Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During a forty-year period ending in 2002, leaders of major American churches tried to unite their members, ministries, and public service in a new church they named A Church of Christ Uniting. Participating in this movement were four Methodist Churches, the Episcopal Church, the nation's largest Presbyterian Church, the United Church of Christ, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and the International Council of Community Churches. With a membership of close to twenty million, this church would have been spread throughout the nation more fully than any other church except the Roman Catholic. Leaders of the movement believed that this union would enable church members to experience their Christian life more fully. It would heal divisions that had existed since the Protestant Reformation 450 years earlier and displace the denominational system that was increasingly dysfunctional. By coming together in a new way, these churches could work more effectively at overcoming problems in American life--especially the challenges related to racism. Although the Consultation on Church Union (COCU) closed before converting its vision into a new form of the church, it had a significant effect on these churches and the nation. This is a story that needs to be remembered.

Book excerpt: "With an appreciative and sensitive hand, Joe Thomas has located and interpreted Lesslie Newbigin's theology of religious plurality and his vision for dialogue among people of diverse faiths. This book is a benchmark for all that follows." --George R. Hunsberger, Professor of Missiology, Western Theological Seminary "This study identifies and expounds the centrality of Jesus on which Bishop Newbigin based his thinking. Dr. Thomas provides a sure and insightful guide to Newbigin's thought on the finality of Jesus Christ." --The Most Reverend Dr. Eliud Wabukala, Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Kenya, Nairobi, Kenya "Professor Thomas offers here an excellent account of Lesslie Newbigin's theology of interreligious dialogue and of gospel and culture, all founded and centered firmly in Jesus Christ. This is a useful contribution to the study of Newbigin, an important ecumenical Christian statesman and theologian of the twentieth century." --Harold G. Wells, Professor Emeritus, Emmanuel College, University of Toronto "This landmark book is essential to the understanding of the nature of Christian mission in a pluralistic world. Dr. Thomas has a winsome style with penetrating insight. I cannot imagine it as anything other than the definitive benchmark work on Newbigin's theology. Accessibly written, this book will serve as a valuable resource for anyone seriously interested in the theology of interreligious dialogue." --The Rt. Rev. Dr. Bill Atwood, Bishop of the International Diocese, Anglican Church in North America "Lesslie Newbigin has much wisdom to offer Christians in the twenty-first century. Dr. Thomas has done a commendable job of keeping this legacy alive. In our peripatetic age cultures and religions interact in every sphere of life--and sometimes collide. This book provides a well-researched analysis of Newbigin's theology, and explains his approach to mission, Christian unity, and principled inter-religious dialogue." --Patricia J. Harrison, PhD (University of Queensland), Research Supervisor, London School of Theology, Middlesex University

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing body of literature about the missional church, but the word missional is often defined in competing ways with little attempt to ground it deeply in Scripture. Michael Goheen, a dynamic speaker and the coauthor of two popular texts on the biblical narrative, unpacks the missional identity of the church by tracing the role God's people are called to play in the biblical story. Goheen shows that the church's identity can be understood only when its role is articulated in the context of the whole biblical story--not just the New Testament, but the Old Testament as well. He also explores practical outworkings and implications, offering field-tested suggestions for contemporary churches.

Book excerpt: British Christianity is embedded with a deep sense history that once discovered, will start to reveal an apostolic linage traceable to the Book of Acts. With the rise of British Christianity in various parts of ancient Britain, it played a fundamental, yet pivotal role in maintaining and shaping the baptismal practice of single immersion in the name of Christ alone. At least from the time of Tertullian of Carthage as testified by the Church Historian, Eusebius of Caesarea to the acclaimed British born and first Christian Roman Emperor, Constantine who oversaw and officiated the Council of Nicea in 325 A.D, the entrance of Christianity into Britain was seen to resist Roman and Papal authority and jurisdiction, thereby minimizing any Roman influence and dominance, resulting in the excommunication of the British Church. The British Church with is religious practices became a thorn in the side of the Roman Church, but continued to exercise its religious freedoms in accordance with the apostolic message. Therefore, contained within this work is reference to an array of literature, publications and prominent figures who noted baptism in the name of Jesus only or Christ alone from within Britain since the ancient period till the present. Great Britain has been home to baptism in the name of Jesus only for centuries and hundreds of years, coupled with theological belief of the British and European people of sabellianism derivative from the New Testament with an Old Testament foundation.

Book excerpt: Lesslie Newbigin, one of the twentieth century's most important church leaders, offered insights on the church in a pluralistic world that are arguably more relevant now than when first written. This volume presents his ecclesiology to a new generation. Michael Goheen clearly articulates Newbigin's missionary understanding of the church and places it in the context of Newbigin's core theological convictions. Suitable for students as well as church leaders, this book offers readers a better understanding of the mission of the church in the world today. Foreword by N. T. Wright.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a historical assessment and balanced critique of contemporary church movements, especially in light of missional ecclesiology. An expert on Lesslie Newbigin and an expert on contemporary church models show how Newbigin's ideas have been developed and contextualized in three popular contemporary church movements: missional, emergent, and center church. In addition, the authors explain that some of Newbigin's insights have been neglected and need to be retrieved for the present day. This book calls for the recovery of the missionary nature of the church and commends church practices applicable to any congregation.
