Book excerpt: A guide to understanding the relationship between Western psychology and the contemplative sprituality of the East—and how one’s spiritual journey can be enriched by both How can we connect the spiritual realizations of Buddhism with the psychological insights of the West? In Toward a Psychology of Awakening John Welwood addresses this question with comprehensiveness and depth, building on his innovative psychospiritual approach to health, healing, and spirituality. He covers the following topics: • What can the spiritual methodologies of the East teach us about psychological health? • What issues arise when the recognition of our larger nature challenges our very conception of individual self ? • What new directions become possible when psychological work is undertaken in a spiritual context? • How does Western psychological understanding affect our approach to spirituality? Welwood's psychology of awakening brings together three major dimensions of human existence: personal, interpersonal, and suprapersonal in one overall framework of understanding and practice.

Book excerpt: Over the past fifteen years, Lebanon has witnessed a surge in contemporary art p ractices in such media as video, installation, performance, and urban interventi on. An impressive set of aesthetic strategies and a substantial body of critical discourse have emerged among a generation of artists who have presented their w ork within a once nascent and now established alternative infrastructure for cul tural production in Beirut. Yet fifteen years after the end of Lebanon's 1975-1990 civil war, much of this w ork remains intimately concerned with excavating the traumas of communal violenc e and political rupture imposed by that conflict. This thesis seeks to explore the relationship between the contemporary art pract ices that have developed in Lebanon's postwar period and the history, experience, and memory of the civil war. By delving into the work of such artists as Ziad Abillama, Walid Raad and the At las Group, the Heartland collective, and more, I argue that the civil war remain s a relevant subject for intellectual and artistic inquiry in part because its c auses and consequences have been so poorly addressed in a postwar period marked by policies of historical erasure and collective amnesia, but also in part becau se the civil war in Lebanon has become one trauma that masks many others. What these artists seek to achieve in their work is a methodology by which the v isual and material traces of the civil war may be collected, questioned, and rec onfigured for the production of new works, new meanings, and new narratives that simultaneously keep the past alive in the present and offer a creative way forw ard from the present toward a more just and stable, if also more contentious, fu ture.

Book excerpt: Fifty Key Irish Plays charts the progression of modern Irish drama from Dion Boucicault’s entry on to the global stage of the Irish diaspora to the contemporary dramas created by the experiences of the New Irish. Each chapter provides a brief plot outline along with informed analysis and, alert to the cultural and critical context of each play, an account of the key roles that they played in the developing story of Irish drama. While the core of the collection is based on the critical canon, including work by J. M. Synge, Lady Gregory, Teresa Deevy, and Brian Friel, plays such as Tom Mac Intyre’s The Great Hunger and ANU Productions’ Laundry, which illuminate routes away from the mainstream, are also included. With a focus on the development of form as well as theme, the collection guides the reader to an informed overview of Irish theatre via succinct and insightful essays by an international team of academics. This invaluable collection will be of particular interest to undergraduate students of theatre and performance studies and to lay readers looking to expand their appreciation of Irish drama.

Book excerpt: In October 1921, a delegation of the Dáil left by boat and train for London, where they were to negotiate with the British government for peace, unity and a republic. They came back with just one of those; and that peace didn't last long, as war with Britain was replaced by war with their own. Were the Irish outclassed or outgunned? Were they lied to? Did they lie to their own colleagues back in Dublin? Or did they achieve the best that could be achieved, an incremental step on the way to fuller sovereignty? The Treaty tells the story of what happened inside those negotiations, as Arthur Griffith, Michael Collins and colleagues faced off against one of the most formidable negotiating teams ever assembled, headed by David Lloyd George and with Winston Churchill often at his side. This edition is published to coincide with Fishamble's production in November 2021.

David is a man struggling to hold together his marriage when the small town he lives in is rocked by the sudden, untimely death of a local girl. As details are uncovered, rumours and talk take hold of the town, and start to force David to revisit old memories. Set in 1960s Ireland, Before Monsters Were Made tells the story of how a few small words can have a very big impact. When suspicion and old stories start to spread like a virus, how well do we know the people we trust the most? Can we ever know what goes on inside other people's lives? And do we really want to? Before Monsters Were Made is an unnerving and moving thriller about loyalty, lies and love.
