Past research reveals that this difference may be due to cultural values, such as those relating to individualism and collectivism, awareness of social norms, blame internalization, risk perception, and mental health stigma and treatment. Hypothesizing that cultural beliefs may make an individual prone to directing lethal violence either inwardly or outwardly, this study examined the responses of ten Japanese and ten American college students to interview questions regarding their holistic perceptions on the topics of violence, suicide, and social norms in their respective cultures. Findings indicate that relevant cultural and social themes, such as the awareness of the perception of self by others, mental health stigma, and suicide as a product of social systems, may relate to the differing rates of lethal violence in the two countries."--Abstract

Papers by one or two Japan-based scholar(s) are paired with a U.S.-based scholar, reflecting the book’s intention to promote dialogue and mutuality across national formations.
