Just as marital satisfaction is vital to a couple's well-being, marital dissatisfaction can be distressing to a couple. Instances of research on relevant topics have been found in abundance in the west. However, this study is an attempt to expand the existing literature to the east and provide dovetail conclusions about the levels of marital satisfaction among couples in Pakistan. This study developed a validated screening scale with local norms called "The Marital Satisfaction Scale (MSS)" that would provide appropriate guidelines to the mental health care professionals and marriage counselors for the treatment of dissatisfied married couples. This study explored twelve subscales i.e. In-laws relationship, Communication, Husband's Financial Status, Compromise, Understanding, Spouse Support, Self-Perception, Dual Earning, Mutual Understanding, Education of Partner, Sexual Satisfaction, & Gender Difference, which relates to overall marital satisfaction.

Sexton (1992) outlined, "Marriage as a legal term describing bound relationship regarding people so as to meet three differing kinds of needs: emotional, sexual and psychological". Glenn and Weaver (1979) outlined, "Marriage is found to be one in all the strongest correlates of happiness and well being". Argyle and Furnham (1983) outlined, "Marriage is that the greatest supply of social support for many individuals quite friends or together with emotional and married support and companionship". 18 Kennedy, Glares, and Glaser et al. (1990) defined for those who are married, the spouse is involved in and instrumental in a wide range of other satisfaction including sex and leisure. Being in love is the greatest source of positive emotion. Marriage is a very important from health point of view, as it results in better health behavior. Married people drink and smoke less have a better diet and do what the doctor orders. Marital satisfaction Marital satisfaction is linked to the happiness of the partners which is shared with, resolution of conflict and emotional support. Further, one can say that, it is one of the most important features which lead to the overall satisfaction in marital life of the person (Fowers & Olson, 1993, Argyle & Furnham, 1983). It reflects the suitable advantages and outlay of benefits in marriage to a particular person. Similarly, if one perceives greater benefits of marriage, one can achieve greater and more satisfying with in marital life and with the partner (Stone & Shackelford, 2007). The marital relationship is one of the most significant and unique relation among all human relationships. It is not only a mere convention, but also an implicit condition in all human society. The relationship between husband and wife is a very specific context and involves a complex process of adjustment. In the past people used to marry for all the social status marriage guaranteed to them but things have changed today. It has become more of a personal accomplishment and a stage in self growth and development (Bulcraft, Bulcraft, Bradley, & Simpson, 2000). However, it still provides legal and social approval for having children in third world countries. It won't be wrong to state that marriage changes the couples' status permanently. They become one family unit that share all the social, legal, financial and emotional responsibilities towards each other and bring in the next generation. It is just not only a social obligation one enters due to societal expectations but also, it is equally vital for the personal satisfaction and development of an individual. It is universally acknowledged that all social institutions have an impact on the well-being of an individual, interestingly, not all have the equal degree.
