Book excerpt: This study addresses the academic challenges graduate Chinese students face when they move from Eastern to Western university environments and English becomes the language of instruction. To address these issues, this study aims to understand the Chinese students' academic background in China, the methods through which they learned English, and their beliefs, expectations, and misconceptions in relation to academic success, courses, professors, assessments, and grades when they come to study in a medium-sized U.S. university. Data were collected through interviews with four Chinese graduate students who have been in the U.S. for nine months or longer. Each participant was interviewed during three individual sessions. Then, the interviews were transcribed and analyzed. The results indicated that the Chinese educational system favors conservative attitudes toward knowledge based on reproductive models of thinking, which align with the purpose of Chinese education. However, these attitudes may not transfer to Western academic environments and may clash with the purpose of Western education, which favors experimentation and innovation. In addition, the participants' preparedness for English immersion can be misleading for both Chinese students and U.S. faculty. Lastly, the participants believed that in order to succeed at the university, they had to improve their communicative strategies and change their attitudes to learning. These findings may be useful for identifying and understanding Chinese students' attitudes and specific academic needs within the different cultures and sub-cultures at the university. They may also assist U.S. instructors in developing curricula, assessments, and classroom practices that take Chinese students' needs into account.

Book excerpt: This dissertation examines how the transmission of language ideologies on a US campus shapes Chinese international students' experiences regarding English academic writing. The study is motivated by past research that demonstrates the challenges of mastering English academic writing, particularly for people who did not speak English early in life. Given that socially shared conceptions of what constitutes "good" academic writing are institutional and societal, I apply the theoretical framework of language ideologies, which stresses that language-related attitudes mediate social action, reify preexisting social hierarchies, and obtain at different levels of social organization. Operationalizing language ideologies into three main strands-aggressive monolingualism, progressive multilingualism, and economic pragmatism-I track individuals' language-ideological alignments in addition to larger institutional language-ideological alignments; I apply a novel methodology combining social-network mapping with writing-focused ethnographic interviews. Based on interviews with 14 Chinese international students and 17 campus community members with whom they discussed English academic writing, I show, first, that all of these individuals experienced the pull of multiple competing and conflicting language ideologies, and they could shift their language-ideological alignments dynamically in different contexts, in line with what past language-ideological scholarship has argued (e.g. Irvine & Gal, 2000; Kroskrity, 2007). Building on language-ideological theory, I demonstrate that language ideologies are cumulative: when multiple language ideologies (e.g. valuing so-called "nativelike" English first as an end in itself [aggressive monolingualism] and second as a means to achieving career success [economic pragmatism]) overlap, they become more powerful. I demonstrate that explicit language-evaluative talk among instructors, especially in officially sanctioned contexts like staff meetings, is a particularly potent influencer of people's language ideologies. Further, I identify that language-ideological silence-when individuals, especially instructors, leave their language-evaluative criteria unspoken-leaves the door open for aggressively monolingual language ideologies to take root as the tacit norm of US universities. Based on these findings, I argue for further language-ideological research to apply a social-network-focused approach within a wider range of communities, developing a clearer picture of how language ideologies shape multilingual people's experiences with English academic writing. Additionally, I offer recommendations for stakeholders in educational contexts, especially advocating for all university stakeholders who interact with multilingual students to develop explicit and justified language-evaluative criteria to share with their students. Overall, this dissertation argues for a deeper awareness of how university stakeholders'-especially instructors'-attitudes toward multilingual people's Englishes can shape their experiences in college.

Book excerpt: Students from Mainland China are the largest international group in both United States and Canada, and their numbers have grown substantially. The influx of Chinese students has contributed to American and Canadian higher education institutions academically, financially, and culturally. However, due to rapid changes of social, cultural and political contexts in both home and host countries, new patterns of student mobility arise. Especially in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, higher education institutions in US and Canada need to understand international students' needs and prepare better to attract and serve international students. My dissertation employed interviews to explore in-depth perspectives from students within the tradition of qualitative research. I conducted in-depth and semi-structured interviews with 55 Chinese undergraduate students, 21 of them at Cheer University in the US and 34 of them at Tree University in Canada. My study shows that Chinese students' college choices were mainly influenced by push factors - by Gaokao and by the type of secondary education that developed in China under Gaokao. In addition, studying abroad was not only about knowledge or degree. It was also about with experiences, such as broadened views and skills. In this sense, middle-class families invested not only in knowledge and degrees, but also in the experiences of living abroad. Parents and their children strongly believed that the entire process is to their advantage in the future when they are compared to people who did not study abroad. Recommendations are made for both universities and future young Chinese people who want to study abroad.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the following two studies is to identify the personal and contextual factors and the ways in which 1.5 and second generation Chinese American undergraduate at two universities believe these factors influence their academic and career decision making. While research on career development has identified important social-contextual factors, the roles of hindering and supportive environmental conditions and the ways in which they impact students' academic and career interests and field of study choice have not been as well understood (Lent, Brown, & Hackett, 2002). This study utilizes qualitative methods to examine how 58 Chinese American college students at two universities make meaning of the personal and environmental factors that influence their academic and career development. In the first study, I examine perceptions of how individual factors such as sense of academic identity, self-efficacy beliefs, and personal interest and aptitude influence the development of academic and career interests. Contextual factors such as parental involvement, exposure to extracurricular activities, and university context are considered to be just as influential, if not more. In the second study, the role of parents in guiding their young adult children's career development are dissected further by examining the role of gender in male and female students' perceptions of parental involvement, with mother's and father's involvement examined separately. Findings indicate perceptions of same-sex parents having more direct influence and the perceptions of the nature and degree of influence differing by participants' gender.
