Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2012 in the subject Economics - Micro-economics, grade: B, The University of Chicago, language: English, abstract: About 99% of all the enterprises in the world are small or medium enterprises characterized of start up firms at the infant stage or well established SMEs. SMEs are essential in all economies especially to the developing countries characterized by major unemployment and income distribution challenges. In Kenya, SMEs are essential to the economy for which they are considered the main drivers. There are about 7.5 million SMEs in Kenya providing employment and income generating opportunities to low income sectors of the economy. The official policy framework of SMEs in Kenya is contained in the Sessional Paper No 2 of 2005: Development of Micro and Small Enterprises for Wealth and Employment Creation for Poverty Reduction. The policy forms the basis for enacting the SME Act which institutionalizes SME policy in Kenya (Syekei & Opijah, 2012). The contribution of the SMEs sector to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Kenya increased from 13.8 percent in 1993 to about 40 percent by 2008. The sector further provides approximately 80% of the total employment and contributes about 92% of the new jobs created within the economy. The sector serves as the bedrock for industrializing the country in the future (Capital Markets Authority, 2010). In the developing countries such as Kenya, with large informal or micro enterprise sectors, SMEs constitute the middle of the size range, hence their strategic importance. SMEs are considerably more complicated in terms of the organizational structure as opposed to microenterprises but less complicated as opposed to large corporations with layers of management and high division of labor among other characteristics. In terms of technology SMEs are intermediate between high labor intensive technologies and high capital intensive technologies providing SMEs with a special role in generation of adequate or decent employment (Palma, 2005). Due to these characteristics various constraints lower SMEs resilience to risk and prevent them from growing and attaining economies of scale. The challenges faced by SMEs in Kenya are not limited to the areas of financing investments and working capital but also include human resource development, market access and access to modern technology and information. Consequently, there are various factors that have supported SMEs growth since the 1990s (Capital Markets Authority, 2010).

Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2014 in the subject Leadership and Human Resources - Generation Y, Generation Z, Royal University of Bhutan (Royal Institute of Management, Thimphu), course: Post Graduate Diploma in Public Administration (PGDPA), language: English, abstract: The purpose of the study is to examine the role of MSMEs in solving unemployment problem and to find the unemployment trend. The unemployment problem is rising every year and especially youth unemployment is increasing at alarming rate. The study covers Thimphu area whereby a total of 351 samples were determined for the purpose of the study however the response rate was 82.05% with 288 responds qualifying for the analysis. Descriptive analysis was used and the findings reveal that most of the business owned by youth entrepreneurs employed more people though their initial investments were very low. The study also shows that most of the present business owners has plan of expanding their business in future which will create more jobs. From the studies, it shows that unemployment rate in Bhutan fluctuates and is mainly because of change in the supply and demand in the job markets. It also shows that despite high unemployment rate in the country, preferences for job among the youth remain same. They prefer to join civil servants followed by corporations, NGOs and self-employment or entrepreneurship as the last option. From this preferences of job and trend of high unemployment rate in the country, it can conclude that there is no refugee in the country nor can say that there is entrepreneurial effect as the entrepreneurship culture in the country is in the verge of developing, therefore entrepreneurial effect can only be tested after some years when the entrepreneurship culture in the country is fully developed.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: -pass, , course: Enterprenuership, language: English, abstract: The importance of Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) in contributing to job creation and output growth is widely accepted in both developed and developing countries, of particular interest is the process of expansion from micro to small that growth oriented make their most tangible contribution to economic growth and job creation. .Women-Owned micro enterprises are a powerful force for growth and development thus making important contributions to the economy as workers and as entrepreneurs to the welfare of their families. The researcher investigated why Women-owned enterprises remain the same way year in year out without, an increase in number of employees or any other sign to indicate graduation from one level to another. The researcher wanted to find out why enterprises owned by women operate under significant constraints which greatly inhibit realization of their full potential. Many developing countries have attempted to put in place various intervention programmes to address factors that affect the graduation of women owned micro-enterprises; unfortunately many of them are policies yet to be implemented. Through the assistance from Nyeri municipal-council, the researcher acquired the target population of Micro-Enterprises within Nyeri town which was the survey under study. The research design that the researcher used was the descriptive survey research design. Variables, for instance financial accessibility was looked at among others and their influence on graduation of micro-enterprises. The instruments that the researcher used was the Questionnaire and Interviews. The researcher came up with comprehensive results that can be useful to women in micro-enterprises and the Government at large. Pre-testing procedure was carried out to ensure the validity and reliability of the data to be collected. A descriptive statistic procedure was used to carry out the data analysis. Bar-charts, tables and pie-charts are used for data presentation. Some of the major findings in this research include the fact that many women operating micro-enterprises started their enterprises with personal savings as they could not access loans from formal institutions due to lack of collateral- Due to their low level of education, majority of them exhibited challenges in record keeping as well as marketing which are very essential for graduation of an enterprise from micro to small.

What makes the book unique is Gray's sub-sector approach, which focuses on the particular industries of tailoring, woodwork and metalwork. Gray investigates the development of these sub-sectors by taking a strategic management approach. Such an approach allows the author to assess enterprise competitiveness and profitability within industries. Readers will find that the information in this book serves as a well-needed supplement to the literature on the World Bank's July 1995 decision to focus more on micro-enterprise development. The book will appeal to many different audiences including development agencies concerned with the economic development community and the international academic community. Business and social science students who are interested in how work is organized in the family and the effects of modernization on traditional society will also benefit from reading this book.

Considerable learning is going on amongst the highly diverse VSME population and the challenge for the state lies in how to support what is already going on: how to spread it and how to avoid over-interference in enterprises whose success has typically been irrespective of, or in spite of external interventions. In addition to producing an HRD Review and an electronically accessible cross-sectoral warehouse, the Research Programme undertakes user-driven research in education and training, focusing on further and higher education and science, technology and education, with a strong emphasis on learning pathways - especially the transition between different levels of education and training, and between education and work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Kiswahili, the term "jua kali" literally means "hot sun." Once, the term referred to enterprises where business was carried out without adequate shelter or workspace. Today, "jua kali" means Kenya's small-scale, informal work sector, encompassing micro- and small enterprises (MSEs) as well as small and medium enterprises (SMEs). This thesis uses both qualitative and quantitative methods of research to look at job creation in the jua kali sector, highlighting problems that hinder this sector from creating more employment. Lack of access to sufficient capital impairs growth. Without funds, jua kali artisans are unable to modernise their production, and they cannot afford the modern premises their customers expect. Sometimes they face eviction from the Nairobi City Council. Jua kali artisans also lack innovation in their production methods; they cannot afford experts to train them in design, and the cost of raw materials keeps rising. They also do not enjoy the media promotion and advertisement that are routinely given to goods imported into Kenya, and manufactured by large Kenyan factories. Their products face stiff competition from so-called "dumped goods" from outside Kenya. The government of Kenya is looking into ways of boosting the private sector that includes jua kali, which may help jua kali artisans tackle these persistent problems.
