The text is organized by body system, and each set of mnemonics is accompanied by notes for fine tuning the diagnostic process. The mnemonics included range in length from short to very long depending on the clinical entity. Sometimes more than one has been added for brevity or organizational reasons. Mnemonics presented provide simple frameworks on which to construct differential diagnoses. Mnemonics included are concise, pertinent words or phrases constructed to reflect the pathogenesis of the problem. Others are simple words that help in remembering a list of possibilities. An explanatory section is included with each mnemonic to review pathogenesis or provide helpful information. Enhances the readers thoroughness in making evaluations so that diagnoses are not missed. The sheer volume of facts to learn and memorize in the study of Medicine can be daunting. Double boarded in both Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases, I have been teaching clinical adult medicine to students for over 30 years (Medical, Physician Assistant, and Nursing) and it is not unusual for us to deal with 25 different diagnoses while on daily hospital rounds. I teach the students the importance of having a "differential diagnosis" of a medical problem at their fingertips. This book contains over 200 "easy to recall" mnemonics and other pearls that will aid the student in grasping important lists of differential diagnoses concerning common medical problems. I have chosen the most common internal medicine problems in 13 main categories. Mnemonics are extremely useful in learning the details of medicine, especially when there are "lists of key causes" to remember. These lists are often on written and clinical exams and medical board tests (such as National Boards and PANCE), so it is incumbent on the student to know them well. After a while, the use of mnemonics will become easy. Each mnemonic has an associated picture which will help you to visually engrain it in your mind. A point is included with the mnemonic for 'key point' emphasis. I have included my "Triples, Tetrads, and Pentads" and other charts to help you review the numerous 'pearls of medicine'.

This book helps solve the problem of mountains of information and rote memorizing. One of the ways of remembering the large volume of medical facts is through knowing mnemonics. Book excerpt: This book is derived from notes taken during a dermatology residency and it represents a comprehensive yet condensed approach to a dermatology curriculum, listing every entity with only the most important and testable facts and mnemonics. There is an intimidating large amount of material for young dermatologists and other doctors with an interest in dermatology to learn, and this guide puts it all into a concise and manageable context. Further, introductions to the dermatology physical exam and dermatopathology, as well short guides describing the basics of medications, basic science, cosmetics, and surgery are included. The goal of this guide is not primarily to help with visual identification of diagnoses, but rather to help young dermatologists learn to create differential diagnoses and learn all the important facts for myriad diseases. Given its unique approach, this guide will serve new residents well in quickly adapting to a new field, and also, it will serve senior residents as quick review of all topics in preparation for in service and board examinations. In general, there are very few dermatology board review books of any kind and therefore this book will immediately have a market among dermatology students, residents, rotators, and faculty.

Book excerpt: Detection and characterization of bone tumors with imaging remains a big challenge for every radiologist notwithstanding the impressive progress achieved by the introduction of several new imaging modalities. Moreover, new concepts in surgical and oncological treatment of these lesions require from the radiologist appropriate and focused answers to the specifc questions asked by the referring physicians in order to choose the best therapeutic approach for the in- vidual patient. Tis comprehensive textbook describes in detail the possibilities and limits of all moda- ties, including MRI, CT, nuclear medicine and interventional radiological procedures, employed for the modern imaging of tumoral and tumor-like lesions of bone. Teir role in the diagnosis, surgical staging, biopsy and assessment of response to therapy is discussed in detail, covering all tumor subtypes as well as their specifc anatomical location.Well selected and technically imp- cable illustrations strongly enhance the didactic value of this work. I am very much indebted and grateful to the three editors: A. Mark Davies, Murali Sundaram and Steven L. J. James, world authorities in musculoskeletal radiology, for their superb scientifc achievement in preparing and editing this wonderful volume as well as for their individual ch- ters. I would also like to thank the large international group of collaborating authors, who are also widely acknowledged for their specifc expertise in the area of bone tumors, for their outstanding contributions.
