But at the outset it has the power to lead us toward right or wrong conclusions in diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment, according as we have or have not learned the art of following it up. This book is an attempt to study medicine from the point of view of the presenting symptom. I hope to show how the complaints of the patient - fragmentary expressions of the underlying disease - should be used as leads, and how their lead can be followed to the actual seat of the disease.
