in common? They have all worn #15 for the Boston Red Sox. Since 1931, the Red Sox have issued 74 different numbers to more than 1,500 players. In this newly updated edition, Red Sox by the Numbers tells the story of every Red Sox player since ’31—from Bill Sweeney (the first Red Sox player to don #1) to J.T. Snow (#84, the highest numbered non-coach in Sox history). Each chapter also features a fascinating sidebar that reveals obscure players who wore certain numbers and also which numbers produced the most wins, home runs, and stolen bases in club history.
