Book excerpt: This textbook provides an introduction to changes that occur in solids such as ceramics, mainly at high temperatures, which are diffusion controlled, as well as presenting research data. Such changes are related to the kinetics of various reactions such as precipitation, oxidation and phase transformations, but are also related to some mechanical changes, such as creep. The book is composed of two parts, beginning with a look at the basics of diffusion according to Fick's Laws. Solutions of Fick’s second law for constant D, diffusion in grain boundaries and dislocations are presented along with a look at the atomistic approach for the random motion of atoms. In the second part, the author discusses diffusion in several technologically important ceramics. The ceramics selected are monolithic single phase ones, including: A12O3, SiC, MgO, ZrO2 and Si3N4. Of these, three refer to oxide ceramics (alumina, magnesia and zirconia). Carbide based ceramics are represented by the technologically very important Si-carbide and nitride based ceramics are represented by Si-nitride which has been important in high temperature ceramics and gas turbine applications. The author presents a clear, concise and relatively comprehensive treatment of diffusion in ceramics for use by those at an advanced undergraduate level and beyond. It supports understanding of the basic behavior of materials and how to relate observed physical properties to microscopic understanding. The book also provides researchers with a handy collation of data relating to diffusion in ceramics and supports a fundamental understanding of atomic movements.

Book excerpt: Although this volume is ostensibly devoted to diffusion per se, it also covers ionic conduction because this phenomenon, in the often complex and charge-sensitive structures of many ceramics, usually gives important clues as to the routes taken by all migrating species. The definition of what constitutes a ceramic is also liberally interpreted here so as to include substances which are not normally used as such in the industrial sense. One obvious anomaly is the class of so-called room-temperature superconductors which, perversely, are expected to be used at the opposite end of the temperature scale to traditional ceramic applications. The coverage of research on oxides, carbides and nitrides herein is believed to be as complete as possible, while other possible candidates for inclusion are not necessarily to be found in the 'miscellaneous' section. Silicides, in particular, are notable by their absence.

Book excerpt: This is the second issue, following DDF164, to cover recent progress in this field. The contents are contiguous with those of DDF164, and extend to late November or December 1999 (depending upon journal publication dates). As usual, priority in abstracting has been given to the most accessible work and, in particular, to those papers which furnish original data or report important new techniques, phenomena or anomalies, although there is also extensive coverage of more qualitative features of diffusion and defect phenomena, and of the predictions of computer models. The issue of course also includes original papers on the topic at hand covering, in this case, the synthesis and properties of zirconia-based nanocrystalline powders and ceramics (R.E. Juárez, D.G. Lamas, G.E. Lascalea and N.E. Walsöe de Reca), the optical properties of hydrogenated amorphous silicon carbide films (W.K. Choi), the structures and optical properties of defects as related to photo-induced refractive index changes in Ge-doped silica glass (M. Fujimaki and Y. Ohki) and the effects of Li intercalation in zirconia films (A.K. Jonsson, M. Strømme Mattsson, G.A. Niklasson). As well as these ceramic-specific papers, the present issue contains timely papers on other materials, such as an analysis of Diffusion Mechanisms in Ni3Al, Ni3Ge and Ni3Ga (I.V. Belova and G.E. Murch) and molecular dynamics simulations of self-diffusion in GaAs (P. Murugan and K. Ramachandran). Altogether, this again makes the present work the most up-to-date and convenient source of information on current trends in the field of Defects and Diffusion. Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Surfaces and Interfaces of Ceramic Materials, held on the Oleron island, France, in September 1988. This Institute was organized in nine months after receiving the agreement of the NATO Scientific Affairs Division. Despite this very short time, most of the lecturers contacted have accepted our invitation to prepare a specific talk. The meeting was held at "La Vieille Perrotine" on the Oleron island. This holiday village of the French CNRS is located near the Ocean in a natural area which contributed to create a very pleasant atmosphere favourable to develop interaction between the 91 participants in this Institute. First of all, the Institute was aimed at diffusing the foremost results on the characterization of and the role played by surfaces, grain boundaries and interfaces in preparation and overall properties of ceramic materials, mainly of oxide ceramics. Through its interdisciplinary character, the Institute was also aimed at developing interaction between scientists and engineers interested in basic and practical aspects of processing and use of ceramics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Introduction to Ceramic Science covers the principles of ceramic science, the physicochemical system, and atomic mechanisms of ceramics. This book is organized into eight chapters and begins with a study of atoms and the way in which they bond together to form crystalline solids. This topic is followed by a geometrical description of the structures of some crystals of particular importance in ceramics and some of the features of the elementary classical theory of ionic crystals. The following chapter presents the principles of the thermodynamic and phase diagram approaches to study phase equilibrium in ceramics. A chapter is devoted to the microstructure and porosity of ceramics. The discussion then shifts to several atomic movements in dense ceramics, such as diffusion, nucleation, and grain growth. The concluding chapters examine the mechanical properties and densification processes in ceramics. This book is of great value to ceramists, scientists, researchers, and undergraduate students who are interested in improving ceramic materials for particular applications.

Book excerpt: This open access book brings out the state of the art on how informatics-based tools are used and expected to be used in nanomaterials research. There has been great progress in the area in which “big-data” generated by experiments or computations are fully utilized to accelerate discovery of new materials, key factors, and design rules. Data-intensive approaches play indispensable roles in advanced materials characterization. "Materials informatics" is the central paradigm in the new trend. "Nanoinformatics" is its essential subset, which focuses on nanostructures of materials such as surfaces, interfaces, dopants, and point defects, playing a critical role in determining materials properties. There have been significant advances in experimental and computational techniques to characterize individual atoms in nanostructures and to gain quantitative information. The collaboration of researchers in materials science and information science is growing actively and is creating a new trend in materials science and engineering.
